• Sin means “missing the mark”.

• Selfishness: “My way not Your way.”

• Can you live a “good” life?

• Matthew chapters 5-7 Jesus describes a completely good, sinless life.

• God’s standard is so high no one can achieve it. All fall short. All have sinned.

The Problem of Sin


• Jesus said, “Evil thoughts come from the inside, from people’s hearts. So do sexual sins, stealing and murder. Adultery, greed, hate and cheating come from people’s hearts too. So do desires that are not pure, and wanting what belongs to others. And so do telling lies about others and being proud and being foolish. All those evil things come from inside a person. They make him ‘unclean.’ ”(Mark 7:21–23, NIrV)

The Results of Sin2. Addiction: The power of sin.


• “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23, ESV)

• This law is part of the foundation of creation: the penalty of sin is death.

• God cannot change this law without changing who He is.

• “But your sins have separated you from your God. They have caused Him to turn His face away from you. So He won’t listen to you.” (Isaiah 59:2, NIrV)

• Sin destroys our relationship with God.

• God comes to us in the person of Jesus and says, “If you give Me your sins I will take them upon Myself and in return I will give you My goodness.”

What did God do about the problem of sin?


• The first cost is ours. We have to admit that we have a bag of sin to give Him. This is a very small cost to our pride and self opinion, but it has to be paid.

• The second cost is God's. God in the person of Jesus suffered all the results of our sin.

• The terrible cruelty and death of crucifixion is the reality of the results of sin.

What does it cost?


• Jesus said, “God loved the world so much that He gave His one and only Son. Anyone who believes in Him will not die but will have eternal life.” (John 3:16, NIrV)

Why did God do this for us?

We are found guilty but Jesus pays the fine. “For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And it was not paid with mere gold or silver, which lose their value. It was the precious Blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God.” (1 Peter 1:18–19, NLT)

Jesus pays the price for your freedom from slavery. He unlocks your chains. He sets you free.

Jesus shed His blood as a sacrifice for sin. The Blood of Jesus washes us clean of all sin.

“For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed His life, shedding his blood. ” (Romans 3:25, NLT)
