Bulletin - OCTOBER 2015
(#1227-10145
Bazaar
Bazaar will be held on Sunday, October 18, 2015
(8:00am –1:00pm)
Bazaar preparation: Your help is needed on Sunday, October 11 at 11:00 a.m. to bring out all the stored Bazaar items to the Social Hall. Throughout the year people drop off items to be sold at the Annual Bazaar and these items are stored. Now we need to take out these stored items. Lunch will be
provided.
Also, during the week from Monday, October 12 to Saturday, October 17, beginning at 9:00 a.m. each day, help is needed to sort, organize and price the many donated items in preparation of the Bazaar.
Donations of useable clothing, household items, plants, baked goods, craft items, etc. are welcomed and greatly appreciated. Please feel free to drop non-perishable items off anytime during our office hours:
Monday to Saturday: 8 am—5 pm Sunday & holidays: 8 am—3 pm
No furniture or bulky items will be accepted. All items must be dropped-off at the Temple.
Socia l Media Communication Have you heard your chil-
dren or grandchildren talk
about Facebook, Insta-
gram, Twitter and Vine,
Snapchat, etc. These are
forms of social media
which are computer gener-
ated and a form of internet
communication. Did you ever wonder what is this new way of communicating? If so,
please come to hear our guest speakers on Sunday, October 25, 2015 at 10 a.m. The
guest speakers are Ryan Ozawa, Burt Lum and Ian Kitajima.
They will try to explain the various forms of social media communication and maybe
you will be able to better communicate with your children or grandchildren or great grand-
children. For example, if you are unable to go to an event, i.e. a soccer game or baseball
game that your grandchild is playing, you might be able to see the game if someone is taking
pictures or videotaping it. So instantly you are also seeing the game. Also, even if there are
no photos taken, someone may still communicate what was happening through their cell
phone. Cell phones are also a form of social media communication as the person calling
does not have to go to a land phone to call you but could instantly contact you.
There are so many types of cell phones, smart phones, which have cameras, internet
access, etc. They may be able to describe the various choices available. Ryan and Burt have
their own radio program each week and are on Hawaii News Now each week and are called
“the Geeks”.
For parents, you may want to know how do I keep up with the latest social apps and
sites teens are using? At what age should my children be for me to allow them to use Face-
book and Instagram. Twitter and Vine, and Snapchat, and other social medias? What are the
basics my child needs to know about social media?
If you have questions, please write them down and bring them with you on October 25.
After their talk and also during their talk, there would be a question and answer session. So
please join us on Sunday, October 25, 2015 at 10:00 a.m.

On August 23, 2015, Rose Nakamura,
Project Administrator for Project
Dana was our guest speaker who spoke
about the many services offered by the
Project Dana volunteers.. She did
stress about having volunteers from our
temple to assist our temple members.
Are you willing to be a volunteer for
Project Dana? Project Dana trains all
volunteers. Some of the services this
program offers are listed on the flyer on
the right, i.e. home visits, telephone
visits, family caregivers support, home
safety assessments, transportation for
medical appointments, grocery shop-
ping, religious services.
If you did not attend this talk on
Project Dana and are interested, please
check the Jodo Mission office and there
are extra materials that were left.
Also attending the Project Dana session as a guest of Rose Nakamura,
was Jan Nakamura of Hakalau Jodo Mission who sometimes lives in
Honolulu because of family. Jan Nakamura talked about how at Hakalau
Jodo Mission a former restaurant owner (Miyo’s Restaurant) and her friend
cook for the seniors who gather each week at Hakalau Jodo Mission. Pro-
ject Dana assists the elderly to come to Hakalau Jodo Mission. The seniors
who are homebound look forward to going to Hakalau to socialize and to
meet others and also for Miyo’s home cooking. There is a woman by the
name of Akiko who is the outreach person at Hakalau Jodo Mission who
arranges the various groups. This is such a wonderful program!
Do you have any comments? We would love to hear from you. Thank you.

Naginata Japanese Martial Art
On Sunday, August 30, 2015, we were
fortunate to have Hanae Miura Sensei as
our guest speaker at our Sunday Service.
Miura Sensei teaches Naginata every
Saturday afternoon at Jodo Mission. Also
assisting with the English was Ken Sato.
At this service, they explained the
origin of Naginata. In the early days of
1603, women used Naginata as self-
defensive arms with beautiful gold lac-
quered handles.
Miura Sensei and Ken Sato left some
informational materials. If you are inter-
ested, please check with the Jodo Mission
office.
We are working on a demonstration
session the next time so you can visually
see Naginata in action. Please look for-
ward to a future time.
Two ladies in their nineties:
Mrs. Yoshiko Kitagawa (96)
and Mrs. Joyce Yoshikawa
(93) are regularly seen at Sun-
day Services.
Left: Each Keiro received a box of
chocolates with an impressive cover!

BON DANCE—Taiko Photos
Dragon Beat with instructor Tsutomu Nakai began each Bon Dance day
(August 14 and 15, 2015) with their taiko drums. Following are some photos taken.
The sound of the taiko drums
cannot be felt by photos. You
must come next year to hear
the taiko drums. Above photo
shows the big drums which
need lots of muscles to beat to
the rhythm. The taiko drums
played by children (photo at
right) need their tiny muscles as
they play to the beat as the
Sensei leads them.
People watched
with umbrellas as
the taiko group
played on Friday
night in the rain.
We really appreciate
the taiko group
playing each even-
ing to begin our Bon
Dance!
What a wonderful
way to begin our
Bon Dance!

What is “Perpetual Memorial
Service?” (Eitaikyo)
This record of a perpetual memorial service and is called Eitaikyo in Japanese. When the date of death occurs for a person listed on this record, the ministers pray for that individual dur-ing the morning service. The prayers will contin-ue each year for as long as Jodo Mission ex-ists. Anyone can be included in it. You may put your own name on the list, too. This also helps when it is difficult to have memorial services. We also welcome you to attend the morning service at 8:30am.
How to apply
Stop by the office, and fill out the application form. Each name costs $200. After the applica-tion is accepted, the name will be listed on the record.
Bishop Gensho Hara Lahaina, Maui
Oldest man on Keiro Sunday was Teruto Soma
(88) who was showing Takeru Nii (10) that he
can still play with Takeru’s yo-yo. Others want-
ed to get into picture: Sophie Narashiba,
A’Marie and Strider Paraso. Looks like they are
all having fun!
