Aim

The aim in triathlon is to beat the other competitors in the swimming leg, cycling leg and running leg in consecutive order.

Rules

During the swim, competitors can rest by holding an object such as a buoy or stationary object but may not propel themselves using these objects.

During the bike leg, triathletes may not move forward without the bicycle.

Although drafting is allowed, competitors may not block out other riders.

Competitors are allowed to walk but they cannot crawl during the running leg.

Equipment

The equipment used in the swimming leg is a wetsuit, goggles, water resistant cycling shoes and a swimming cap.

The equipment used in the cycling leg of a triathlon is a bike, helmet and water resistant cycling shoes.

The equipment used in the running leg are heart rate monitors and running shoes made for a triathlon.

Origins

The first triathlon was held on September 25, 1974 at Mission Bay in San Diego, California, USA.

It was created by Don Shanahan and by Jack Johnstone.

It was sponsored by the San Diego Track Club. Triathlon was introduced into the Olympics in 2000.

Playing Surface

Triathlon is based on two surfaces, water and road.

Some leading countries in the world are New Zealand, Austria, Australia, Switzerland and USA.
