DOST Secretary Mario Montejo

Launches Smarter Philippines

Program in Davao City

Smarter Philippines is the DOST’s technology-based

inclusive development program.

It has 6 components, which

synergize to yield:

• improved competitiveness,

• increased productivity, and

• a better quality of life.

Page 3: The Philippine Smarter Cities Initiative: Building Smarter Cities Towards a Smarter Philippines

“Smarter Cities plus Smarter Countryside equals a progressive Smarter Philippines. It is a technology-based development model that recognizes secondary cities as drivers of growth not only within its area, but also in its surrounding countryside. Kung mangyari ipo ito sa lahat ng siyudad ng Pilipinas, this could be a new approach for inclusive and sustainable growth, for poverty alleviation.” - Sec. Mario G. Montejo

A Smarter City has these key elements

• It constantly assesses how it performs in key areas:

governance, the economy, the environment, citizen mobility,

human resource development, and quality of life;

• It denotes an instrumented, interconnected, and intelligent

city.

• It strives to make itself “smarter”: more efficient, more

innovative, more sustainable, more participative and

equitable, and more livable: via strategic use of the

convergent technologies enabled by ICT.

Smarter Philippines, Feb. 20, 2013

The NOAH-Wise Project: Weather Information Integration for System Enhancement

Improved weather forecasting will improve flood prediction

EXPECTED OUTCOMES:

• Improved weather forecasting

• NOAH’s weather forecast extended from 6

hours to 7 days

• Larger area coverage to monitor weather

disturbances forming out at sea

• Faster computing time will result in hourly

7-day forecasts

• More weather parameters will be produced

for public information

• Improved flood prediction

The DOST-DOH Dep Ed OL Trap Program: Dengue prevention through biological control. DOST-produced OL (ovicidal-larvicidal) traps are placed in different areas of participating schools and serviced every 6 days by volunteers. The OL Traps contain a larvicidal solution which emits an odor that attract Aedes mosquitos to lay their eggs in them. The solution then kills the eggs and larvae.

National online dengue early warning system. The red balloons indicate schools with OL Trap indices of >40%. Local authorities in these areas are alerted to undertake an all-out anti-dengue campaign. Coming soon!

Knowledge Management and Exchange System

Objective

Strengthen the capacity of cities to effectively manage inclusive urban

development through the implementation of a knowledge management

and exchange system among city managers and stakeholders

Addresses these challenges

1. Limited Participation and Access to Capacity Development

Programs

2. Inadequate management of knowledge resources

3. Lack of sustainable program for peer to peer knowledge exchange

among city managers
