A Little HistoryDemocracy first began in Ancient Greece, over 2,000 years ago, but they didn’t really last that long because the king had the power in the countries. Around the 1200’s though, a couple rulers started allowing certain citizens to be part of the government. By the 17th and 18th century, groups of people started to think that everyone had certain rights. In North America, colonists started to think

that they didn’t have enough rights so they won a war to freedom and established the United States.

In a democracy, there is either an elected leader or a council that votes the decision.

✻ Representative Democracy is where different groups of citizens vote for people to go in a group and discuss the rules

✻ Direct Democracy is where a leader is chosen or a decision is made by the majority of votes from the citizens

Well... First, the people or a group of people ask for a decision, like if a group of people asked that guns be allowed in the USA, and if it seemed like a good idea, a council would take it under consideration, and when the council came to their final decision, it gets passed on to a president, who says either yes or no to the decision.

IMPACTIt allows the citizens to choose what they want and gives them liberty. But sometimes the people vote for the wrong decisions, the country goes in to chaos and people get hurt. Sometimes it is not a good leader like George Bush when he told the Americans to shop. Of course, sending your country to battle the government in another country to try and save the people, might be heroic, but the truth is, you are, in a way, just putting them in more danger because the government will obviously fight back.

Another scenario is that your country is a democracy, but there is a dictator running, and since the dictator is making false promises, he is getting more votes than the honest, virtuous candidate.

ROLESThere are many roles in a democracy including the Supreme Court, the Executive President, and the President. There are three branches: The Executive Branch, which is responsible for carrying out the laws, The Judicial Branch- which is responsible for the administration of justice, and The Legislative Branch- Which is the Branch that makes the laws.

RIGHTS

• To speak their opinion

• To vote

• To not have soldiers in you house

• To not go to trial if not accused by a Grand Jury

• To not pay excessive bail

• To not be a slave

• To own a weapon

• To follow a different religion

• To not have your house searched

• To not testify against yourself

• To have a public trial

• To have freedom of the press
