OVERVIEW OF RUNNING

The technical definition of running is: moving at a

speed faster than a walk, never having both feet on

the ground at the same time.

Running is a popular physical activity, but it requires

a lot of hard work. It takes time to improve your time

and distance, but it is very rewarding afterwards.

THE HISTORY OF RUNNING

Over 10,000 years ago, the Tarahumara Indians were

hunters, and they used to run 15-75 miles a day. The

man who made running an art was Pheidippides, in

490 BC. The Athens Olympic games held the first

marathon in 1896. The marathon was 26 miles long!

Runners from back then and from today all agree

that there is something about running that they love,

and it becomes addictive.

PROPER AND SAFE TECHNIQUE

Make sure you are looking forward instead of down.

Your shoulders should stay low and loose, without tension.

Don’t clench your fists tightly, just hold your fingers lightly against your palms.

You should try to run in an upright position because it helps lung capacity.

There shouldn’t be a loud noise every time your foot hits the ground, it should be springy and quiet.

RULES

Running in general has no rules, but marathons do. Marathon rules are simple and involve common sense. They basically revolve around no cheating. Examples of cheating are: using a shortcut, grabbing others and pushing and shoving. Other helpful things that a marathon runner may consider are: Not drinking too much water Having a proper running shoe Having a stop watch so they can track how

well they’re doing

PLAYING SURFACE

When you are running its not considered playing, unless it’s the game of tag. You can run from anything from the forest floor to the treadmill at the gym. Lots of people that live in places that get a lot of snow like treadmills, whereas people who live in California might prefer running outside because it’s often sunny.

ATTIRE

Synthetic materials are the best/most popular because they draw sweat away from the body, whereas cotton stays wet when you sweat in it.

Synthetic socks reduce discomfort and reduce your chance of getting blisters.

You should have good running shoes that support your arch and are made for running.

If you are running in the dark, make sure to stay visible. Wear something that reflects light or bring a light yourself, that way you can stay safe.

SAFETY ISSUES

Running can be very rough on your joints and your body; if you don’t stretch or if you over do it, you are bound to pull a muscle or injure yourself badly.Another safety issue has to do with running in the dark. Be sure that you are visible to passing vehicles, otherwise there could be a possibility of getting hit.If you hurt yourself, be sure to rest until your injury is better, otherwise you can injure yourself further.
