Bon Dance 盆おどり

Please come, bring your kimonos, happi coats and dance around the yagura and enjoy the many food items: bentos, BBQ sticks,

saimin, sushi, yaki soba, soba salad, spam musubi, Andagi (Okinawan donuts), hot dog, chili, chili and rice, turkey jook, waffle dog, juice, soda, shave ice, water, etc.

Food Booths will open at 4:30pm

Kiddie games will also be available

Helping with Bon Dance Preparation: If you are willing to help with Bon Dance preparation, your help is most appreciated. Please come to the Temple on Thursday, Aug 14 and/or Friday, Aug 15 and/or Saturday, Aug 16 at 9:00 a.m. If you are only avail-able in the evening during Bon Dance hours, we can also use your help. Please contact the Temple for more information.

Bon Dance Practice: Bon dance practice will be held Tuesday, August 12 and Wednesday, August 13, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome to practice or learn from instructors in the inner circle.

Japanese Buddhism in Hawaii has a very unique cultural background.

In Japan, Buddhist customs differ from village to village, town to town,

prefecture to prefecture. This is because Buddhism has been localized to fit to the custom

in each area. Since Japanese immigrants came to Hawaii from the various regions of

Japan, ceremonial customs are different according to the area where the family came from.

However, as time passes, those customs are becoming unclear and more confusing for the

younger generations. Because of this confusion, younger generations seem to be going

away from Buddhism by saying that Buddhism is hard to understand. Therefore, in this

article, I would like to explain the standard procedure of doing a service. As the first, let me

show you the two common procedures of having funerals among the members of Jodo

Mission of Hawaii.

decisions to arrange a funeral service.

Thank you to all who came to help with the O-Toba set up and temple general

cleaning on July 13th. As you can see from the photos on this page, it is hard work to put

the O-Tobas up. This year we did not have very much help, but those who did come,

O-Bon services. Thank you to the Fujinkai ladies who prepared meals for the ministers and

workers during the three days of O-Bon services. Thank you to the Sr. YBA for providing

beautiful chrysanthemum potted plants for sale. Thank you to Calvin Hara and the Kiwanis

Club for directing traffic.

Sermon by Rev. Kanjun Nakano Given on June 22, 2014

Christians say that God lives within them through faith, but this does

not mean that God and man can become the same one. In Buddhism, we

have the Buddha nature within ourselves. If we realize the Buddhist truth,

we can become a Buddha. Buddhism is the way for everyone to find and

reveal the Buddha nature within himself or herself. By following the path of

Buddhism, everyone can attain the perfect peace and bliss as Buddha did so.

Well, St. Honen deeply considered the Buddha nature. St. Honen reached a conclusion

that the teachings should be practical rather than theoretical. However excellent the teachings

may be, they are of no use if we cannot practice to attain enlightenment. The final goal of Bud-

dhism is for everyone to attain enlightenment.

St. Honen showed us the way to reach the final goal of Buddhism. It is the Onenbutsu.

The Onenbutsu is to pray by reciting the Buddha’s name. Please recite the Buddha’s name as

many times as you possibly can in this world.

Generally speaking, we understand Buddhism in two ways. One way is through the

teachings of Buddha. The other way is through becoming an enlightened one like Buddha.

The former way is the same as in other religions such as Christianity. Buddhism is the

teaching which was revealed by Shakyamuni Buddha, an historical person. Christianity is the

gospel which was preached by Jesus Christ, also an historical person.

Modern studies show that not every Buddhist scripture is the teaching of Shakyamuni

Buddha. However, many Buddhists believe them all to be his teaching.

The way of becoming an enlightened one is unique to Buddhism as compared to Christi-

anity. Christianity is the teachings of God through Jesus Christ. But is is not the way of becom-

ing like God. Since God is the creator of this world, man cannot become like God.

Guest Speaker at Father’s Day Service

Richard Kimura who teaches Karate at Jodo Mission was

our guest speaker on June 15, 2014. Kimura sensei gave an

interesting talk about Karate as a form of marshal arts but he

also tries to teach his students not only the fighting part or self-

defense marshal arts but also you must have a heart—taking in-

to consideration mind, body and soul.

One of the most interesting thing he mentioned was that as a former NCIS

investigator, he said many of the criminals he encountered could have had their

lives changed or gone in a different direction if only they had gone to church or

had a teacher to guide them that it isn’t only the fighting that is important but

you must balance your mind, body and soul.
