Called to Hawaii Our journey from Ohio to Oahu
Called to Hawaii?
We understand that some may struggle with the idea that God is calling us to a place commonly referred to as 'paradise' but moving away from Ohio is going to be hard for us.
Leaving Ohio will be difficult
Our kids were born in Ohio
We must leave most our 'stuff' behind
Our extended family live within a 5 hr. drive
We have deep friendships here
From Ohio to Oahu
It wasn't our idea to move to Hawaii but when we learned about the great need and the strategic nature of reaching such a diverse group of students our hearts were stirred to pray about whether God is indeed calling us to go. We prayed and God said "Yes!"
Isaiah 55:4-5
See, I have made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander of the peoples. Surely you will summon nations you know not, and nations that do not know you will hasten to you, because of the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, for He has endowed you with splendor.

Our focus: College Students
Nineteen million students study at 4,300 colleges and universities in the United States.
There are challenges and opportunities in reaching them for Christ. They include…
Challenges
UNREACHED
*More than 70% of students remain unreached by the Gospel each year.
*…unreached by the major campus ministry groups including The Navigators. The University: An Unreached People Group, 2011, Leadership U.
Challenges
SKEPTICISM
Negative perceptions toward the Christian faith have outweighed the positives as a growing percentage of young people are abandoning Christianity.
Challenges
RELATIVISM
Many students reject absolute truth. They have be taught that “all is relative.” The demand is to be “tolerant.”
Challenges
PRESSURES
> rampant immorality and promiscuity> damaging effects of internet pornography> pressure to party, drink, do drugs> anti-Christian sentiments in many classrooms
and academic environments
Opportunities
THE NEXT GENERATION
Today’s college students become tomorrow’s leaders in the U.S. and other nations.
Opportunities
Why Reach College Students?
“…change the university and you change the world.”
-Charles Malik, former president of the General Assembly to the United Nations
Opportunities
CRITICAL TIME
Students are away from home for the first time, facing new pressures and making decisions affecting the rest of their lives. We want to point them to Christ for answers!
Opportunities
RESPONSIVE
Often, when trust is earned, students will consider the Bible and the claims of Christ. Students are open to authentic expressions of faith.
Opportunities
MULTIPLIED INFLUENCE
Campus living provides natural and large networks of relationships at students’ doorsteps. They can multiply their spiritual influence through this network.
After graduating, students can also take what they have learned and reach others where they will live and work.
Who are the Collegiate Navs?
Our 600+ staff minister on more than 170 campuses in the United States.
Our vision is to reach, disciple, and equip students to follow Christ and make disciples for the rest of their lives.
How we reach students
EVANGELISM
As relationships build, trust develops. When trust is established, students are more willing to talk about Jesus.
How we disciple students
LIFE-ON-LIFE DISCIPLESHIP
We disciple students one-to-one and life-on-life. We help them study God’s Word, personally apply it, and hide it in their hearts. We help them pray, spend personal time with the Lord, become Christ-like in character, balance priorities, and communicate their faith to others.
How we equip students
SPIRITUAL GENERATIONS
We train students to reach others who will reach others, producing spiritual generations. (2 Timothy 2:2)
How we equip students
STRATEGIC EVENTS
Our large-group conferences and retreats develop and enhance relationships and growth in Christ.
University of Hawaii
In 2006, The Navigators leadership made a commitment to start 10 new ministries on ethnically diverse campuses in the United States. University of Hawaii was on the top of that list.
Paradise Lost
Only 40 percent claim to be Christians
Vast majority of people are secular
More culturally, ethnically and racially diverse than any other state in America
Open to authentic expressions of faith
Our Vision for Hawaii
Restart a thriving, reproducing ministry at the University of Hawaii in Manoa
Using UH as a hub, start other collegiate ministries across Hawaii
Recruit and train locals to lead ministries
Living By Faith
Navigator ministry is supported by the gifts of interested family, friends, and churches.
All staff are responsible to raise 100% of the funds needed for ministry.
Navigator staff reach full funding by trusting God for financial partners who give regular monthly or annual gifts.
Living on Oahu
general cost of living is 70% higher than Ohio
1200 square foot house costs $750,000
moving is expensive because of distance and shipping costs
Current Needs
Currently, we need $29,750 for moving and start-up expenses and $2,760 in new monthly support.
Partnering With Us
In order for us to accomplish all that God has for us in Hawaii we need to be fully funded. To be fully funded we need lots of ministry partners who can give $50-$100 a month and a few champions who can give $5,000-$10,000 annually.
Partnering with us
Would you prayerfully consider becoming a financial ministry partner and/or champion?
Prayer Requests
God's provision - financial and material needs
Housing - that our sells quickly and that God provides 'miracle' housing for us in Hawaii
Spiritual protection - we're in a very vulnerable place as we transition from KSU to UH
