VISION FOR THE FUTURE (5) By Rev. Yubun Narashiba

Japanese Buddhism in Hawaii has a very unique cultural background.

In Japan, Buddhist customs differ from village to village, town to town,

prefecture to prefecture. This is because Buddhism has been localized to fit to the custom

in each area. Since Japanese immigrants came to Hawaii from the various regions of

Japan, ceremonial customs are different according to the area where the family came from.

However, as time passes, those customs are becoming unclear and more confusing for the

younger generations. Because of this confusion, younger generations seem to be going

away from Buddhism by saying that Buddhism is hard to understand. Therefore, in this

article, I would like to explain the standard procedure of doing a service. As the first, let me

show you the two common procedures of having funerals among the members of Jodo

Mission of Hawaii.

Note: Above two service procedures are purely for informational purpose. We shall honor your family customs and

decisions to arrange a funeral service.

Thank You to All Who Participated with O-Toba Set Up

Thank you to all who came to help with the O-Toba set up and general cleaning of the temple and Nokotsudo or Columbarium on Sunday, July 3rd. As you can see from the photos on this page, there were so many O-Tobas to set up. It takes a lot of manpower to put the O-Tobas up. [These photos were taken in 2015 when it was a hot, sunny day but on July 3rd, it was a rainy day.] Also thank you to the women who helped clean our temple and Nokotsudo or Columbarium and for those who prepared the delicious lunch!

With the help of many of you (members, relatives and friends of members), we were able to have the O-Tobas set up and ready for O-Bon services. See photo to the right showing all the O-Tobas set up! This is hard work! It is with all your

kokua that it is possible to welcome the departed spirits to Jodo Mission. Hope every-one enjoyed yourselves and that while you worked hard, you enjoyed the fellowship, which is very important. ARIGATO!

All the O-Tobas were beautifully written by Rev. Narashiba. Thank you very much!

O-Bon Services: THANK YOU Bishop Hara and Rev. Narashiba for performing the seven O-Bon services and Rev. Koji Ezaki from Haleiwa Jodo Mission and Rev. Goshin Nakamura of Gudon-in Temple in Miyagi-ken in Japan, who came to assist. Special thank you to Rev. Narashiba who read all the names of O-Toba and Chutoba offerings. Thank you Rev. Narashiba and Rev. Nakano for the many private O-Toba services conducted. Thank you Mae Yorimoto for handling the chochin orders, setup and preparing the Chutoba memorial tablets. Thank you to the Fujinkai ladies who prepared meals for the ministers and workers during the three days of O-Bon services. Thank you to the Sr. YBA for providing beautiful chrysanthemum potted plants for sale. Thank you to Akiko Nishiyama and Gail Masaki for taking care of the regis-

tration desk and Clifford Miyamoto for taking care of the Choba or donation desk.. Thank you to Calvin Hara and the Kiwanis Club for directing traffic. Thank you to Tsutomu Nakai Sensei for sending our ancestors’ spirits back to the Pure Land with Taiko drum music until next year!

Thank you to all those who purchased an O-Toba and came to visit their O-Toba and those who purchased a Chutoba

for an O-Bon Service. Thank you for attending our O-Bon Services. Most important—thank you for remembering your beloved ancestors!

Haleiwa Jodo Mission O-Bon Service On July 8 and 9, 2016, Haleiwa Jodo Mission had its O-Bon Ser-vices and Toro Nagashi on July 9, 2016. As the only other Jodo Shu tem-ple on Oahu, some members of Betsuin and ministers Rev. Narashiba and Rev. Nakamura went to help. It is so beautiful to see all the lanterns floating. This year, because of the tide, the toro launching was at 10 p.m. and many either did not attend or did not pick up their lanterns. With the help of volunteers, all the lanterns went on their way.

More Jodo Mission of Hawaii O-Bon Photos

After O-Bon Service, families, gather and visit their O-Tobas.

Long lines of people in the background waiting for their turn to offer incense. While others waited for their spon-sor’s name to be called, some were happy to have their photos taken.

Walk through each row of O-Tobas with the minis-ters. There were a lot of Hatsubon people who joined the ministers and experienced walking through each row of O-Tobas.

After walking through each row of O-Tobas, you are able to offer incense

Sr. YBA Jo Ann Matsuo and Peggy Miyamoto were helped by Sophie Narashiba.
