3. Formed 5 million years ago. According to the science documents, Son Doong cave was formed when a river running through the limestone area buried along a fault line. Over millions of years, due to water erosion, a giant tunnel was formed under the mountain range. At the soft rock points, the ceiling was collapsed forming holes which shaped a giant dome long time later. erosion and water currents create a giant tunnel in the ground below the mountains.
