I n t r o d uct io nAll the Golfers want to increase their distance with the driver. And lengthoff the tee is held is such high regard that many amateur golfers kidthemselves that they drive the ball 15-30 yards further than they actuallydo*…

Once you are certain that you are using clubs that are fitted for you, concentrate on executing your swing correctly. If you have a slowerswing speed, consider a driver with a flexible shaft and a larger clubfaceto provide a larger sweet spot. Practice on the driving range to grooveyour swing and create “muscle memory” to achieve a longer drive.

In this article, we’ll examine how you can increase your driver distance ina very real and measurable way on the golf course. It covers areas suchas technique, fitness and custom-fitted clubs..

Step 1Master Good Fundamentals

When your swing is fundamentally sound, you’ll hit the ball further –much further. Most amateur golfers, even low handicappers, haveinefficiencies in their set up and swing that is costing them vital yardageevery time they play.

Factors like poor weight transfer, a swing plane that is too flat or toosteep, an incorrect grip, too much hip turn, a soft left side at impact andbad posture (to name a few), all rob you of power and driving distance.

Step 2Refine Your Technique for Big Drives

If you feel confident that your set up and swing are fundamentally sound, there are some adjustments you can make to gain extra yardage with thebig stick.

Here are few tips that you can follow to refine techinque for big drive:

1. Take a slightly wider stance than normal for a more stable base

2. Tip the right shoulder down a bit more. Place about 60% of yourweight on your right side.

3. Encourage a big shoulder rotation in the backswing by making sure theleft shoulder comes over and across the right knee cap

4. Make sure there is plenty of resistance in the hips and legs.

5. Don’t let the knees flex or extend too much as you turn back.

6. Maintain a good rhythm and timing throughout the swing. Any loss ofbalance will probably result in a poor strike on the ball – which negateseverything else you do.

Step 3Improve Your Strength and Flexibility

When it comes to increasing your distance with the driver (or any club forthat matter), improvements in your fitness can rival improvements intechnique.

But even if you do have the basic functional fitness to make and controla full golf swing at speed, scientific research has shown that a programof golf-specific exercises can do the following for you:

1. Increase your average swing speed and therefore shot distance withevery club.

2. Increase your driver distance by as much as 20-30 yards.

3. Improve your ball striking accuracy and consistency.

4. Reduce your overall scores.

A combination of strength and flexibility exercises will have the greatestimpact on your driving distance and overall golf game.

Step 4 Custom Fitted Drivers

A club-fitting specialist will measure the launch conditions of your drivesand then suggest a particular combination of club loft, shaft flex andshaft weight etc. to help you get the most distance and the mostconsistent ball flight from your current swing.

But make no mistake – custom fitting won’t compensate for poortechnique. In fact, the more inconsistent your ball striking and ball flightis, the less useful club fitting becomes.

By all means, take advantage of custom-fitting services when buying newclubs, but recognise that you probably can’t buy your way to increaseddriver distance.
