Fundamentals of Extrication

• Role of the EMT• Administer care to pt

before extrication• Assure limitation of

damage to pt while extricating

• Pt care precedes extrication unless delayed movement endangers pt or EMT

• Cooperate with activities of rescuers

• Personal Safety• NUMNER 1 PRIORITY • Utilize protective clothing

necessary for call• Pt safety

• Inform pt of aspects of extrication

• Protect pt from hazards:• -Glass –Metal – Other

Types of Extrications

• Simple access• Does not need equipment

• Try opening each door• Roll down windows• Have pt unlock doors

• Complex access• Requires tools

• Separate programs for certification

Removing Patient

• Complete initial assessment• Provide critical interventions• Immobilize spine securely

• Short spine board• Rapid extrication?

• Use sufficient personnel • Path of least resistance • Continue to protect pt
