Introduction A former member of the Port Authority police

department, Nicholas Tagarelli is currently the security director of Navillus Health in Bridgewater, New Jersey. In his free time, Nicholas Tagarelli enjoys fishing, playing ice hockey, and running.

Although running can be a fun and relatively inexpensive way to get and stay fit, it can also be difficult, especially for beginners. There are things every runner should do to make their experience safe and enjoyable, such as investing in good running shoes and socks. Shoes are important because they protect a runner’s feet and joints; they also provide comfort.

Running Beginners Remember, feet can swell during a run and shoes that feel

comfortable enough at the beginning can feel restrictive by the end. Socks made of moisture-wicking material can also add to a runner’s comfort by reducing friction within the shoe.

During the run itself, don’t worry about speed. Overexertion can lead to sore muscles and lingering pain, but by slowing down and just aiming to run for a certain amount of time, you’ll make it easier for the body to adjust to a new fitness level,. A slower pace also keeps strides shorter, taking pressure off of the heel and transferring it to the middle of the foot, where it can be safely absorbed. Finally, set small, manageable goals to stay engaged and encouraged.
