FROM THE EDITORThis is a "sensational" issue of the journal; however,

"sensationalism" is not its purpose. For 30 years we have heard talesof crashed "saucers" and bodies of small spacemen, and most of ushave been totally skeptical. Now Len Stringfield has compiled themost convincing case to date that we may have been wrong and theU.S. Government (possibly others too) may actually have theultimate proof—hardware and alien specimens. The case iscircumstantial and cannot be adequately documented at this time, but it is now bolstered by a multiplicity of new sources who may, intime, talk more openly so that the entire complex of stories can beproperly evaluated. The implications of their collective story areprofound, if true. Len has purposely made public the main featuresof this testimony, knowing full well that it will not stand up asobjective proof in its present form, in order to encourage UFOresearchers to aid in confirming or disproving "crashed saucers andlittle men" for once and for all. He wants and expects penetratingcritiques, and he hopes that more evidence can be uncovered by acooperative effort.

Similarly, the previously unpublished Russian documentreported in this issue speaks of sensational events and high-levelgovernment knowledge that have been withheld from the public. The alleged events need to be authenticated, for, if true, they are ofprofound importance. Astronaut movie films of UFOs on the Moon?NATO missiles "zapped" by UFOs? Detailed documents on UFOsin Russia? There is a clear need to learn how much of all this"sensationalism" is actually true, and to expose as false all that isfalse.

THE 1978 MUFON UFO SYMPOSIUMDAYTON, OHIO, JULY 29 & 30, 1978

By Walt Andrus

The symposium theme "UFOs: AHistorical Perspective on CloseEncounters" aptly described thespeeches delivered at this epic event atthe Dayton Convention Center inDayton, Ohio. Uniquely, the locale wasthe former headquarters of ProjectBlue Book at Wright-Patterson AFB.Even though it was billed as a NationalUFO Symposium, the internationalinfluence was in evidence by thepresence of one of the workshopspeakers, Mrs. Cynthia Hind, MUFONRepresentative from Salisbury,Rhodesia, and a large contingent ofmembers from Canada headed byHenry H. McKay, MUFON CanadianRegional Director.

Hosted by The Ohio UFOInvestigators League (OUFOIL) andsponsored by the Mutual UFONetwork, Inc. (MUFON), this wasundoubtedly our finest symposium inthree distinct categories: the mostouts tanding group of pioneerUFOlogists as speakers, the largestfaci l i ty , and a record-breakingattendance. Every person responsiblefor making this symposium such asuccess is to be commended for theirsuperb work. The Dayton ConventionCenter, as pictured on the front coverof the April 1978 issue of The MUFONUFO Journal, was a most prestigioussetting for this international conclave ofUFOlogists.

This article is written for the peoplewho would have liked to have attendedthe symposium, but were unable to do

v so, due to transportation costs from thefar comers of the world. The majorspeeches are contained in thecopyrighted published copies of the1978 MUFON UFO SymposiumProceedings, that are available fromMUFON, 103 Oldtowne Road, Seguin,Texas 78155, U.S.A. for $6.00 in theU.S.A. and $7.00 in all other countries

postpaid.The 1978 Symposium Proceedings

were dedicated to Mrs. RosettaHolmes, with special acknowledgementto our Staff Artist Donald R. Tucker forthe cover, depicting close encountersof the first, second, third, and fourthkinds, symbolic of the symposiumtheme. We are indebted to our officesecretary, Mrs. Virginia Castner, forthe original typing.

I will not attempt to review all of thepapers presented, but simply providean insight into their contents by quotingfrom the speakers abstract orintroduction. Ted Bloecher, Co-Chairman of* MUFON's HumanoidStudy Group and State SectionDirector for the New Vork City area, titled his paper appropriately "A Surveyof CE3K Reports for 1977." He hasoutlined the material covered in hispaper with his abstract from which he isquoted. "Close encounters, Type III,reports (CEHI's) for 1977 are reviewedand listed systematically. A briefbackground on the historicalprecedents for CEIH reports is given, and cases are reviewed statistically bymonth, by time of day, geographically, and by the types of association betweenentities and objects. Examples from thecase material illustrate special features, such as ground traces, animalreac t ions , phys ica l e f f e c t s ,communication, and other particularfeatures. A table listing all of the CEfflreports known for 1977 is included, which provides a number of specific.pieces of information, including date, time, locale, witness names, numberand height of entities, and other specialfeatures. Case references are providedfor each case."

Richard H. Hall, Editor of TheMUFON UFO Journal, formerlyMUFON International Coordinator, and past Assistant Director of NICAP,

selected as his topic "1967: TheOverlooked UFO Wave and theColorado Project." Quoting from hisabstract, we learn the following: "Amajor wave of UFO sightings occurredin 1967; even by official Air Forcefigures it was the 4th largest in terms ofsightings reported,. yet no one talksabout it. The special significance of the1967 wave is that it occurred during theone full year of investigations by theUniversity of Colorado UFO Project, and everyone deferred to the project inlooking for 'answers'. The only answerwas the Condon Report. This studyanalyzes the wave and demonstratesthat the Colorado Project had amplecase material to investigate during itslifetime, yet failed miserably toaccomplish 'scientific investigation.' Atthe same time, publicity about theproject obscured the sighting wave."

"Retrievals of the Third Kind — ACase Study of Alleged UFOs andOccupants in Military Custody" byLeonard H. Stringfield, MUFONDirector of Public Relations and a StateSection Director, held the key to thepublicity surrounding this year'ssymposium. U.S. Air Force personnelat Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton,Ohio, were quick to deny anyknowledge of Mr. Stringfield'sallegations of witness statements tohaving observed both crashed craft andsmall beings delivered to the. baseduring the regime of Project Blue Bookand later, when queried by the press.Quoting from a few pertinentparagraphs from Leonard's 2-hourpresentation may set the stage for hischallenge.

"Retrievals of the Third Kind relateprimarily to the alien being. To be moreprecise, I refer to incidents where aUFO has allegedly crashed and both itand the occupants were retrieved bymilitary personnel who were

(Symposium, continued)

dispatched to the scene. According tomy sources, these immobilized craftand deceased occupants, described ashumanoid, have been placed in custodyat certain military installations wherethey were studied under the highestsecurity measures." Leonard prefaceshis accounts with this statement. "I amnot in a Providential position to pass apositive or final judgment on theretrieval stories or on my informants. On this tenous ground I must allow forsome marginal error in observation or

, tiny flaw in human judgment for eachreported account. However, let mequote an old adage. "Wherever there issmoke there is fire," and from myposition I certainly can see a helluva lotof smoke!" He continues — "Also, forthe record, I do not possess a singleaffidavit to prove that any one of myinformants has seen a retrieved craft orits occupants. I have only their namesand their testimony. Unfortunately, Icannot use these names. (Editors note:some names were released in his talkand a tape recording of another witnesswas played on the P.A. system.)Anonymity has been requested and willbe respected. The reasons should beobvious to all. (Editors note: obvious toall except the press.) In essence, therefore, the cases I present in thispaper without names to back up theinformant 's test imony can beconstrued as hearsay. If perchance, hearsay is to be my undoing then I mustmake my stand on the merits of my owncredibility which I trust has alreadybeen established in my 29 years of UFOresearch. You are the judge and jury."

Leonard then presented 17 casesor abstracts of exciting testimonials tosubstantiate his study of thiscontroversial area that many hadconsidered nothing but rumors prior tothis time. These cases are veryrevealing, and when placed back-to-back give a high degree of credibilitythat a grand official cover-up does exist. We recommend that you purchase a

' copy of the 1978 Proceedings for thedetails on each case, supplemented bysome added information in this issue.

Dr. J. Allen Hynek, Director of theCenter for UFO Studies, Evanston,Illinois, was the featured speakerSaturday evening. His speech, titled

"UFOs As a Space-Time Singularity,"injected additional theories andhypotheses into the explanation forUFOs after reviewing some of thepredominant ideas as to their origin andthe questions still unanswered. Heleans away from the conventional "nutsand bolts" explanation of physical craftand beings conducting a surveillance ofthe planet Earth. He is searching for anexplanation that not only can explainthe. appearance of craft, humanoids, and their landing traces but the mediumby which vast distances in space may bebridged. This is the fourth time that Dr.Hynek has been the featured speaker ata MUFON Symposium, havingpreviously shared his research efforts in1970 at Peoria, 111., 1973 in Kansas City,Mo., 1976 in Ann Arbor, Mich., and1978 in Dayton, Ohio. It was a pleasureto have the Center for UFO Studies sostrongly represented by Dr. and Mrs.Hynek, along with Allan and ElaineHendry at our symposium.

In his introductory remarks, Dr.Hynek had this to say — "As most ofyou know, MUFON and the Center forUFO Studies have a pleasantcooperative arrangement and effect aconsiderable exchange of information.Indeed, when the Center was firstorganized, MUFON was the only majorUFO Investigative Organization thatexpressed a willingness to entertainsuch a cooperative plan proposed bythe Center. We hope it will continueand prosper."

In addition to the first appearanceof Richard H. Hall and Leonard H.Stringfield on a MUFON Symposiumplatform, our vast audience had thedistinct opportunity to hear and meetMajor Donald E. Keyhoe as thefeatured speaker on Saturdayafternoon. Major Keyhoe selected asubject that was a follow-up to severalbooks that he has written during thepast 25 years. Titled, "Behind the UFOSecrecy," a sub-title could have been"The UFO Cover-up — the greatestdeception in the history of the UnitedStates." The Major then proceeded torelate a series of actual cases tostubstantiate his statement, startingfrom his early involvement in the studyof current events. As most of ourJournal readers know, Major Keyhoewas the Director of NICAP (National

Investigations Committee on AerialPhenomena) during the period when itwas the largest such organization in theworld and now serves on its Board ofGovernors. His Assistant Director atthat time was Richard H. Hall.

In his concluding remarks, DonKeyhoe brought us up to date with thecurrent status of UFO research andmade some pertinent recommend-ations for the near future. He said —"The pressure to end censorship israpidly increasing. In October of 1978,the United Nations representatives willvote on the suggestion of internationalUFO investigations. Also in October,Caltech's Jet Propulsion Laboratoryscientists and engineers will begin animpressive program to detect radiosignals from intelligent beings in space.A lawsuit has been filed against the CIA,under the Freedom of Information Act,to force the complete release of all UFOinformation in the CIA's possession.Behind the scenes, there are strongefforts to create an official program toattempt communication with UFOaliens and learn the purposes of thelong surveillance and to take stepstoward peaceful contacts if there is noserious physical bar."

The Specialization Workshopsand Moderators for the Saturdayafternoon session were: (1) "FieldInvestigative Techniques" by JoeSantangelo, Waltham, Mass., MUFONState Director; (2) "The HumanoidCatalog" by Ted Bloecher, New York,N.Y.; (3) "UFO Reports from Africa" byMrs. Cynthia Hind, Salisbury,Rhodesia, MUFON Representative forRhodesia; (4) "UFO .PhotographicAnalysis" by Bruce Maccabee, Ph. D.,Silver Springs, Md., Consultant andState Director, and (5) ConsultantsConference by Williard P. Armstrong,Ph.D., Consultant and State Directorfor Missouri.

On Sunday morning the AnnualMUFON Corporate Meeting was held. This was reviewed briefly in theDirector's Message in the June issue ofthe Journal. A double feature markedthe Sunday afternoon session, whenMrs. Jennie Zeldman of Columbus,Ohio, and Walt Andrus, InternationalDirector presented a combinationslide/lecture titled "Revisiting the Major

ARE WE ALONE IN THE UNIVERSE?By Vladimir G. Azhazha

(Note: This synopsis of a press conference held atthe USSR Academy of Sciences on November 24,1977, was submitted to James M. McCampbell,MUFON Director of Research, by Valerii I.Sanarov. Mr. Campbell arranged for itstranslation. Sanarov, who lives in the Siberianscience city of Novosibirsk, has recently joinedMUFON as a Consultant in Cultural Exchanges. The speaker, Azhazha, is identified as aresearcher at the USSR Academy of SciencesSubmarine Research Center. His audienceconsisted of employees of the NOVOSTI PressAgency. McCampbell points out that althoughsome distortions or errors may be seen^inaccounts of American sightings, this is less likelyfor the Russian reports made in the nativelanguages. He notes that the article provides"new perspectives and details regarding the UFOproblem in Russia.. .(and contains) several pointsof special significance." Some of the statementsmade are highly important, if authentic, in relationto high-level knowledge of UFOs by Russia andthe United States.-Editor)

I am a representative of theunofficial point of view. Over the years,I have directed the subject area of"UFO Phenomena in the Hydro-

sphere" at the USSR Academy ofSciences. Therefore, I had to becomeacquainted with the entire problem as awhole at the same time. Today I will talkabout the facts and their distortions, the hypotheses, explanations for thephenomena, the . philosophicalproblems which have arisen due tothese explanations and differentevidence, specifically the testimony ofthe American astronauts who were onthe Moon.

I will begin with the fact that UFOsare an objective reality which is presentin our feelings and sensations. Thereare millions of people who have seenUFOs; there are photographs andfilmstrips of unidentified flying objects.Through physical fields, UFOs have adirect effect on terrestrial equipmentand living things. Short, accidentalcontacts have already taken placebetween UFO pilots and people onearth.

Walt covered Delphos,Kan., Pascagoula, Miss., San Antonio,Texas, Eastern Air Lines and BraniffInternational, Travis Walton Case, andthe Stanford, N;Y., abduction of threewomen. Mrs. Zeidman related thedetailed work that she has done in theLawrence Coyne helicopter case andthe testimony of ground witnesses tothe event.

Accolades must be given to all ofthe members of the host organization,The Ohio UFO Investigators League, who did a fantastic job with the facilities, ticket sales, publici ty, hotelaccomodations, displays, and visualaids. Key personnel from the Dayton,Springfield, Fairfield, Cincinnati, andCleveland areas were all involved. Theleadership was spearhaded by Charlesand Geri Wilhelm, Richard Hoffman,

George Pelizzari, Leonard Stringfield,Jack Rockel, and Earl Neff, just tomention a few. Richard Hoffman wasthe master of ceremonies, GeriWilhelm handled public relations,George Pelizzari was the treasurer, with Charles J. Wilhelm, ExecutiveDirector of OUFOIL, coordinating theplanning and execution behind thescenes. Earl Neff and LeonardStringfield did a tremendous job onradio and TV in publicizing thesymposium. Larry Moyers, StateDirector for Ohio, moderated thequestion and answer period followingDr. Hynek's speech Saturday nightwhen all of the speakers made up thepanel. Larry should be very proud ofthe second MUFON Symposium to beheld in his state. Only Illinois andMissouri can make that claim to date, however, California is scheduled for1979 and 1981.

On 21 September 1976, TASSbroadcast from Iran that, on 18September, two aircraft of the IranianAir Force detected a "flying saucer" notfar from Tehran, and taking it for a newaircraft design belonging to a foreignpower, they gave chase. The "saucer"left them but returned later; to thesouth of Tehran, near the outskirts ofthe city, an object about 4^ meters indiameter separated from it. and landedon the ground. Two pilots, in tight-fitting, aluminum-colored spacesuitscame out of it. They were 2.5 meterstall. After looking the area over, theyentered the small "saucer" (its weightwas subsequently determined to be 5tons based on the landing gearimprints) and flew off.

THE DAYTON SYMPOSIUM: SOME IMPRESSIONS(By Richard Hall)

For me it was an opportunity to seeand talk with old friends and colleaguesfrom all parts of the country, some notseen for 10 years or more. The distancefactor had prevented more frequent gettogethers. The formal talks andworkshops, interesting as they were, were not the whole story. As in mostconventions, a .lot of valuableinformation exchange took place inprivate, informal, smaller.gatherings.

Particularly impressive was theclosed MUFON corporate meeting onSunday, during which State Directors,State Section Directors, and othersgave brief reports, asked questions, aired grievances, and offeredsuggestions. The journal was one ofnumerous topics discussed. I receivedseveral very helpful suggestions andalso practical offers of help, which willbe reflected in upcoming issues.

It was delightful to see Idabel andMarilyn Epperson again, from LosAngeles, and to confer for hours withthem — covering UFO investigationfrom A to Z. Isabel Davis, fromWashington, D.C., had been in touchwith the Epperson's for 22 years andhad never met them face-to-face untilDayton. Similarly, through my years ofassociation with MUFON I had not metWalt Andrus face-to-face until thisconference.

Other confabs were held with PaulCerny, from the San Francisco Bayarea (not seen for about 10 years); TedBloecher and a large delegation fromNew York State; Rich Heiden fromWisconsin; and numerous others fromthe Midwest and South. Out of theseconversations came a number ofcooperative projects on importantmatters affecting all of UFO research.

The following items also stand outin my memory:

*The fine job done by the hostgroup, OUFOIL, turning out 700-800

people per session; Rich Huffman'sexpert work as MC; the exhibits, displays, arid general public relationswork accomplished by dedicatedOUFOIL members in cooperation withother area groups

*Len Stringfield fending off hostilequestions at a press conferencecentered around the question of"humanoid retrievals," and maintaininghis composure in an atmospheresometimes bordering on thethreatening, laying out the evidenceabout "crashed saucers" and humanoidbodies for UFO researchers to try toverify or refute for once and for all

*Jenny Zeidman's excellent verbalreport on the 1973 Ohio, helicoptercase, based on a report soon to bepublished by the Center for UFOStudies, establishing the case as astrong one

*The flight from Washington toDayton with Major Donald Keyhoe, talking over old times and future planswith him, joining with him in theEpperson's room to celebrate IsabelDavis' birthday with champagne, seeinghim shake hands with Dr. J. AllenHynek and share the platform on thesame side of the UFO subject, hearingthe well-deserved ovation he receivedwhen introduced to the audience

*The calm efficient, patient effortsof Walt Andrus to keep things on thetrack, threading his way through theinevitable minefield of personalities —individual is ts wi th sometimesconflicting outlooks, supplying the all-important organizational and businesssense necessary for any cooperativeenterprise.

*The presence and participation ofDr. Hynek, Mimi Hynek, .and AllenHendry — all of the Center for UFOStudies — sharing ideas and plans forfuture publications and for a continuedclose working relationship withMUFON

Despite many obstacles, the 1978symposium proceedings werepublished in time to be available atDayton; an attractive, handsomelyprinted volume for a memorableoccasion.

These are but a few of thehighlights for me of a busy weekendwhen I sometimes wished that I couldbe in three places at once, and hadmore time to talk at greater length withthe many other active MUFON peoplewhom I met.

As journal editor, I profited greatlyby attending the symposium and I lookforward to receiving the information, articles, and ideas so generouslyoffered by so many. All this should helpto make the journal even morecomplete and informative.

RETRIEVALS OF THE THIRD KINDBy Leonard H. Stringfield

(Copyright 1978,. Leonard H. Stringfield)

Len Stringfield, author of Situation Red. TheUFO Siege, is a Board Member of MUFON andalso associated with the Center for UFOStudies. He has a long background in UFOresearch, once (1953-1957) screening andreporting UFO activity in Ohio for the U.S. AirForce Air Defense Command. He is Director ofPublic Relations and Marketing Services ofDuBois Chemicals, Cincinnati, Ohio.

A Case Study of Alleged UFOs andOccupants in Military Custody.1

Since the advent of the UFO, dating back toWorld War II when there was official recognitionof the "foo fighter," one hard fact stands out: theworld public at large still disbelieves in itsexistence. Another fact: most of our world'sscientific community does not believe in UFOseither, although a small number of its Fellowshiptoduy will admit their puzzlement and sometimescuriosity over the persistence of UFO reports.

For those of us dedicated to serious UFOresearch, working in all professional levels, thereis no doubt that a real interloper from somewhereexists! Knowing this is frustrating. Today, after 3.1years of prodigious effort, our research has failedto discover, or uncover, the real UFO's nature, itsorigin or intent — and I hasten to add, to forceopen the door of alleged official secrecy behindwhich may be concealed the hard evidence, or, ifyou will, the extraordinary and sobering proof wehave all sought,

Today, considering the long, evasive historyof the UFO and an equally evasive officialposture, our research stands at a criticalcrossroad. Here we find a two-way split off, agrowing and sharpening divergence of opinionabout the nature and origin of the UFO.

One view entertains the notion that the UFOis a paraphysical or physical visitant from anotherrealm or of another dimension and that all theparanormal evidence reportedly associated withthe UFO precludes a simple "nut and bolt"physical explanation. This hypothesis, in the viewof some researchers, rules out the interplanetary"nut and bolt" spaceship. The other majorhypothesis, and now considered a conservativeview, postulates that the .UFO is a structuredmachine and comes from across the vast reaches

FOOTNOTE1. As presented at the MUFON Symposium, Dayton,Ohio, July 29,1978. Revised from version that appears inthe symposium proceedings.

8

of space and time from another solar system. Thisbelief maintains that the extraterrestrial race has,by virtue of its advanced technology, overcomethe problem of spatial distance and has developedgreat psychical powers by which it canmanipulate man's mind when it sees fit to do so.Thus, in this postulation, the reportedparanormal events can also be explained.

Of course, there are many other provocativesplinter theories, some interlacing the two majorhypotheses and some radically disregarding theknown facts. Theories are free, and a dime adozen.

In its honest endeavor to proceed downeither hypothetical path, research todaycontinues to investigate UFO reports, correlateand compute the reported data, computerizephotographs, conduct conferences andsymposia, and drudge over 13,000 UFO reportsreleased by the Air Force's former Project BlueBook which have been made available for publicstudy at the National Archives in Washington,D.C. Therefore, it is not by accident that UFOresearchers have provided for their brethren aconvenient language by which to describe eventsand, more specifically, a terminology so that UFOreports can be classified.

Speaking of terminology, we borrow a pagefrom the eminent Dr. J. Allen Hynek's book, TheUFO Experience, A Scientific Inquiry. From thismajor work, we now have Close Encounters ofthe First, Second, and Third Kind, which arelabels covering a hypothetical set of conditionswherein the human witness observes orexperiences a UFO at close range. These includephysical or electromagnetic effects to a witness orhis surroundings or, an encounter with a strangealien being.

Popularized by the movie of the same name,Close Encounters of the Third Kind, has becomea household term. Now anybody and everybodycan share in an awareness of these rare andbizarre events. But there is another event of theAlien Third Kind. This is an event known mainlythrough rumor. Even knowledgeable researchersadmit they know of it only from shadowy sources, and when pursued, found sudden dead ends.

Through patience, perserverence andcareful, courteous diplomacy, I have wended myway through the many shadowy mazes andfound, to my suprisc, sources of light at many ofthe so-called dead ends. What I have learned fromthese sources describes an event which I shallcall, Retrievals of The Third Kind. Retrievals ofThe Third Kind, of course, relate primarily to thealien being. To be more precise, I refer toincidents where a UFO had alledgedly crashedand both it and the occupants were retrived bymilitary personnel who were dispatched to the

scene. According to my sources, theseimmobilized craft and deceased occupants, described as humanoid, have been placed incustody at certain military installations wherethey were studied under the highest securitymeasures. Now, for the first time, sufficient datahave been amassed to lend support to some of theold retrieval claims. But, looking back to the1950"s, there was little or no desire then to pursuethe reported claims. At that time activeresearchers, including myself, did little more thanscoff. We thought we had good reason.

The cause of this "scoffing" was one grandhoax. Here, I refer to a book. Behind the FlyingSaucers by the late Frank Scully, published in1950. Briefly, it told about a reported saucer crashin Aztec, New Mexico, in 1948. Scully went on torelate that a scientist he had met had possessionof metal artifacts taken from inside the craft, which was proof that the saucer was from outerspace. Investigation, however, revealed Scully'sscientist was a fraud. With the book's subsequent

, exposure as a hoax, which got a lot of publicity, itbecame unfashionable for any , objectiveresearcher to write or talk about crashed UFOsand their alleged "little men". Adding fuel to thefire of a condemned book were strong Air Forcedenials in 1954 that a retrieved .UFO was in hidingat Wright-Patterson AFB. I remember calling Lt.Colonel John O'Mara, Chief of Intelligence, at theair base, inquiring about the alleged retrievals. Hisreply, in part, "Ridiculous!"

So completely was Scully's retrieval storyput down that some researchers today wonder, inretrospect, if the book and/or its exposure werecontrived But, despite denials and the suspicionsof research, the crash and retrieval storiespersisted. Then, like a bolt from the blue, whilepreparing the manuscript for my book SituationRed, The UFO Siege, to be published byDoubleday, some new reliable souces opened up.Then, once again to my surprise, after the releaseof my book in 1977, still more sources surfaced totalk about what they knew. Then one by one thejigsaw pieces began to fit together and a pictureemerged.

Now I believe this is the time and certainlythe place — Dayton, Ohio, and so close toWright-Patterson AFB — that we must face thisgreatest of issues head-on. We must now take anew and honest look at the old rumors. And, wemust also take a new look at the possibility of agrand official cover-up and why. If any one of theretrieval incidents is true, or if only one of myinformants is tell the truth, then humankind is infor a shock. The impact of its sudden revelation— or forced admission — through officialpronouncement probably would shake up man'slifestyle, his philosophies, and even his economy.

Page 9: Mufon ufo journal 1978 7. july

And, if it is true that alien humanoids have beenretrieved and are held in a preserved state at oneor more military installations, then ourgovernment, and all consorting governments, responsible for this concealment will have toexplain their policy of prolonged secrecy. We maythen rightly ask what else is hidden about theUFO of a more frightening nature?

P r o b a b l y f o l l o w i n g a n y o f f i c i a lpronouncement of this magnitude, there would

.be strong public reaction. There would bedemands for more hidden facts, and as always, some one, or some agency, would have to bepinned with the blame. Certainly at the top of thelist would be the military establishment, and othercovert intelligence agencies. Also to blame wouldbe the media. Where was their prowess to probefor the truth? It seems strange that some of itsaudacious members who helped bring down aPresident failed to reach the right people with theright UFO facts — or, where they too, in certainkey areas, a part of the big cover-up?

And UFO research, too, can share in someof the blame. Too much disunity among the majorresearch groups is one factor. Perhaps a moreconcerted action would have carried more weightat critical moments when pressures were put tobear in areas of known cover-up. Also, perhaps, too much time has been spent by influentialresearchers looking for a paranormal answer forthe UFO. One fact has stood out for years. Theaverage reported UFO appears to be metallic, structured craft with windows, and, when in alanding position, sometimes uses tripods. Whilethis general description may apply to a vehiclefrom any other mysterious realm, it does suggestthat the design is more a feat of engineering thanof psychical or spiritual manifestation.

And now for an academic thought. Is it rightor wise for research —'or, myself — to try and pryopen the lid of a possible Pandora's Box? Is it notmorally right to know about the crashed UFO andits alien occupants? Is there something sinisterabout the continuing surveillance of Earth? Andwhat, you may ask, is my own opinion of myinformants endowed with such powerfultestimony? Frankly, I cannot refute the credibilityof any of my informants. They are from scatteredareas, many of whom I have pursued with greateffort. Knowing something about the character ofeach suggests that none is hoaxing, and, it isdifficult to believe that any one of them was a"plant," and, even if one or two were, what aboutthe others? And, I may ask, why plant the kind ofinformation that could work against the officialposition which is to play down the notion ofsecrecy about UFOs?

It is with equal candor that I must state that Iam not in a Providential position to pass a positiveor final judgment on the retrievals stories or onmy informants. On this tenuous ground I mustallow for some marginal error in observation ortiny flaw in human judgment for each reportedaccount. However, let me quote an old adage."Wherever there is smoke there is fire," and frommy position I certainly can see a helluva lot ofsmoke!

Now, let me switch from my beliefs to yoursand consider' what you may think about merelative to my expose. To help quide yourappraisal, allow me to state that I personally have

not seen a retrieved UFO, parts of one, or itsoccupants. Also, for the recor'd, Ido not possess asingle affidavit to prove that any one of myinformants has seen a retrieved craft or itsoccupants. I have only their names and theirtestimony. Unfortunately, I cannot use thesenames. Anonymity has been requested and willbe respected. The reasons should be obvious toall. In essence, therefore, the cases I present inthis paper without names to back up theinformant's testimony can be construed ashearsay. If perchance, hearsay is to be myundoing, then I must make my stand on the meritsof my own credibility which I trust has alreadybeen established in my 29 years of UFO research. You are the judge and the jury. I will now proceedwith the testimony of my informants concerningRetrievals of the Third Kind in the followingabstracts.

Abstract IIn 1948, according to reports from hazy

sources, a UFO with occupants numberinganywhere from one to sixteen,.had crashed in adesert region of the southwestern United Statesor Mexico and was retrieved by U.S. militaryauthorities. But the reports never got beyondrumor because 1948- was the year when FrankScully's book unloaded an alleged hoax on thepublic about a crashed UFO in Aztec, NewMexico.

In the Fall of 1977 new word of a 1948 crashcame to me from a well-informed military source. His information, however, was scanty. He hadheard from other "inside" military sources that ametallic disc had crashed somewhere in a desertregion. His only details indicated that the crafthad suffered severe damage on impact and wasretrieved by military units.

By coincidence, months later in 1977,1 wasto learn more about a crashed disc occurring in1948. This came from researcher Todd Zechel, whom I had known since 1975 when he becameResearch Director of Ground Saucer Watch.Formerly with the National Security Agency,Zechel stated that an Air Force technician toldhim that his uncle, then a Provost Marshal atCarswell Air Force Base near Ft. Worth, Texas, had taken part in the recovery of the crashed

. UFO which was described as a metallic disc, 90feet in diameter. The crash occurred about 30miles inside the Mexican border across fromLaredo, Texas, and was recovered by U .S. troopsafter it was tracked on radar screens. The jobassigned the Provost Marshal, now a retiredcolonel, was to cordon off the crash site.

The retired colonel, now living in Florida, wastracked down by Zechel. Among other factsrevealed by the colonel was that one dead alienwas found aboard the craft and was described asabout 4 feet, 6 inches tall, completely hairless'withhands that had no thumbs. Zechel learned fromhis source that the troops involved in the retrievalwere warned that if they said a word about theincident they would be the "sorriest peoplearound".

Continuing his investigation, Zechel piecedtogether other eyewitnesses to the 1948 crashevent. In his statement, Zechel relates thefollowing: "I traced another Air Force colonel, now retired in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He had

seen the UFO in flight. He was flying an F-94fighter out of Dias Air Force base in Texas andwas over Albuquerque, New Mexico, whenreports came of a UFO on the West Coast, flyingover Washington State. Radars clocked itsspeed at 2,000 miles per hour. It made a 90-degreeturn and flew east, over Texas. The colonel, thena captain pilot, actually saw it as it passed. Thensuddenly it disappeared from radar screens. AtDias base, the radar operators plotted its course, and decided it had crashed some 30 miles acrossthe Mexican border from Laredo. When thecaptain got back to base, he and a fellow pilot gotinto a small plane and took off over the borderafter the UFO. When they landed in the desert atthe crash site, U.S. troops were there beforethem. The craft was covered with a canopy, andthe two pilots were not allowed to see it. Theywere then called to Washington, D.C., fordebriefing and sworn to secrecy about the wholeevent."

Zechel also traced a U.S. naval intelligenceofficer who was in Mexico City at the time of thecrash. He was rushed to the spot, but got therejust as the craft was being loaded onto militarytrucks. (

Comment: Todd Zechel related to me byphone March 15, 1978, that additional detailspertinent to this 1948 incident will be made knownin his forthcoming book, Under IntelligenceControl, to be published in 1978. Zechel alsorelates that he has a signed affidavit by the retiredAir Force Colonel who was involved in thecordoning off operations.

Abstract II1952, the year of the great wave of UFO

sightings throughout the U.S.A., can also share inthe history of retrieval data. My information forone known UFO crash incident in 1952 comesfrom a reliable person in a technical position at alarge General Electric plant. His brother, whowishes to be unnamed, was on duty as a radarspecialist at Edwards Air Force Base, California,in 1952, when he saw a UFO descending towardEarth at great speed across his radar screen. When the UFO had been confirmed to havecrashed, the Captain on duty gave himinstructions: "You didn't see anything!" Thespecialist a short time later learned from baseofficials that an unidentified craft did crash in anearby remote desert area. The retrieved craftwas more than 50 feet in diameter with a row ofwindows around its equator. Its metallic surfacewas in a burned-blackened condition. He also hadheard that the craft was occupied by deadhumanoid bodies approximately 4% feet tall. Also, the specialist recalls that he heard reports that thedamaged craft was held temporarily in a hanger atEdwards Air Force Base before it was shipped bytruck to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

Commenf: I had asked my informant if Icould discuss this incident with his brother, butwhen he checked by phone he was reminded thatthe incident was classified as Secret and he couldnot be in a position to disclose further details. In

(Retrievals, continued)possible conjunction with this 1952 event, I havetalked with two sources who had witnessed alarge military vehicle or lo-boy drag (flat-bedtruck-Editor), with suspicious cargo undertarpaulin, destined for Wright-Patterson AirForce Base. One observer was quartermaster atGodman Field, Kentucky, when the lo-boy, underheavy guard at night, made a transient stop there.Word on the base was that its hidden cargo was acrashed UFO. Another witness, who .hadobserved a strange cargo being transported on alo-boy into Wright-Patterson AFB in 1952 were aman and wife, then residing in Circleville, Ohio.By telephone in 1952, they claimed while drivingtheir car near the base that traffic was stalled.Escorting the vehicle, they said, was a motorcade .of military police.

Abstract IDAdditional testimony in support of a crashed

UFO incident in 1952 comes from anunquestionable source: John Schuessler, DeputyDirector of MUFON, and engineer for McDonnellDouglas at NASA; his data comes from his fatherand stepmother, who, equally unquestionable, secured their data in 1968 from an unquestionablefirst-hand source, who was'their neighbor in asmall town in Pennsylvania.

According to John Schuessler, his family'sclose friend was formerly a civilian guard servingat a receiving gate for internal security at Wright-Patterson AFB. While on duty, sometime in 1952,he witnessed a tractor with lo-boy hauling atarpaulin-covered craft into a tight security areaat the base. The guard also had told theSchuessler's that he witnessed at the receivinggate the deceased bodies recovered from thecrashed UFO at a site vaguely referred to assomewhere in. the U.S. Southwest. The guarddescribed the bodies, packed in crates, as being"little people" or humanoid. It is not knownwhether or not the bodies arrived at the sametime at the base as the craft on the lo-boy or atanother time by other means. One point he didmake clear about the area in which he worked tothe Schuessler's, "Everything delivered had topass by me:"

John Schuessler said he tried to folbw up toget more information by arranging a meeting withthe former guard through the influence of hisparents. But, his efforts were futile. Said John,"He refused to talk about it, even to me."

Comment: The brief testimony of theSecurity Guard at Wright-Patterson AFB andthat of the radar specialist at Edwards AFB (citedin Abstract II) suggest that the official cover-up ofvital UFO data is so great that some of it whichroncems the captive craft and occupants is undera special system of files — and has always beenindependent of those maintained by Project BlueBook, and, perhaps are without classification sothat even the Freedom of Information Act cannotreach them. Probably the area in which theSecurity Guard had served his tenure of dutyfrom the late 1940's to the mid-1950's, was thesame as that referred to by Senator BarryGoldwater in his letter to me dated December 3,1974, in which he stated....'! made an effort to get

in the room at Wright-Patterson where theinformation was stored, and I was denied thatrequest...."

Abstract VMr. T., who holds a high technical position in

civilian life today, was in the Spring of 1953, at theage of 20, a radar specialist with Secret securityclearance. While stationed in Ft. Monmouth,New Jersey, in 1953, he and a small, selectnumber of radar specialists were summoned toview a special film at the base theater. Withoutany briefing, the 16-mm movie projector wasflicked on, and the film began to roll on the screen, showing the usual flaws and scratches found incombat photography film. Suddenly, without anytitles or credits, or music, there appeared a desertscene dominated by a silver disc-shaped objectimbedded in the sand with a domed section at thetop. At the bottom was a hatch or door that wasopen.

In.the next scene, Mr. T. recalls seeing 10 to15 military personnel all dressed in fatigues and allwithout identification patches, standing aroundwhat appeared to be the disabled craft. By judgingtheir height against the UFO, T. determined thatits width was approximately 15 to 20 feet. indiameter and that an open hatch or door at thebottom was about 2% feet wide and perhaps 3 feethigh. At this point Mr. T. had no idea of themovie's purpose. I asked about the activity of thepersonnel. "They were just looking at the object,"he said.

Then the movie switched to what appearedto be the interior of the craft. A panel with a fewsimple levers was shown, and he remembersbeing impressed by the muted pastel colors andsudden glares of white — the sign of poorphotography. Again there was a change ofscenes. Now in view were two tables, probablytaken inside a tent, on which, to his surprise, weredead bodies. Two were on one table, and one onanother. Mr. T. said the bodies appeared little byhuman standards and most notable were theheads, all looking alike, and all being largecompared to their body sizes. .They lookedmongoloid, he thought, with small noses, mouths, and eyes that were shut. He didn't recall seeingears or hair. The skin, he said, was leathery andashen in color. Each wore a tight-fitting suit in apastel cobr.

The sight of the dead bodies was the end ofthe movie. As most military movies credit theSignal Corp or some other source, this one"stopped cold," said Mr. T. When the lights cameon in the theater, the officer in charge stood upand instructed the viewers to "think about themovie," and added firmly, "Don't relate itscontents to anyone." Mr. T. said that in goodfaith, he didn't even tell his wife who lived near thebase. ToMr.T.'ssurprise.twoweekslaterhewasapproached by an Intelligence Officer on the baseand told, "Forget the movie you saw; it was ahoax." Shortly after seeing the movie he heardfrom a couple of top security officers on the basethat a UFO had crashed in New Mexico and hadbeen recovered with its occupants. The date ofthe crash was 1952, said Mr. T. Commented my

informant, "The 5-minute long movie certainlywas not a Walt Disney production. It wasprobably shot by an inexperienced cameramanbecause it was full of scratches, and poor coloringand texture."

Mr. T., when asked about his interest inUFOs, claimed that he was not — then or now —interested, but he has always been curious about

'the purpose of the film in relation to his work inradar. Years later, he met an old armyacquaintance who also was a radar specialist. ToTs surprise, he learned from this man that he,too, had seen the same film at another base underthe same similar hush-hush conditions.

Comment: Considering the credibility statusof my informant, I believe he saw the movie anddescribes the subject matter to the best of hisrecollection. Regarding the subject matter, hebelieves that the crashed craft and the deadbodies were bona fide. It would have beendifficult, even by a major Hollywood studio, tohave made dummy bodies look so real for use inan otherwise so make-shift film. And for whatmorbid purpose?

Abstract VIResearch Director for MUFON, Raymond E.

Fowler of Wenham, Massachusetts, watchedincredulously as Fritz Werner signed thefollowing affidavit, dated June 7, 1973:

/, Fn'fz Werner, do solemnly swear thatduring a special assignment with the U.S.Air Force on May 21,1953,1 assisted in theinvestigation of a crashed unknown objectin the vicinity of Kingman, Arizona. The object was constructed of anunfamiliar metal which resembledaluminum. It had impacted 20 inches intothe sand without .any sign of structuraldamage. It was oval and about 30 feet indiameter. An entranceway hatch had beenvertically lowered and opened. It wasabout S'/ifeet high and l'/2 feet wide. I wasable to talk briefly with someone on theteam who did look inside only briefly. Hesaw two swivel seats, an oval cabin, and alot of instruments and displays. A tentpitched near the object sheltered the deadremains of the only occupant of the craft. Itwas about 4 feet tall, dark browncomplexion and had 2 eyes, 2 nostrils, 2ears, and a small round mouth. It wasclothed in a silvery, metallic suit and wore askull cap of the same type of material. Itwore no face covering or helmet. I certifythat the above statement is true by affixingmy signature to this document this 7th dayof June, 1973.

According to Ray Fowler, a researcher ofhighest credentials, here is Werner's story:

/ was project engineer on an Air Forcecontract with the Atomic EnergyCommission from "Operation Upshot-Knothole" at the atomic proving ground,Nevada. My job involved the measuring ofblast effects on various types of buildings

10

especially erected for the tests. On May 20,'1953, I worked most of the day atFrenchman Flat. In the evening, I receiveda phone call from the, test director, Dr. EdDoll, informing me that I was to go on aspecial job the next day. On the followingday, I reported for special duty and wasdriven, to Indian Springs Air Force Base, near the proving ground, where I joinedabout 15 other specialists. We were told toleave all valuables in the custody of themilitary police. We were then put on amilitary plane and flown to Phoenix,Arizona. We were not allowed tofraternize. There, we were put on a buswith other personnel, who were alreadythere. The bus windows were blacked outso that we couldn't see where we weregoing. We rode for an estimated four hours.I think we were in the area of Kingman,Arizona, which is northwest of Phoenixand not too far from the atomic provingground in Nevada. During the bus trip, wewere told by an Air Force full colonel that asuper-secret Air Force vehicle had crashedand that, since we were all specialists incertain fields, we were to investigate thecrash in terms of our own specialty andnothing more.

Finally, the bus stopped and wedisembarked one at a time as our nameswere called and were escorted by militarypolice to the area that we were to inspect. Two spotlights, were centered on thecrashed object, which was ringed withguards. The lights were so bright that it wasimpossible to see the surrounding area. The object was oval and looked like-twodeep saucers, one inverted upon the other. It was about 30 feet in diameter, withconvex surfaces, top and bottom. Thesesurfaces were about 20 feet in diameter. Itwas constructed of a dull silver metal, likebrushed aluminum. The metal was darkerwhere the saucer "lips" formed a rim, around which were what looked like"slots". A curved open hatch -door waslocated on the leading end and wasvertically lowered. There was a lightcoming from inside but it could have beeninstalled by the Air Force. My particular jobwas to determine, from the angle and depthof impact into the sand, how fast thevehicle's foward and vertical velocitieswere at the time of impact. The impact hadforced the vehicle approximately 20 inchesinto the sand. There was no landing gear.

• There'were also no marks or dents, that Ican remember, on the surface — not evenscratches. Questions having nothing to dowith our own special areas were notanswered.

An armed military policeman guarded 'atent pitched nearby. I managed to glanceinside at one point and saw the dead bodyof a four-foot, human-like creature in asilver metallic-looking suit. The skin on itsface was dark brown. This may have beencaused by exposure to our atmosphere.

The face was not covered but it had ametallic skull-cap device on its head. Assoon as each person finished his task, hewas interviewed over a tape recorder andescorted back to the bus. On the way backto the bus, I managed to talk briefly withsomeone else going back to it at the sametime. He told me that he had glanced insidethe object and saw two swivel-like seats, aswell as instruments and displays. Anairman who noticed we were talkingseparated us and warned us not to talkwith each other.

After we all returned to the bus, the AirForce colonel who was in charge had usraise our right hands and take an oath notto reveal what we had experienced. I was

• instructed to write my report in longhandand not to type or reproduce it. A telephonenumber was given me to call when thereport was complete. I called the numberand an airman picked up the report.

Ray Fowler states that Werner held severalengineering and management positions atWright-Patterson AFB between June 1949, andJanuary 1960. During that period, he worked inthe Office of Special Studies of what was then theAir Material Command Installations Division.Later, he designed aircraft landing gear andbecame Chief of alighting devices within theAircraft Laboratory at Wright Air DevelopmentCenter. At the time of the alleged incident, he wason assignment to the Atomic Energy Commissionat the Atomic Proving Ground in Nevada. Fowleralso states that Werner told him that hesympathized with the Air Force's secret handlingof the UFO problem and added that the Air Forcedid not know where UFOs originated. Werneralso said that the Air Force believed that theUFOs were interplanetary vehicles but that theydid not know how to handle the situation. Theydid not want to create panic.

Comments Fowler : There wereinconsistencies in Werner's story, but mostappeared to be in the realm of memory lapses andexaggerations by the witness. Former employeesthat were checked held him in high esteem and alldescribed run as a highly competent and moralindividual. Having published a number oftechnical papers, Werner also holds membershipin the American Association for theAdvancement of Science.

In Fowler's continuing evaluation he citesone piece of evidence which seems to give astrong element of truth to Werner's account. Inan attempt to pin down the exact date of thealleged incident, Werner agreed to show his diaryhe kept in those days. On its aging pages, on May20, 1953, it read in part: "Well, pen's out of ink.Spent most of day on Frenchman's Flat surveyingcubicles and supervising welding of a plate girderbridge sensor which cracked after last shot...Gotfunny call from Dr. Doll at 1000. I'm going on aspecial job tomorrow." On May 21st, the 'diaryread: "Up at 7:00. Worked most of day onFrenchman with cubicles. Letter from Bet. She'sfeeling better now — thank goodness. Got pickedup at Indian Springs AFB at 4:30 p.m-. for a job Ican't write or talk about."

Commenf: In my book Situation Red, I coverthe Werner story in full based on myconversations with Ray Fowler. Said Fowler,"With more substantiation, it could blow the lidoff secrecy." I agree. One. final note: the nameFritz Werner is fictitious, but I feel that his storyalthough embellished, is basically true. OneIntelligence source commented, "A lot of it isstory."

Abstract VIIFinally a name of a witness surfaces — an Air

Force Major, named Daly — who was ametallurgist stationed at Wright-Patterson AFB in1953 to relate his adventures with a crashed UFO.The source for this information is fellowCincinnati-based researcher, Charles Wilhelm. Afriend of Charles' father, he related in 1968 that inApril of 1953 he was flown to a destinationunknown, where it was hot and sandy, to examinethe crashed UFO. He was blindfolded and drivento a point about 30 minutes away from a base ofoperations. There, inside of a tent, standing in softsand, his blindfold was removed. From there hewas taken to a location where he saw a silverymetallic craft about 25 to 30 feet in diameter. Theexterior of the craft, he said, was not damaged, however, his on-the:spot two-day analysis of theship's metal, using the equipment he carried withhim, showed that it was not native to Earth. MajorDaly, although he was not permitted to enter thecraft, observed that the craft's entrancemeasured 4 to 5 feet high and 2 to 3 feet wide.

Commenf: Major Daly's blindfolded trip tothe crash site, similar to that of Fritz Werner's,indicates that it was common procedure for themilitary to use extreme security measures relativeto UFO retrievals. It is to be noted that MajorDaly's experience takes place in April, a monthshy of Fritz Werner's which was in May of thesame year. Also, to be noted is that Daly did notsee any dead alien bodies. Maybe they hadalready been removed, or, if the craft was foundundamaged, as he attested, it is possible theoccupants managed to evade capture. Or,perhaps there were two crashes in a desert area inthe Spring of 1953. If, however, both the reportsof Werner. and Daly are describing the samecrashed UFO event, it is possible that Daly usedthe wrong month.

NATO Report:UFO Destroys Missiles

The following incident is describedin a 25 October 1976 NATO document.During the Middle East conflict, a large"flying saucer" appeared over one ofthe military bases of the Atlantic Bloc.Surface-to-air missiles opened fire on it.It was as if the missiles hit a barrierbefore reaching the UFO; they weredestroyed by a beam similar to a laser.beam. A similar incident is cited in thebook by the American scholarMcCampbell who is studying the UFOproblem. During the Vietnam War, aUFO hovered over Hanoi and was firedupon by Vietnamese anti-aircraftgunners who took this craft for a newAmerican aircraft design.

A UFO incident in the AtlanticOcean is on record. The USS Wosk(sic, probably Wasp) was sailing at thehead of 12 ships. Its instrumentssuddenly detected an underwaterobject which was travelling at a speed of150 knots. This object accompanied thegroup of ships for a rather long time inthe area of the Atlantic Basin and it wasnoted on the instruments when it beganto dive, up to 6,000 meters below thesurface.

In October 1976 an article on thesighting of an underwater UFO fromthe Soviet research ship VladimirVorob'yeu, "The Eight MysteriousRays," was carried in NEDELYAsupplement No. 43 to IZVESTIYA. Abright, white spot was circling the shipin a counterclockwise direction at aradius of 150-200 meters; it broke upinto eight pieces as if from the effect ofthe propeller blades. The sonic depthfinder fixed it at a depth of 170 meterswhile at the same time showing thepresence of some sort of object underthe keel at a depth of approximately 20meters. A number of similar incidentsare summarized in the work "UFOPhenomena in the Hydrosphere" whichI am supervising.

On 27 December, a UFO wassighted near the village of Sosenki-

Vatutinki on the Kaluga Highway. Afiery ball which flew along the highwayfor a distance of 10-15 kilometers wasseen from the vehicles travelling on thehighway. At one point it became darkand, in the middle of the ball, along itscircumference, a number of windows litup. About 600:700 residents of Sosenkiprovided evidence which was similar tothat given by the drivers andpassengers of the vehicles which weretravelling along this section of theKaluga Highway at that time.

Science Academy UFO Report -There is a work published by the

USSR Academy of Sciences for internaluse. This is "UFO Sightings in theUSSR." The first volume encompassesthe period from 1923, including thesightings of N.K. Rerik, and ends in themiddle of the Great Patriotic War.The second volume brings it up .torecent years. On page 98 of volume 2,we read the testimony of ComradeKuprenich regarding two silver-coloredUFOs which hovered over the workersvillage of Usovo, Kuntsevskiy Rayon,Moskovskaya Oblast, near the rail lineon 31 July 1969 (according to other datacited in Zigel's lectures, it was on 31August 1961). Vehicles were sitting infront of the barrier waiting for theelectric train to pass; but, even severalminutes later, after the barrier opened, they were not able to move from thespot — the ignition did not work. Thevehicles were only able to continue ontheir way when the UFOs disappeared. This is the effect UFOs have onterrestrial equipment.

Just recently, during the night of 20September 1977, a UFO was sightedabove Leningradskaya Oblast,Petrozavodsk, and Finland. Thesighting over Petrozavodsk wasreported by IZVESTIYA in its issue forthe provinces on 22 September (TASS)and by SOTSIALISTICHESKAYAINDUSTRIYA on 23 September (aTASS report under the headline "AnUnidentified Natural Phenomenon"). Ican state in more detail that the UFOmade a giant figure eight over Pulkovand left a contrail. Travelling at anenormous speed over LeningradskayaOblast, the UFO stopped overPetrozavodsk where it was observed asa fiery ball; and, while hovering over the

city, it deployed eight "petals" — beamswhich stretched downward. It was afiery "downpour" with a shaft in thecenter. 'This shaft looked like asounding balloon and it flew along LeninAvenue. Before this UFO returned toits Medusa form, many of the residentswoke up experiencing a feeling of fear."We were afraid," said the people whoobserved this phenomenon on thestreet. (This case has been attributed toa Russian rocket launch by JamesOberg.—Editor.)

This object, which also flew overLake Onega, was seen from a ship ofthe Volga-Baltic Line. A smaller objectseparated from the UFO in the area ofthe Lake. The fiery ball was also seenover Helsinki. Rumors spread that theSoviet Union was testing a new weaponover the capitals of the Europeanstates; this led to the usual militaryhysteria in the the U.S. and NATO andto increased discussions about theneed to speed up production of theneutron bomb. In their turn, some ofthe people on our side decided thatwhat had happened over Petrozavodskand Lake Onega was an American testof the neutron bomb and it's deliverysystem. But, of course, it was nothing ofthe, kind. Our military knows how todistinguish UFOs from space vehiclesand aircraft which are launched byearthlings. This is why the military unitsof the border zone did not open fire onthe object which hovered overPetrozavodsk.

For each of us, the chance of anencounter with such a vehicle is exactly0.05 percent throughout our lifetime.During the past 30 years, theAmericans have counted theappearance of 80,000 vehicles abovethe earth. The Swedes have recorded900 UFOs just over Scandanavia. Wehave 1,500 incidents of UFO sightingsover the Soviet Union.

Since wishful thinking is frequentlymistaken for reality and since differentcelestial phenomena can be taken asUFOs, American scientists, forexample, selected 80,000 of the mostreliable and firm evidence from the 15million UFO sightings for the past 30years. In 80 percent of the cases, theUFOs glowed with a bright light. In 20percent of the cases, they had a darkbody with a metallic sheen. As a rule,

12

Page 13: Mufon ufo journal 1978 7. july

the UFOs are wrapped in a fiery plasmacloud. This makes photographydifficult. It has been observed that theyare the color of a welding arc duringrapid flight. At slower speeds, they arelight blue in color, etc. But, it alsohappens that the UFO glows with abright light while hovering over aparticular area.

It is possible that, with theassistance of ions, a breakdown ofelementary particles takes place withinthe plasma cloud and a completevacuum forms in front of the UFO; thisvacuum enables the vehicle to fly atunprecedented speeds. The UFOcreates a vacuum for itself with its owntechnical equipment. The majority ofthe vehicles are shaped like an invertedsaucer of a silvery, aluminum color. The"saucer" has windows and threelanding "legs"; judging from theirimprints, the legs are a simplearrangement, sort of like "skis" whichare let down in the form of a letter "H"with a line through it: three straight"shafts" lengthwise and one across themiddle. Sometimes a UFO will landdirectly on its frame. The upper orlower half of the UFO is frequentlytransparent. As a rule, a green liquid isfound in the imprints left by the UFO onthe ground. Not a single plant will growon this spot. It is possible that the greenliquid protects the UFO from terrestrialbacteria.

Not far from Borisoglebsk, servicemen of the Soviet Army saw aUFO with a semicircular canopy; it wasflying from one side of the highway tothe other. Two figures were visibleunder the transparent canopy; theywere indistinguishable from humanfigures. One of the figures was leaningon his hand — which had five fingers —on the inside of the semicircle.

The journalist Strel'nikovdescribed a UFO sighting atKhantymansiysk in PRAVDIST, a tradenewspaper for the employees ofPRAVDA. The shape of the vehicleresembled a gigantic electric light bulb.

There are different" UFO shapes.Usually they are an inverted saucerwith a flat, rotating body; sometimesthey are a cylinder or a triangle with abody shaped like a lampshade. Thereare different sizes of UFOs. Usually, the body is 30, 40, 50 or 80 meters in

diameter. The powerplant for a vehiclelike this is enormous. Recently, a bodylike this flew alongside the motor shipNikolay Ostrovskiy for a period of 36minutes.

A UFO was seen over Putivl' inSumskaya Oblast. It was a cylinder 300meters in size. The vehicle hoveredover Putivl' twice for 2 to 2% hours eachtime. It deployed 10-12 smaller UFOsfrom the inside. A military unit locatedin this area made the sighting of thisvehicle. This happened this year, in1977. Sailors of the Pacific Ocean Fleetalso made a sighting of a giganticcylinder in another place. Several smallobjects which separated from thecylinder flew .at a distance of 10-12kilometers from the cylinder.

UFO Movies by Apollo Astronauts

The American astronauts whovisited the Moon saw a gigantic cylinder1,500 meters long there. Aldrin shot iton movie f i l m . The vehic leaccomplished its own interaction withApollo; it coordinated its movementwith it.

The UFOs develop a speed from 0to 72,000 kilometers per hour within theearth's atmosphere. They are able toabruptly change their flight orbit and flyin jerks by making zigzag movements, while going from one point to another atremarkable speeds in this fashion. Inmathematics, these movements arecalled "undulations." The UFO slowlylifts off to an altitude of 30-40 metersand then immediately develops anextraordinary speed which noterrestrial aircraft can approach.Sometimes, the plasma cloud aroundthe UFO takes the shape of a "smallsickle."

In 1974, a UFO observation stationwas set up in the U.S., or rather, astation for "attracting" UFOs. Thestation shines beams into the sky from100 searchlights of a million watts each.A UFO visited the station; it made twoturns over it and was flying at a speed of16,000 kilometers per hour. (Thisparagraph apparently refers to the fieldlaboratory of Project StarlightInternational near Austin, Texas. It isinaccurate regarding the lightingsystem and power level. A widelydistributed photograph was taken thereshowing a track with two sharp turns.

While consulting for PSI, however, Iperformed a vector analysis showingthat the photo was compatible with asmall, sudden displacement of thecamera. The photographer, in fact, hadindicated concern that he might havebumped his tripod during the timeexposure. Ray Stanford has sinceconfirmed this fact.-J. McCampbell)

In the U.S. and other countries,UFOs have flown over lots of people atan altitude of 30 meters. There havebeen cases of undesirable effects fromthese vehicles: people have beenburned and been temporarily paralyzedwhile being fully conscious; somepeople close to UFOs haveexperienced sharp pains, electricalshocks, loss of sight, etc. The Americanscientist McCampbell also wrote aboutthis. We hope that his monograph onUFOs will be published in 1978.

The spectrum of a UFO wasmeasured near Cuba and it wasestablished that its frequency wasapproximately 3,000 megahertz. Thehypothesis was put forward that UFOscarry an electromagnetic field.

The UFOs were built -by anextraterrestrial civilization not duringthe present time but in age-old antiquityby earth standards. The Bible mentionsthese phenomena. In the distant past, they caused flare-ups of religious cults. In the papyrus of Thutmose HI, aPharaoh of the XVIII dynasty, there is adescription of a UFO which appearedover his army. The pharaoh describesthe event father clearly in practicalconcepts for those times. In thechronicles of Alexander of Macedonia, there is a story about a massive flight ofUFOs while his army was crossing theTigrus and Euphrates. Aristotle calledUFOs "celestial discs." Pliny, thenaturalist, also mentions them.

McCampbel l provided asystematic analysis of 1,000 UFOlandings and 100 cases of contactsbetween their pilots and earthlings. In40 percent of the cases, the UFO pilotsare completely like 'us in height andbuild (giants over 2 to 2l/2 meters tallrarely show up). Tsiolkovskiy iscorrect; in the work "The Will of theUniverse; Unknown IntelligentForces," he expressed the idea thatintelligent inhabitants of other planetsmust look like us.

(Russia, continued)The UFO pilots are distinguished

by their athletic build. They have rathermobile and static features. They hardlyreflect any emotion. There is only onerecorded instance where a smileflashed across their faces when anItalian peasant woman went to meet thepilots, who had landed in a field, with abouquet of flowers. As a rule, the pilotsavoid contacts with people. Femalecrews have also been seen. One of thefemale pilot's hair hung down to herknees. All of the UFO pilots worespacesuits which encompassed theirbodies. Some did not wear pressuresuits, others did. In 60 percent of thecases, the pilots were dwarfs with largeheads, with two holes in their faceinstead of a nose and with deep-seteyes. They had disproportionately longarms and legs and their height did notexceed 1m 10 cm. "Little men" 33 .cmtall have also been seen. The dwarfsalso wore spacesuits; but, they wereseen more frequently in pressure suitsthan were the representatives of theprevious group of pilots. But, after all, tribes of pigmys also live alongsidetribes of tall and medium-sized peopleon earth.

While not displaying any specialinterest in the people they meet, theUFO pilots (who are sometimes called"humanoids") do display a certainhumaneness. They do not respond tofiring on their vehicles by killing people;they do not harm people during theirencounters; they do not display anyaggressiveness at all.

Extraterrestrial Life

A lot of technical, as well asphilosophical, questions have sprungup among scientists as a result of thearrival of extraterrestrial beings, ingeneral, because it representsintelligent life in space. In issue No. 9 ofthe journal VOPROSY FILOSOFII andin several other issues of the journal, the Soviet astrophysicist I. Shkolvskiyexpressed the opinion that intelligenceand life on earth are unique and it wouldbe impossible to find anything like it forhundred of light years on other planets.According to Shklovskiy, if there wasanother similar civilization close toours, it would have made contact with

earthlings a long time ago by using theradio, like we have. After declaring thatintelligence on earth is a unique andvery rare occurrence in the universe,Shklovskiy philosophizes on the topicthat earthlings are responsible for anenormous part of the universe; they canconsider it their own, settle it, etc.

However, first, it is not absolutelymandatory for another civilization tomake contact with ours. It is possiblethat they are examining us like weexamine ants. Second, this civilizationcould have communications equipmentwhich far exceeds the radio in its speedof ' receiving and t r ansmi t t i nginformation and which is still notaccessible to us at the present time.Third, this civilization could havedeveloped on a completely differentbasis than ours (for example, on atechnocratic basis) and the differencesare so great that contacts are eitherimpossible or premature. At any rate, sooner or later, contact with anothercivilization will basically have enormousconsequences for earthlings.

In a conversation with Leninpublished in his reminiscences, HerbertWells states tha t , when thec o n v e r s a t i o n t o u c h e d u p o nextraterrestrial civilizations, Lenin saidthat an encounter between them andearthlings would be the greatestrevolution in life, natural science, andphilosophy. This part of theconversation was not reflected in Wells'book "Russia in Darkness."

Perhaps a society which hassurpassed us has finer physical fieldsthan we do. Let's just take the problemof the speed of light. For theirexperimental discovery of speedswhich exceed the speed of light by afactor of ten (10 C) which was made in1971 as a result of the observation ofquasars, 21 American scientists wereawarded the supreme Rumford Prize.Academician Al'bert losifovich Veynikof the Belorussian SSR Academy ofSciences proved the possibility ofspeeds above the speed of light. Bymeans of an in-depth mathematicalanalysis, he arrived at the conclusionthat speeds which exceed the speed oflight by a factor of 7,000, i.e., 2.1 billionkilometers per second, are possible in aspace vacuum.

In his work on thermal dynamics

which was published in 1974, Veynikdeveloped his theory on the sixmaterial, physical fields which comprisethe basis of the world. Three of themare known to earth science; the threefiner ones are still not known. His workson the photon's mass — and hisattempt to create a unified theory for aunified physical field which includes theelectromagnetic, gravitational andnuclear fields, where one of the threevectors compensates for the others —are interesting. Veynik believes that aspace vacuum is a special form ofmatter's existence and movement. Moreover, the smaller the particles, themore powerful their bonds are. Thus, the vacuum can give birth to energywith enormous power. From this, it ispossible that extraterrestrial beingsare u s i n g o the r means ofcommunications which are many timesmore efficient than radio waves.

According to Veynik, if speeds of2.1 billion kilometers per second (7,000times faster than light) exist, we couldfly to a planet located 30 light yearsaway from us in 1.8 earth days. It ispossible that these speeds are withinreach of the UFOs.

Everything that we have statedabove shows that mankind on earth isfar from being alone in the universe andit cannot claim "control" of a large partof the visible universe or metagalaxy. Inorder to come up to a level with other, higher extraterrestrial civilizations, mankind must first put an end to itsatavistic social institutions of . thecapitalist type, destructive wars, andthe power of imperialist monopolies.

Several hypotheses exist for theorigin of UFOs: the - "mountain"hypothesis of N.K. Rerik, the oceanhypothesis, the space hypothesis....The majority now adheres to the spacehypothesis. UFOs are a product of ane x t r a t e r r e s t r i a l c i v i l i z a t i o n .Incidentally, more on the antiquity ofUFOs (by earth standards). In theTret'yakov Gallery, there is an ancienticon on display with a "flying saucer"depicted off to the side of the maindrawing....

Like any mechanism, UFOs havebreakdowns. Pilots have beenobserved hustling about a UFO withsmoke coming out of it. A UFO landedon White Lake in Vologodskaya

14

Page 15: Mufon ufo journal 1978 7. july

Oblast. The vehicle dove to the bottomand, based on several signs, it remainedin an emergency situation for days. When it surfaced from the lake after therepairs, it tore off a huge chunk of thebank and lifted it up during its take off. Itwould have taken an astronomicalnumber of excavators to dp this work.

Sometimes the UFQs throw off afibrous liquid which has received thename "angel's hair." In the USSR, 7-8scientific institutes undertook ananalysis of it. The Soviet scientistSokolov-Petryanov stated that thisliquid is a combination of boron andsilica which still cannot be duplicated inearth laboratories. UFOs haveexploded over the ocean, naturallywithout leaving any . trace. But,fragments of the body were preservedin an explosion over northern Brazil. An analysis of the metal showed that itis an alloy of magnesium oxide andstrontium which is also not within reachof production on earth at present. Itsspecific gravity is 1.86.

Kh. Piccard (sic, probably J.Piccard) described a UFO; it passednear his underwater vehicle. Whiletelling about his trip on the Kon-Tiki,Thor Heyerdahl mentioned a UFOwhich surfaced in front of his soundingline and was as bright as the sun.

Mankind a Risk?

Our civilization so far has notknown the grief of a nuclearcatastrophe but it can cause irreparabledisaster/Even N.K. Rerik, and recentlyI.L. Leonov, warned us about this; theywere warning all the progressive peopleon earth. It is possible that the UFOflights to earth are explained by the factthat mankind is "an explosive risk" forspace. The civilization which createdthe UFOs is looking for a way to makethe earth safe and, possibly at the sametime, a significant part of the galaxy, where the balance can be destroyed bythis, by threat of a catastophe. There isalso another hypothesis: mankind onearth is radiating psychic energy intospace. Such a strong radiation isfrequently the result of stress. Thepsychic energy, the Psi field, continuesan independent existence in space anddiffuses. This disturbs and upsets theextraterrestrial beings.

A lot of this does not fit into theframework of our usual thinking. Afterall, for a long time, we did not recognizeplasma as a state of matter. And, to thisday, students are taught that the speedof light is the limit for physical speeds.

• What will the majority of the professorsdo if the opposite is discovered? Ourrespected astrophysicist I. Shklovskiyhas displayed inconsistency in hisviews. In the 5 July 1976 PRAVDA, heand Candidate for Physicomathe-matical Sciences Matveyenkopublished an article "The View fromThree Continents" where theydeclared that the speed of therelativistic particles emitted by thequasars reaches 10 times the speed oflight (10 C), but he has renounced theseviews in subsequent works.... The lateMinister Loginov distributed tables withdrawings and descriptions of differenttypes of UFOs, which he received fromabroad, to all the aviation institutes. This has probably already been of useto the aircraft designers. EdwardCondon, the chairman of the UFOcommittee who finished his work in thebeginning of 1968 and "declared" that asignificant part of the UFOs wereoptical illusions in the atmosphere, admitted before his death that the CIAdemanded this conclusion from him inspite of the facts. (There is no knowndocumentation for this assertion.-Editor)

In the near future, the populationof the Soviet Union will apparently besignificantly more widely informedabout UFOs. There is a vast, seriousliterature on this score abroad (and notjust cheap, trashy books filled withcheap sensation). I will cite the book ofthe honored French academician,Jacques Berzhe (sic; probably Bergier),on UFOs, the book of Master Shatelen(?; sic) "Our Ancestors Came FromOuter Space" and McCampbelPsmonograph. I hope they will bepublished in 1978. A question arises atthis point on Adamski's book whichwas published in the U.S. at one time.He tells about his 10-day visit to Venuswhere he was supposedly taken by aUFO crew. I am very cautious aboutthis book. But, I must say that the storycould have been just as successfulabout another planet where an"earthling" was taken. The book is

interesting because the author depictsthe extraterrestrial beings as free andhappy people who have lived forthousands of years and who have, strictly speaking, a communist systemat the highest stage of development. ToAdamski's question on the people'slongevity, the scientists of this planetreplied that the duration of life must besought in the way of life itself. Adamskicompromised himself and his booksomewhat by the fact that hesupposedly received instructions fromthe "flying saucer" civilization on howto predict earthquakes and othernatural disasters on earth; he mademistakes and became an inveterateliar.

"...there are other ,spaceships observing us."

The previously mentioned reportsof the American astronauts who visitedthe Moon are exceptionally interesting.Their agreed-upon code for designatingUFOs was the phrase "Saint Nicholas,"but, they were so amazed with whatthey saw when they arrived on theMoon from Apollo that theytransmitted to earth without the code:"Directly across from us, on the otherside of the crater, there are otherspaceships observing us." And Aldrinshot his film which shows the UFOs onthe Moon. I hope you will also be able tosee it in 1978.

Apollo left a capsule on the Moonwith the texts — in 72 languages — ofthe UN Declaration on Human Rightsand the International Agreement onSpace and Celestial Bodies, etc., but, inthe sense of c o n t a c t w i t hextraterrestrial civilizations, this efforthas not had any success yet. It was keptsecret, but the company whichprepared the capsule and the textstalked about it to the press. The Moonis evidently a transhipment base forUFOs and every Apollo which has, flown to the Moon has been underthe "observation" canopy of the UFOs.It was not by accident that theAmerican astronauts were notsuccessful in their attempt to explode anuclear device for scientific purposeson the Moon. Instead, the oxygencylinder on Apollo exploded. Theywere also not able to blow up the upper

UFOTECH NOTE

By John F. Schuessler

During the past several years anumber of scientists, researchers, andpoliticians have suggested theutilization of the North American AirDefense Command's (NORAD) Baker-Nunn space cameras to record UFOdata. The Baker-Nunn is a 6000-poundfilm camera system that can track andphotograph those satellites which aretoo small or too far out in space to beobserved by the radar and telemetricelements of the NORAD system. Theseunits were located at Edwards AirForce Base in California, San Vito deiNormanni in Italy, Sand Island in theCentral Pacific, on Mt. John in NewZealand, and at Cold Lake in Alberta,Canada. The Baker-Nunn is said tohave the capability of tracking aspeeding bullet at 200 miles. It is easy tospeculate on a number of potentialUFO tracking applications for thissystem.

Now Baker-Nunn is obsolete. Anew five-site system; .with 40-inchtelescopes, video cameras, and digitalcomputers will be installed at WhiteSands, N.M., Hawaii, Korea, NorthAfrica, and in the Middle East. The newsystem — called ground-based electro-optical deep space surveillance(GEODSS) — has been designed toprovide both increased sensitivity in itsdetection of objects and increasedspeed with which the data can beanalyzed.

The GEODSS will be able todetect objects on the order of 1 squaremeter at 20,000 nautical miles altitudereflecting 10 percent of its light. Anautomatic moving target indicatormakes the GEODSS ideal for trackingspace objects, including UFOs.Additional information can be found inAviation Week and Space Technologymagazine, May 22, 1978.

(Russia, continued)stage of the booster and so it continuesto fly around the Moon.

The attention devoted to UFOs inother countries is very great. Forexample, in France, a special UFOcenter and airport were built inToulouse on 20 April 1977,

Throughout the world, there havebeen 100 cases of people beingkidnapped by UFO crews (real or madeup cases) over a 30-year period. Forexample, there is a well known case inthe U.S. where the Hill's, husband andwife, were drawn from their automobileby means of hypnosis (sic) into a "flyingsaucer" where they were examined bydifferent monitoring units. Mrs. Hillremembered a map with a picture of 21stars on a background which wasstreaked with copper. Subsequently, after a very long study of stellar maps byexperts, a group of astronomers cameto the conclusion that the stellar sky isseen like this from a star which is 30light years away from us and which islocated in the Reticulumconstellation...

The last time a UFO was seen inthe USSR was a month ago (October1977) near the village of SharapovaIkhota near Serpukhov.

Now, let's look at slides withpictures of UFOs and their crews.

I will answer the notes (on answersto several questions).

A question on the opinion of theUSSR Academy of Sciences Council onAstronomy. Academician Artsimovich, its deceased chairman, was led astrayby Menzel's book- and by Condon'sconclusion which was made under CIAorders. Therefore, Artsimpvich cameout against UFOs.

A question on the Tunguska"meteorite." It manuevered over thearea. In my opinion, it was a UFO.

A question on the UN's attitude tothe problem. The tiny island-stateGrenada is in the island group of theLesser Antilles in the Atlantic Ocean.Grenada is a member of the UN.Because UFOs frequently fly to thissmall tropical island, the government ofGrenada suggested that the UN (and itdistributed the appropriate paperworkamong the delegations) declare 1978the year of the "flying saucer" and that,in their honor, they issue specialpostage stamps and postcards,

literature popularizing them, etc. Wewill see what the results of this proposalwill be.

A question on how to take thearticle by science fiction writerYeremey Parnov in KOMSOMOL'-SKAYA PRAVDA on 23 November1976, which criticizes a lecture onUFOs at the Coulomb MMZ (meaningof acronym unknown-Editor). I thinkthat Parnov did not act properly.

With a synopsis of Zigel's lecture inhis hands which was compiled bysomebody, not without inaccuraciesand distortions (such synopses areeven sold at the "carry-in" market inOdessa for 5 rubles apiece), YeremeyParnov called up Zigel and asked him ifhe really gave a lecture on this topic.Zigel confirmed it. Then, Parnov, withthe paltry knowledge he had acquired, criticized this synopsis in thenewspaper; it was not even correctedby Zigel.

A question on our pilots who haveseen UFOs. There are such pilots.Valentin Ivanovich Akkuratov, a seniornavigator of polar aviation who is wellknown by everybody, wrote fourreports to the Ministry of Civil Aviationon his encounters with UFOs.

Now, about radars. Unfortunately, radars seldom locate UFOs.Altogether, five cases out of a hundred.(A few hundred radar UFO cases areknown in the United States.-Editor)

(A Washington, D.C., newssource, who is checking on otheraspects of this report, has informed methat the statements attributed toAstronaut Buzz Aldrin about UFOs onthe Moon were confirmed by his newsbureau's space reporter, who eoveredthe Apollo story at the time. Aldrin saidthem as a joke. It is possible that thestory filtered through to the SovietUnion in garbled form, as is evident insome other cases. Other portions ofthis report still may be significant, andwe will continue to seek verification ofthem.—Editor)

STATEMENT OF CORRECTION

In my paper, "A Survey of CEIDReports for 1977," published in theMUFON Symposium Proceedings of1978, I wrote the following, under thesubhead, Rumors and Hoaxes" (p. 26):

"As this is being written, reports are circulating that thePaciencia, Brazil, abduction ofSept. 30 (Case 54) may be a hoax.Details are not now available."

I hasten to correct thismisstatement: the report of a hoax wasan unfounded rumor, and I am guilty ofhaving repeated it without checkingfurther. In addition, the correct date forthis case is September 15, 1977--nofSeptember 30.

Mrs. Irene Granchi, a veteranUFO investigator from Rio de Janeiro, was one of two wel l -knowninvestigators who checked on thisunusual report in great detail. Anindependent inquiry was conducted byDr. Walter Buhler, whose report waspublished in the SBEDV Bulletin, No.121/125 (March-December, 1978).Both investigators concludedindependently that the abductionreport by Antonio Bogado La Rubiawas genuine. Mrs. Granchi's full reportwas published in the Canadian UFOReport, Vol. IV, No. 7 (Summer, 1978);in addition, her report formed the basisfor an article by Coral Lorenzen, entitled "UFO Abduction in Brazil,"which was published in Fate Magazine,July 1978, pp. 48-54.

In an understandably exasperatedletter to me dated August 8,1978,'Mrs.Granchi writes, in part:

"I lay here my vehementprotest to your irresponsiblestatement. Rumor-mongering isnot my cup of tea!...Neither I, norDr. Buhler, knew of each other'sreport before it was published. Iendorse what I said in my article,"Antonio's Ordeal" (pp. 13-19), inthe Canadian UFO Report, citedabove-tb). I have nothing to add -or to subtract. It is shameful toeven think of making aninsinuation such as yours'. I shall, after this, read what you writeabout other cases with a grain ofsalt."18

North CarolinaProjects

George D. Fawcett, State Directorfor North Carolina, has a study projecton "Human Reactions to UFOs." "I amtrying to find out the first thing a persondoes after his UFO encounter, orshortly thereafter," Fawcett says. "Thisis a human interest angle, which Ibelieve will tell us a great deal about thetruth or falsity of a UFO experience."

Some examples he has received todate are:

"My favorite pipe dropped out ofmy mouth and floated down theDelaware River...""We went out night after night tothe same area to see if the UFOswould return...""I checked out all the books at thelocal library to try to learn moreabout the UFO subject.:."''"We all started chain smoking ordrinking heavily and tried toforget our UFO encounter...""My wife and I attended programsat the local science museums and

. planetariums, in an effort to findout more about where thesethings (UFOs) might comefrom...""We stayed up all night discussingour UFO experience and trying tomake sense out of the wholebewildering UFO sighting..."

Mr. Fawcett will be giving his 3%-hour illustrated UFO lecture "UFOsand UFOnauts" at the P.E. MonroeAuditorium, Lenior Rhyne College inHickory, North Carolina, on Thursdaynight, November 16 at 7:30 PM. Theprogram will be open to students, faculty, and the public.

I stand properly rebuked. Iapologize to Mrs. Granchi for havingimpugned her integrity as aninvestigator. I have read her reports inthe APRO Bulletin and elsewhere foryears, and I know them to be the verymodels of conscientiousness anddocumentation. I accept her rebukewith the promise that in the future I shallbe more careful when confronted byunfounded rumors. — Ted Bloecher,New York, N.Y., August 18, 1978.
