1. To Bear Witness to Christ’s Identity

Jn.1:31-34 John the Baptist

I did not know Him (Jesus); but that He should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water.

And John bore witness, saying: ”I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him.

I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, “Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.” And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.

2. To Glorify Jesus

Jn.16:13 Jesus to his disciples

He will glorify Me, for

He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.

All things that the Father has are Mine.

Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and

declare it to you.

3. To Convict the World

John 16:8-11 Jesus to his disciples

And when He (the Spirit) has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

Of sin, because they do not believe in Me;

Of righteousness because I go to My Father and you see me no more.

And of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

Jn.3:6-7 Jesus to NicodemusThat which is born of flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’

Jn.4:24 Jesus to the woman at the wellGod is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.

4. To Initiate the New Birth and True Worship in Men

Page 7: The Role of the Holy Spirit

5. To Strengthen and Help Those who Are Born Again

Jn.14:16-18 Jesus to his disciples regarding the Spirit

I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper (Comforter), that He may abide with you forever,

I will not leave you orphans;I will come to you.

(Spirit in us = Christ in us)

even (i.e.) the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.

6. To Guide them into Truth and Foretell Future Events

Jn.16:12-13 Jesus to his disciplesI still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now…

However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth [ultimately, the cannon of Scripture]

for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak;AND he will tell you things to come. [Short-term prophecies and New Testament book of Revelation]

7. To Produce Rivers of Living Water Flowing from Them

Jn.7:37-38 Jesus to Pharisees & JewsIf anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.

Jn.7:39 cont’dThis He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
