Numbers 33:3-4

3. And they journeyed from Rameses in the first month, on the fifteenth day of the first month; on the morrow after the passover the children of Israel went out with a high hand in the sight of all the Egyptians,

4. while the Egyptians were burying all their first-born, whom Jehovah had smitten among them: upon their gods also Jehovah executed judgments.

Exodus 11 1. And Jehovah said unto Moses, Yet one plague more will I bring

upon Pharaoh, and upon Egypt; afterwards he will let you go hence: when he shall let you go, he shall surely thrust you out hence altogether.

2. Speak now in the ears of the people, and let them ask every man of his neighbor, and every woman of her neighbor, jewels of silver, and jewels of gold.

3. And Jehovah gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians. Moreover the man Moses was very great in the land of Egypt, in the sight of Pharaoh's servants, and in the sight of the people.

4. And Moses said, Thus saith Jehovah, About midnight will I go out into the midst of Egypt:

5. and all the first-born in the land of Egypt shall die, from the first-born of Pharaoh that sitteth upon his throne, even unto the first-born of the maid-servant that is behind the mill; and all the first-born of cattle.

6. And there shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt, such as there hath not been, nor shall be any more.

Exodus 11

7. But against any of the children of Israel shall not a dog move his tongue, against man or beast: that ye may know how that Jehovah doth make a distinction between the Egyptians and Israel.

8. And all these thy servants shall come down unto me, and bow down themselves unto me, saying, Get thee out, and all the people that follow thee: and after that I will go out. And he went out from Pharaoh in hot anger.

9. And Jehovah said unto Moses, Pharaoh will not hearken unto you; that my wonders may be multiplied in the land of Egypt.

10. And Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh: and Jehovah hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he did not let the children of Israel go out of his land.

Exodus 12 1. And Jehovah spake unto Moses and Aaron in the land of

Egypt, saying, 2. This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it

shall be the first month of the year to you. 3. Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the

tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to their fathers' houses, a lamb for a household:

4. and if the household be too little for a lamb, then shall he and his neighbor next unto his house take one according to the number of the souls; according to every man's eating ye shall make your count for the lamb.

5. Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male a year old: ye shall take it from the sheep, or from the goats:

6. and ye shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month; and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it at even.

Exodus 12 7. And they shall take of the blood, and put it on the two side-posts and

on the lintel, upon the houses wherein they shall eat it. 8. And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and

unleavened bread; with bitter herbs they shall eat it. 9. Eat not of it raw, nor boiled at all with water, but roast with fire; its

head with its legs and with the inwards thereof. 10. And ye shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; but that which

remaineth of it until the morning ye shall burn with fire. 11. And thus shall ye eat it: with your loins girded, your shoes on your

feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is Jehovah's passover.

12. For I will go through the land of Egypt in that night, and will smite all the first-born in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am Jehovah.

13. And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and there shall no plague be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.

A Strange Command

Moses has spoken to the people and his words were sober and even a little bit disconcerting. The selection and killing of a lamb was not so unusual, as sacrifice was an integral part of their worship. Such offerings were regularly killed and depending on the kind of offering, the flesh was burnt, or eaten. But, the aspect of the command that was so disturbing was that the blood was to be put on the door frame.

1 Corinthians 5:7

Purge out the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, even as ye are unleavened. For our passover also hath been sacrificed, even Christ

The type / antitype

• The crucifixion of Jesus, our Passover is the ANTITYPE

• The Passover Lamb is the TYPE

The Purpose of the AntitypeExodus 12:13-14

And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and there shall no plague be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt. 14. And this day shall be unto you for a memorial, and ye shall keep it a feast to Jehovah: throughout your generations ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.

Deliverance

• The Passover Lamb died and its blood was placed on the doorposts and lintel

• When the Destroyer saw the blood, he passed over the house and did NOT smite the firstborn with death (as was done in all the houses of the Egyptians)

• After this last plague the Egyptians sent the Israelites out of their land in haste

Israel was delivered• From Egyptian bondage

– God accomplished their “redemption”

• From the last plague– God provided the Israelites

with a means of substituting the death of the Passover lamb – in place of their firstborn.

– A death had to occur, but the innocent lamb was killed and its blood sufficed

The Comparison

• A Lamb– it was to be a male (from

sheep or goats)– a year old– without blemish

• Was slain– its flesh would be eaten– its blood would be placed

on the door frame– no bone was to be broken– no leftovers were to remain

(any remnants not eaten were to be burned)

• Christ, our passover– 1 Corinthians 5:7– Without sin, cf. Hebrews

4:15

• Was crucified– Eating his flesh, drinking

his blood – John 6:51-58– His blood was on the wood

of the cross– No bone was broken –

John 19:31-36– His flesh did not see

corruption – Acts 2:23-31

This sacrifice prefigured many aspects of the death of Jesus

a) John identified Jesus as the “lamb of God” - John 1:36 b) Jesus was innocent (without sin) c) In death He was our substitute – the divinely

appointed substitute, the One who would die for us d) we are to eat His flesh – cf. John 6:51 I am the living

bread which came down out of heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: yea and the bread which I will give is my flesh, for the life of the world.

e) but, most importantly, when God sees the “blood” of Jesus, He will pass over us in the day of judgment, sparing us from the eternal death that will come upon the unfaithful, the unbelieving

Observations

• The “shadow” (type) of the LAMB is but a part of a much broader picture.

• The entire Passover event & feast have typical elements that foreshadow the REDEMPTION we have in Christ, “our passover”

• All of the Jewish feasts, together with all of the sacrifices, and the very priesthood with the tabernacle COMBINE to provide a complex “shadow” of the reality that was to come: Jesus

Shadows in the OT

Colossians 2:16-17 (NASB)

• Therefore let no one act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day-- 17 things which are a mere shadow of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ.

Jesus, the lamb of God

John 1:28-29 These things took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing. 29 The next day he saw Jesus coming to him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

Revelation 7:9-10 After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude, which no one could count, from every nation and all tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, and palm branches were in their hands; 10 and they cry out with a loud voice, saying, "Salvation to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb."

Isaiah 53:6-7

All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him. 7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He did not open His mouth; Like a lamb that is led to slaughter, And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers, So He did not open His mouth.

1 Peter 1:18-19

knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, 19 but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.

Romans 5:6

For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.

But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 1 Corinthians 15:3 For I delivered

to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures
