James & John: “Grant us that we may

sit, one on Your right hand and the

other on Your left, in Your glory” (Mk

10:37).

• The folks who sat on a king’s right & left

were very important.

• “When the ten heard it, they began to be

greatly displeased with James and John”

(v 41).

“You know that those who are

considered rulers over the Gentiles lord

it over them, and their great ones

exercise authority over them. Yet it shall

not be so among you” (Mk 10:42-43).

There is nothing wrong in being a

leader.

• The Jews had a host of leaders.

• The church has leaders.

“Remember those who rule over you, who

have spoken the word of God to you” (Heb

13:7).

“Obey those who rule over you” (Heb 13:17).

Jesus used Gentiles as an example for a

couple reasons.

• Jewish leaders often used Gentiles as

negative examples.

• Ancient Near Eastern kings were

notoriously tyrannical.

The leaders of the Gentiles lorded it

over their subjects.

• The verb “lord over” refers to exercising

authority for one’s own benefit.

“Whoever desires to become great

among you shall be your servant. And

whoever of you desires to be first shall

be slave of all” (Mk 1:43b-44).

Throughout Scripture, we’re told to

serve our fellow men.

• “Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise

the dead, cast out demons. Freely you

have received, freely give” (Matt 10:8).

• “As each one has received a gift, minister

it to one another, as good stewards of the

manifold grace of God” (1 Pet 4:10).

• About the Good Samaritan: ““Go and do

likewise” (Lk 10:37).

“Even the Son of Man did not come to

be served, but to serve, and to give His

life a ransom for many” (v 45).

• The Son of Man had every right to be

served.

• The early church saw Jesus as a servant.

“Who is greater, he who sits at the table, or he

who serves? Is it not he who sits at the table?

Yet I am among you as the One who serves”

(Lk 22:27).

Jesus “made Himself of no reputation, taking

the form of a bondservant, and coming in the

likeness of men” (Phil 2:7).

A ransom for many.

• “Ransom” is the payment used to secure

the release of a captive.

• 1 Pet 1:18-19.
