The Challenge for Asset Intensive Organisations
This talk provides real world examples of how Asset Master Data Management lies at the heart of providing a ‘joined-up’ view of asset data across the lifecycle to enable these goals to be achieved.
“The ability to make improved decisions on asset maintenance using trusted asset data across the entire asset management lifecycle is often a goal within asset intensive organizations.”
“This is key enabler for improving customer experience, reducing operating costs and improving efficiencies.”

At a major UK Rail Organisation
In the case of a Major UK Rail Organisation The timetable is their PROMISE… When they PROMISE a train can run, it will run… safely, punctually and reliably. The management of this organisation is a balancing act between the operational railway and the maintenance of the asset base.

A International UK Airport Organisation
In the case of a Major UK Airport Company The flight schedule is their PROMISE… When they PROMISE a plane can fly, it will fly… safely, punctually and reliably. The management of ‘Critical’ assets are key to the operational resilience of the airport

What does ‘Good Data’ look like?
• In asset rich organisations it is important to have a clear definition of what each asset should look like
• This is the metadata definition of each asset ! Defines the attributes that make up the asset type
! Defines each attribute in terms ownership, lifecycle, lineage, format, document references, quality metrics
! Defines the hierarchy structures the asset belongs to e.g. location, function etc.
! Defines the business rules that apply to the attributes
• Assets are compared to their metadata specification to determine their completeness and accuracy
• These specifications form the backbone of defining the quality of asset data in the enterprise
• Maintaining the specifications is a Data Stewardship function in it’s own right
• Defining the specifications must be done before mastering physical data as this provides the blue print of what to master

New Vision Required - decide on the approach…
Option 1: Consolidate all asset data into an Operational Asset Management System
– Option 1 Pros 1. If there is one dominant Asset Management
System then this is worth considering
– Option 1 Cons 1. If there is no dominant Asset Management
then this becomes high risk ! Data must be migrated to the chosen system
! The old systems must be decommissioned
! The Business is at risk of suffering operational issues
! The chosen system supports two functions (Operational and Hub)
Option 2: Create a new Asset Information Hub
– Option 2 Pros 1. Operational systems continue untouched 2. A dedicated governance model is
established around the new Hub 3. The Hub is a neutral consolidation point
– Option 2 Cons 1. Requires a new organizational structure 2. Investing in a foundation technology that
enables downstream functions 3. The implementation must be carefully
planned so incremental gains can be realized quickly
4. The concept of an enterprise Asset Information Hub needs support from across the organization

What Makes Mastering Asset Data Different
o Reliance on Specification to establish a metadata standard o Some assets are linear (e.g. tracks and runways cover long distances) and have other assets embedded in
them
o There are many types of assets - in the case of rail tracks there are more than 25, in the customer domain there are usually only two types of customer
o This increases the number of rules in terms of: ! Standardisation Rules
! Match rules
! Merge rules
! ETL mappings
o Assets are subject to a long lifecycle which results in more data being collected than entities like customer o To cope with this depth of data it is helpful to break the information into layers such as:
! Location (where is it)
! Definition (what is it)
! Condition
! Usage
! Capability
! Cost
! Performance
! Work

Our Experience
A Major UK Rail Organisation ! The Informatica MDM solution has
been implemented for the most important assets
! The Asset Information Specification have been created for these Assets
! The solution supplies joined up asset data to the Asset Data Store
A Major UK Airport Organisation ! The Asset Information Framework
was used to define which data is important for critical assets.
! The Asset Information Specification has been created for the 5 top Asset Classes.
! Next step is to implement an MDM and Asset data Store solution
Predictive maintenance was estimated would save
£50m pa on 22,000 miles of track assets
In an Airport Management Company finding drilling
samples and Specifications would save >£3m pa in
rework
