T20 World Cup Preview: Sri Lanka Vs. New Zealand by Cricket todayin Sports / Extreme Sports (submitted 2014-03-31)Sri LankaThe equation is straightforward for the Lankans. They will have to beat New Zealand in order to qualify for the semis. The conditions will be in their favor as spinners are having a ball in the tournament. Moreover, Sri Lankan batsmen are more accomplished on the sub-continent pitches. Kumar Sangakkara is finding hard to score runs off his willow, which is putting his team under pressure as he is one of their best batsmen. The good news is that Mahela Jayawardene is back in the form and is looking dangerous for the rivals. Dilshan too has scored some runs while the likes of Angelo Mathews, Kusal Perera and Thisara Perera have shown their intent against all sorts of bowlers. All said and done, the eyes will be on Lankan spinners. Ajantha Mendis is leaking lot of runs which could prove costly when he bowls to New Zealand batsmen. Sachithra Senanayake has some form going for him and is Lankas triumph card at the moment. It will be a foolish thing to doubt Malingas intensity in this format of the game.
New Zealand They have batsmen who can score against any opposition. The likes of Brendon McCullum and Ross Taylor have already played key role in the previous games of the T20 World Cups but there is a question mark on the form of Martin Guptill and Corey Anderson. These two were made part of the team on the possibility of getting best from them in Bangladesh. However, they have disappointed sofar. The crunch match against Sri Lanka is the perfect stage to announce comeback and Guptill and Anderson will certainly be looking at this one. If these two gets going, there is hardly any chance left for the Asian team to qualify for the last four. The problem with the team is the lack of quality spinners. Nathan McCullum is their premier spinner but he has fewer variations, which could cause the Kiwis. Apart from him, there is hardly anyone who could take wickets with his spin bowling.
Verdict T20 is one format where predictions are more often proved wrong as one good performance from a batsman or a bowler is enough to secure a win. I will go with Sri Lanka after looking at all the possibilities. They got batsmen who can score tons of runs on the slow and turning tracks while their bowlers are capable of taking wickets. I am not ruling out New Zealand completely but they have less chances of upsetting Lankans.
