A. Resurrection in the OTResurrection of men and Christ are taught in the OT - Job 19:25-27Specific OT prophecies of resurrection of the human body - Job 14:13-15, Isa 26:19, Dan 12:2The resurrection of Christ - Ps 16:9-10 - not seeing corruption is not being in the ground long enough for a body to decay (Acts 2:24-31)Ps 22: 22, 118:22-24


B. Christ’s prediction of his own resurrection

These are frequent and explicit in the Gospels, making it hard to question:Matt 16:21, 17:23, 20:17-19, 28-29, 31-32, Mk 9:30-32


C. Proofs of the resurrection of Christ

There is a lot of NT evidence for the resurrection - at least 17 post resurrection appearances:1. To Mary Magdalene - Jn 20:11-172. To women - Matt 28:9-103. To Peter - Lk 24:344. Emmaus Road - Lk 24:13-355. When Thomas was absent - Lk 26:34-43


6. To the 11 a week after the resurrection - Jn 20:26-29 7. To 7 disciples by Galilee - Jn 21:1-238. To 500 - 1 Cor 15:69. To James, the Lord’s brother - 1 Cor 15:710. To the 11 on the mountain in Galilee - Matt 28:16-2011. When ascending from the Mt. of Olives - Lk 24:44ff12. To Stephen before he was martyred - Acts 7:55-56

D. Reasons for the resurrection

Christ arose...1. Because of who he is - Acts 2:242. To fulfill the Davidic covenant - 2 Sam 7:12-16, Isa 9:6-7, Lk 1:33-353. To give resurrection life - Jn 10:10-11, 11:25-26, Eph 2:64. To be the source of resurrection power - Matt 28:18, Eph 1:19-21


5. To be head over the church - Eph 1:20-236. Because our justification has been accomplished - Rom 4:257. To be the firstfruits of resurrection - 1 Cor 15: 20-23


E. The significance of the resurrectionThe resurrection is the most important proof for the deity of Christ - power over death and sin is therefore the divine standard. Chafer suggests the first day of the week in this dispensation is about commemorating the resurrection not observing the sabbath. 1 Cor 15:17 -And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins.Thursday 19 May 2011

A. The fact of the ascension of ChristMk 16:19, Lk 24:50-51, Act 1:9-11 - predicted in Jn 20:17Acts 1:9-11 says this was a literal fact -”...he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. And while they were gazing into heaven as he went...This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven."There is significance in this being a literal event as Jesus will return in the same way.


B. The arrival of Christ in heaven

On a number of occasions scripture testifies to Christ having arrived in heaven:Acts 2:33-36, 3:21, 7:55-56, 9:3-6, Eph 1:20-22, Php 2:6-11, Heb 1:3, 13, 2:7, Rev 1:7, 13-18, 5:5-12, 6:9-17, 14:1-5, 19:11-16


C. The meaning of the Ascension

The return of Christ to heaven marked the end of his earthly ministry. Also his glory, which had been hidden whilst he was on earth, returned. His entrance into heaven was in triumph and into a new work at the right hand of the Father.Ps 110:1, Matt 22:24, Mk 12:36, 16:19, Lk 20:42-43


In heaven he is universal Lord awaiting his triumphal second coming to earth. Christ is on the Fathers throne in heaven, not the Davidic earthly throne. Earth will one day be his footstool and he will have a throne on earth - Matt 25:31

1. As high priest Christ ministers in heaven on behalf of those who belong to him in the world. Heb 8:1-2Being received by the Father shows his earthly ministry has been accepted. Sitting on the Fathers throne shows that he is expecting a time when his kingdom will come on earth and his will be done “on earth as in heaven” The time will come whenRev 11:15 -"The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever." (also Ps 2:8)


2. As high priest he gives spiritual gifts - spiritual abilities given by the HSp.Rom 12:3-8, 1 Cor 12:4-11 - Chafer says these are examples, but that the life has to be wholly yielded to God for the gift to be fully experienced - Rom 12:1-2, 6-8Also Eph 4:7-11 shows gifts of men given locally to the church1 Cor 12:11 -All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.


3. The ascended Christ intercedes for his people - begun by him before he left the earth - Jn 17:1-26 - he does this knowing the weakness and limitations of his people - his care f Peter is used to illustrate this - Lk 22:31-32Christ’s intercession is unendingHeb 7:25 -he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.


4. Christ stands before God on behalf of his own - sin separates the sinner from God and is removed only by what Jesus did. 1 Jn 1:9What effect does our sin have upon a holy God?Because of Christ’s advocacy we have absolute security even when we are sinning! An advocate pleads the case of anotherHeb 9:24 -For Christ has entered... into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf.


Rev 12:10 - ...for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God.Satan accuses us before God day and night - we need the intercession of Jesus. God does not treat any sin lightly and it needs the blood of Jesus to be pleaded before God to preserve and free us from Gods righteous judgement of sin.


This knowledge is given to help us stop sinning, not to make excuses for us to sin - 1 Jn 2:1 -My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.


E. The present work of Christ on earthChrist is said to indwell and be with his church even whilst he is in heaven - Matt 28:18-20He abides in his church by giving eternal life to them - Jn 1:4, 10;10, 11:25Jn 14:23 -"If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.”Christ calls people to his body, empowers and sanctifies them to be his witnesses on earth.Thursday 19 May 2011
