Sometimes little children have certain Sometimes little children have certain things that make them afraid. When things that make them afraid. When

mom tucks them in their room at night, mom tucks them in their room at night, maybe they’re sure that there are maybe they’re sure that there are

monsters on the back side of the bed. monsters on the back side of the bed. Perhaps their room was configured, so Perhaps their room was configured, so

their bed was about a foot from the their bed was about a foot from the wall on the left side and there was a wall on the left side and there was a

window there. window there.

It would be a perfect set up for a It would be a perfect set up for a monster to climb into that window and monster to climb into that window and

hide in that small space behind the hide in that small space behind the bed. Then, when the lights went out bed. Then, when the lights went out

that monster had the perfect chance to that monster had the perfect chance to claim them as their victim. claim them as their victim.

They probably slept so close to the right They probably slept so close to the right side of the bed that one arm hung over side of the bed that one arm hung over the side. To this day, their right arm is the side. To this day, their right arm is several inches longer than their left. If several inches longer than their left. If they heard a bump, zoom, they were they heard a bump, zoom, they were

out of the bed and into mom and dad’s out of the bed and into mom and dad’s room.room.

They might have a recurring dream of They might have a recurring dream of someone chasing them. They would someone chasing them. They would

be running but in slow motion. be running but in slow motion. Something or someone was right Something or someone was right

behind them and it was obvious that behind them and it was obvious that they were going to catch them. they were going to catch them.

They were in slow motion, they were They were in slow motion, they were flying. The child would wake up flying. The child would wake up

breathing heavy, heart racing, scared breathing heavy, heart racing, scared to death! to death!

But over the course of time, they grew But over the course of time, they grew out of those fears. out of those fears.

By their teen years they aren’t afraid of By their teen years they aren’t afraid of some monster. They were more afraid some monster. They were more afraid

of what their peers thought of them. of what their peers thought of them. They were afraid of not being They were afraid of not being

accepted. The more you think about it, accepted. The more you think about it, the more you realize that throughout the more you realize that throughout

life, the things you fear shifts.life, the things you fear shifts.

While your nightmares as a child are While your nightmares as a child are about monsters and ghouls, as a about monsters and ghouls, as a

person in mid-40s it might be that you person in mid-40s it might be that you will have lived your whole life and will have lived your whole life and

never accomplish what you had hoped never accomplish what you had hoped as an idealistic twenty-something. as an idealistic twenty-something.

In your 70s you are thinking about who In your 70s you are thinking about who will take care of you when you can’t will take care of you when you can’t take care of yourself. What is it that take care of yourself. What is it that you are afraid of in the stage of your you are afraid of in the stage of your

life you are in right now? life you are in right now?

Honestly, there is a whole lot of fear Honestly, there is a whole lot of fear beneath what Paul writes in beneath what Paul writes in Romans 8Romans 8. . Now understand what I mean by that. Now understand what I mean by that.

Paul is addressing the fears of his Paul is addressing the fears of his Christian readers. He is saying, Christian readers. He is saying,

"There is good news "There is good news for those who are Christians!"for those who are Christians!"

He tells us we don’t have to be afraid of He tells us we don’t have to be afraid of God’s wrath, because God’s wrath, because "there is "there is

therefore now no condemnation for therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus."those who are in Christ Jesus." He has He has

comforted us by telling us about the comforted us by telling us about the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit. abiding presence of the Holy Spirit.

You don’t have to be afraid of wandering You don’t have to be afraid of wandering aimlessly through life, you have a aimlessly through life, you have a

friend and guide. You don’t have to friend and guide. You don’t have to live hopelessly because in Christ you live hopelessly because in Christ you

always have hope. And this morning in always have hope. And this morning in verses verses 26-3026-30 he wants us to recognize he wants us to recognize that if we are in Christ, we are plugged that if we are in Christ, we are plugged

into God’s purpose.into God’s purpose.

Paul challenges us to not be cowards, Paul challenges us to not be cowards, but to live life with boldness, confident but to live life with boldness, confident

that God has a destiny for us, and that God has a destiny for us, and assured that He is working to direct us assured that He is working to direct us

toward His ultimate purpose for our toward His ultimate purpose for our life. life.

Now I realize that this passage is deep Now I realize that this passage is deep water theologically. There are a lot of water theologically. There are a lot of pretty heavy words and concepts in pretty heavy words and concepts in

these verses. these verses.

And honestly it would be easy to get And honestly it would be easy to get pulled under by the weight of the many pulled under by the weight of the many unanswered theological questions. But unanswered theological questions. But if that happens, we’ve missed Paul’s if that happens, we’ve missed Paul’s point. This passage was written to point. This passage was written to

serve as a lifejacket, serve as a lifejacket,

a few words of assurance to carry us a few words of assurance to carry us through the times when the swirling through the times when the swirling torrents of life threaten to drag us torrents of life threaten to drag us

down. Out of these verses this down. Out of these verses this morning we need to notice morning we need to notice 44 reasons reasons

that Paul tells us not to be afraid. that Paul tells us not to be afraid.

You Are Not You Are Not On Your Own.On Your Own.

Honestly, when I look back at theHonestly, when I look back at theprayers I have lifted up in my past,prayers I have lifted up in my past,

often I see they were pretty lame. When often I see they were pretty lame. When I look back at my prayers 5,10, 15 I look back at my prayers 5,10, 15

years ago, they scare me. years ago, they scare me.

I asked for things that honestly it would I asked for things that honestly it would have been bad if I had gotten them. have been bad if I had gotten them. They seemed important to me at the They seemed important to me at the time. I had relatively pure motives in time. I had relatively pure motives in asking for them. But because I am asking for them. But because I am

human, limited in my capacity to know human, limited in my capacity to know the future, or even much about the the future, or even much about the present, my prayers were faulty. I present, my prayers were faulty. I

thank God He hasn’t always given me thank God He hasn’t always given me what I wanted. what I wanted.

This brings to mind an old This brings to mind an old Garth BrooksGarth Brooks song. It tells the story of a man and his song. It tells the story of a man and his

wife running into his old high school wife running into his old high school flame. When this happens he sees flame. When this happens he sees what she is today and realizes how what she is today and realizes how

blessed he is God didn’t answer yes to blessed he is God didn’t answer yes to his prayers that God would make her his prayers that God would make her

his. The chorus says this: his. The chorus says this:

Sometimes I thank God Sometimes I thank God for unanswered prayers for unanswered prayers

Remember when you're talkin' Remember when you're talkin' to the man upstairs to the man upstairs

That just because he may not That just because he may not answer doesn't mean he don't answer doesn't mean he don't

are are unanswered prayersunanswered prayers

Of course we know the prayers don’t go Of course we know the prayers don’t go unanswered. The answer could have unanswered. The answer could have

been been NoNo, or , or Not Now!Not Now!But Paul says that we don’t have to be But Paul says that we don’t have to be

afraid to pray. We don’t have to fear afraid to pray. We don’t have to fear that God is going to mess up and give that God is going to mess up and give

us something we shouldn’t have. us something we shouldn’t have.

The Holy Spirit, God Himself who takes The Holy Spirit, God Himself who takes up residence in our life, is interceding up residence in our life, is interceding

on our behalf before the throne of on our behalf before the throne of God. Our prayers are not subject to God. Our prayers are not subject to

our own limitations.our own limitations.

In Chicago there is a father/son athletic In Chicago there is a father/son athletic team who regularly compete in the team who regularly compete in the Iron Man Triathlon. It is a grueling Iron Man Triathlon. It is a grueling

event involving swimming 2.4 miles on event involving swimming 2.4 miles on open sea, biking 112 miles, and then open sea, biking 112 miles, and then running a 26.2 mile marathon. It takes running a 26.2 mile marathon. It takes incredible conditioning just to compete incredible conditioning just to compete

in this event. in this event.

And Rick Hoyt has finished the And Rick Hoyt has finished the competition several times even though competition several times even though he is totally, physically disabled. That’s he is totally, physically disabled. That’s right, he can’t runright, he can’t run,, he can’t swim, and he can’t swim, and he could never think about pedaling a he could never think about pedaling a

bike. bike.

But he finishes the course because his But he finishes the course because his father, Dick Hoyt carries him through father, Dick Hoyt carries him through the course. Dick swims the 2.4 miles the course. Dick swims the 2.4 miles

pulling a boat. He bikes 112 miles pulling a boat. He bikes 112 miles carrying his child. He runs the 26.2 carrying his child. He runs the 26.2 miles pulling a specially made cart. miles pulling a specially made cart.

You know, on our own we are all a You know, on our own we are all a whole lot like Rick Hoyt. There’s no whole lot like Rick Hoyt. There’s no way we could make it through the way we could make it through the

grueling rigors of life anywhere near grueling rigors of life anywhere near where we should be on our own. But where we should be on our own. But Paul says you don’t have to be afraid Paul says you don’t have to be afraid

of that. You are not alone. of that. You are not alone.

The Holy Spirit is regularly lifting your The Holy Spirit is regularly lifting your prayers before the Father, and prayers before the Father, and

interceding on your behalf so that your interceding on your behalf so that your prayers remain in accordance with prayers remain in accordance with

God’s Will.God’s Will.

You Are Loved Unconditionally You Are Loved Unconditionally By The One Who Is With YouBy The One Who Is With You

The idea that you are not alone is not The idea that you are not alone is not necessarily a comforting thought. necessarily a comforting thought.

Laying in my bedroom as a little boy, Laying in my bedroom as a little boy, the thought that I wasn’t alone scared the thought that I wasn’t alone scared

me to death. me to death.

But really what was scaring me was that But really what was scaring me was that I was afraid that those monsters didn’t I was afraid that those monsters didn’t have my best interest in mind. They have my best interest in mind. They wanted to eat me! So when my fear wanted to eat me! So when my fear

overtook me, I sought the companion overtook me, I sought the companion of someone who I knew had my best of someone who I knew had my best

interest at heart. I ran to mom and interest at heart. I ran to mom and dad.dad.

Now the fact of the matter is, there are a Now the fact of the matter is, there are a whole lot of people who are not so whole lot of people who are not so sure they are comforted by the fact sure they are comforted by the fact that God is always with themthat God is always with them.. It is It is

typical at some point in life to wonder if typical at some point in life to wonder if God always has our best interest at God always has our best interest at

heart. heart.

That is often the way we think when we That is often the way we think when we choose to disobey God. We think that choose to disobey God. We think that

God is trying to hold out on us. Or God is trying to hold out on us. Or when we go through hardship we when we go through hardship we

wonder if He hasn’t forgotten about us. wonder if He hasn’t forgotten about us. Surely if God was with us, He wouldn’t Surely if God was with us, He wouldn’t

let us go through such difficulty and let us go through such difficulty and pain!pain!

From Paul’s perspective, that’s the From Paul’s perspective, that’s the wrong way to look at it. By faith, Paul wrong way to look at it. By faith, Paul says "we know" that God always has says "we know" that God always has our best interest at heart, and He is our best interest at heart, and He is

always working to bring about good in always working to bring about good in our lives. our lives.

who love God, who are called who love God, who are called according to his purpose,according to his purpose,

That verse has been an anchor for That verse has been an anchor for generations of Christians who have generations of Christians who have

struggled through hardship and trials. struggled through hardship and trials.

It doesn’t say that everything that It doesn’t say that everything that happens is good. But it does say that happens is good. But it does say that no matter what does happen, good, no matter what does happen, good, bad or indifferent, God can and will bad or indifferent, God can and will use it for our good, if we allow Him. use it for our good, if we allow Him.

Notice the truth of this promise. Notice the truth of this promise.

Not all things work out for the good of all Not all things work out for the good of all people. But for those who love God, people. But for those who love God,

and have been called according to His and have been called according to His purpose, even the worst of times can purpose, even the worst of times can

bring good in their life. I wish we could bring good in their life. I wish we could go around the room this morning and go around the room this morning and have people share how they’ve seen have people share how they’ve seen

this work in their own life.this work in their own life.

We could find Christian people whose We could find Christian people whose pain produced perseverance. We pain produced perseverance. We

could find those who endured hardship could find those who endured hardship and came to have a depth to their faith and came to have a depth to their faith

that they would never have known if that they would never have known if life had been smooth sailing. There life had been smooth sailing. There

are in this room, tremendous are in this room, tremendous testimonies for the truth of this verse. testimonies for the truth of this verse.

What it all boils down to is this: God What it all boils down to is this: God loves you too much to let you suffer loves you too much to let you suffer without purpose. So the God who is without purpose. So the God who is

completely sovereign over everything completely sovereign over everything takes the difficulties of this life and takes the difficulties of this life and

works them for good in our lives. That works them for good in our lives. That unconditional love of God carries us to unconditional love of God carries us to

the next verse. the next verse.

The One Who Is With You Has A The One Who Is With You Has A Plan For YouPlan For You

Romans 8:29Romans 8:29 NET NET because those whom because those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be he foreknew he also predestined to be

conformed to the image of his Son, conformed to the image of his Son, that his Son would be the firstborn that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.among many brothers and sisters.

Now this verse has been a point of Now this verse has been a point of debate for centuries. The question is, debate for centuries. The question is, does it say that God has predestined does it say that God has predestined the ones that are going to be saved? I the ones that are going to be saved? I don’t believe so. Two concepts are at don’t believe so. Two concepts are at

work here. Foreknowledge and work here. Foreknowledge and predestination are related but not the predestination are related but not the

same.same.

God foreknew everything that would God foreknew everything that would ever happen. He knows everything. ever happen. He knows everything.

But foreknowledge does not mean that But foreknowledge does not mean that God causes everything that happens. God causes everything that happens. However, the term "predestined" does However, the term "predestined" does talk about God causing something to talk about God causing something to happen. Predestination denotes an happen. Predestination denotes an

intentional act on God’s part.intentional act on God’s part.

Now, with that difference in mind, read Now, with that difference in mind, read verse 29 again. verse 29 again. Romans 8:29Romans 8:29 NET NET

Substituting some words, this verse Substituting some words, this verse says that those God knows says that those God knows

beforehand will respond to His call, He beforehand will respond to His call, He causes them to be conformed to the causes them to be conformed to the

likeness of His Son. In context with the likeness of His Son. In context with the previous verse, we can say that He previous verse, we can say that He uses all things that we go through to uses all things that we go through to

do that.do that.

The powerful truth of the gospel is that The powerful truth of the gospel is that God loves you just as you are, but He God loves you just as you are, but He loves you too much to leave you that loves you too much to leave you that

way. He wants you to be just like way. He wants you to be just like Jesus. When we turn our life over to Jesus. When we turn our life over to Him, we say, "God, you are my Lord, Him, we say, "God, you are my Lord, take my life and the mess that I have take my life and the mess that I have

made of it and do something."made of it and do something."

And He does! Using the experiences And He does! Using the experiences that we go through, both good and that we go through, both good and

bad, He starts shaping us through His bad, He starts shaping us through His Spirit, through His Word, through our Spirit, through His Word, through our

interaction with other Christian people, interaction with other Christian people, teachers and advisors.teachers and advisors.

And it’s not some arbitrary process. God And it’s not some arbitrary process. God knows exactly what He’s molding us knows exactly what He’s molding us into. He has a very well defined plan. into. He has a very well defined plan. He is making us into "He is making us into "the likeness of the likeness of

His SonHis Son." Honestly, it’s a process that ." Honestly, it’s a process that is never complete in this lifetime. But is never complete in this lifetime. But the promise of Scripture is that it will the promise of Scripture is that it will

be finished some day.be finished some day.

There are a lot of big words, theological There are a lot of big words, theological sounding words there. We can explain sounding words there. We can explain

them a little bit, but something that I them a little bit, but something that I want you to notice is that everything want you to notice is that everything that is happening in this verse is the that is happening in this verse is the

work of God in the life of the Christian. work of God in the life of the Christian. The Christian is not doing any of this. The Christian is not doing any of this.

This is God’s work in your life.This is God’s work in your life.

You can’t do it on your own. Nobody You can’t do it on your own. Nobody else can do it for you.else can do it for you.

"Those he predestined" referring back "Those he predestined" referring back to the previous verse ofto the previous verse of those who he those who he

caused to be like Jesus, "he also caused to be like Jesus, "he also called." The biblical concept of "the called." The biblical concept of "the

call" is that God calls out through His call" is that God calls out through His messengers with a call to salvation.messengers with a call to salvation.

He wants to save us, and He calls out to He wants to save us, and He calls out to the world with the message about the world with the message about

Jesus. Maybe Jesus. Maybe John 3:16John 3:16 is the clearest is the clearest and best known call from God. "and best known call from God. He holds the keys to eternal life.He holds the keys to eternal life.Next it says "Next it says "those he called, he also those he called, he also justifiedjustified." The term "justified" means ." The term "justified" means

"made right." The best way to describe "made right." The best way to describe it’s meaning is to remember that if I am it’s meaning is to remember that if I am justified I am made "just as if I’d never justified I am made "just as if I’d never

sinned."sinned."

Only God can justify a sinful person. Only God can justify a sinful person. Notice the last phrase. "Notice the last phrase. "Those he Those he

justified, he also glorifiedjustified, he also glorified." There is a ." There is a whole lot of meat in those verses, but whole lot of meat in those verses, but the main thing I want you to notice is the main thing I want you to notice is this. God is working on a process by this. God is working on a process by which he is accomplishing "glory" in which he is accomplishing "glory" in

your life.your life.

It is His work to change you from a sinful It is His work to change you from a sinful human being into something that is human being into something that is glorious, that looks a whole lot like glorious, that looks a whole lot like Jesus. That is a great end to the Jesus. That is a great end to the

journey we are on in this life. journey we are on in this life.

Many years ago My Mother & I were Many years ago My Mother & I were driving from Kansas to Phoenix to visit driving from Kansas to Phoenix to visit younger sister Alice. Along the way we younger sister Alice. Along the way we

saw big signs indicating we were saw big signs indicating we were about to arrive at the turn off for the about to arrive at the turn off for the

road to the huge, famous meteorroad to the huge, famous meteor crater. We decided to turn off the crater. We decided to turn off the

freeway and go check it out. A few freeway and go check it out. A few miles of traveling out of the way in the miles of traveling out of the way in the

desert, we arrived at the crater.desert, we arrived at the crater.

It didn’t take long to see it was just a big It didn’t take long to see it was just a big hole in the ground. We were a bit hole in the ground. We were a bit

upset and let down having traveled upset and let down having traveled those few extra miles in the hot desert those few extra miles in the hot desert and paying the admission fee to see a and paying the admission fee to see a

big hole in the ground. I guess we big hole in the ground. I guess we should have known what to expect, but should have known what to expect, but

we didn’t! It was a disappointment. we didn’t! It was a disappointment.

I honestly wonder if that isn’t one of the I honestly wonder if that isn’t one of the fears that many people have. They fears that many people have. They

wonder if it wouldn’t be easier to float wonder if it wouldn’t be easier to float through life,through life, ratherrather than beginning a than beginning a

journey that is not always easy, and is journey that is not always easy, and is sometimes painful. sometimes painful.

But Paul addresses that fear by But Paul addresses that fear by promising that the journey is worth it promising that the journey is worth it because of the glory that God has in because of the glory that God has in

store for us.store for us.Part of Paul’s argument here is that we Part of Paul’s argument here is that we

shouldn’t fear that. shouldn’t fear that.

The good news is that the glory God has The good news is that the glory God has in store for His children will make us in store for His children will make us forget all about the difficulty of the forget all about the difficulty of the

journey. The truth that Paul uses to journey. The truth that Paul uses to squelch our fears of the journey is this. squelch our fears of the journey is this.

When we make Jesus our Lord, we When we make Jesus our Lord, we don’t have to be afraid of this life. don’t have to be afraid of this life.

We are plugged into God’s purpose We are plugged into God’s purpose from the time we give our lives to Him, from the time we give our lives to Him, and He is at work making us into the and He is at work making us into the

image of His Son.image of His Son.I expect none of us have had recurring I expect none of us have had recurring nightmares about somebody chasing nightmares about somebody chasing

us for years. us for years.

No doubt there is some psychological No doubt there is some psychological reason that could be given. But I reason that could be given. But I

believe there is a spiritual reason. We believe there is a spiritual reason. We don’t have any reason to be afraid don’t have any reason to be afraid anymore. And although there are anymore. And although there are

times that fear rears its ugly head in times that fear rears its ugly head in my life, the words of Paul in my life, the words of Paul in Romans 8Romans 8 give me courage to overcome all my give me courage to overcome all my

fears.fears.

Remember, we are not on our own. And Remember, we are not on our own. And the one who is with us loves us the one who is with us loves us

unconditionally. And He is not figuring unconditionally. And He is not figuring things out as He goes, but He is things out as He goes, but He is
