Megabytes vs MegaBitsLet’s start off with the basics… Bytes are used for actual files being stored on a hard drive. Bits are used for actual streaming of data...

Video ResolutionIt’s 2016, Standard Definition is no longer acceptable… So the choice becomes 720p vs 1080p.

Here are some questions to ask yourself.

1.Is your system 1080p ready?

2.Can your processor / graphics card handle 1080p?

3.Do you have the bandwidth to support 1080p?

If the answer is YES to all of the above, I suggest testing and using 1080p.

Adaptive Bit-rate StreamingToday most CDNs are providing something called adaptive bit-rate streaming which essentially takes the best quality stream you send and breaks it down into smaller resolutions for viewers. CDNs such as YouTube and Facebook will use Adaptive Bitrate Streaming to optimize the video quality your viewers receive based on their available bandwidth. This further supports the need to stream in the highest quality possible to allow the CDN to make the best choices for your viewers.

Calculating Bandwidth

First of all most CDNs recommend having an additional

30% of available bandwidth to sustain solid transfer

throughout your event.

General Streaming Bitrates

480p - 500-200 Kbps 720p - 1500 - 4000 Kbps

1080p - 3000 - 6000 Kbps

Ways to calculate your bandwidthSpeed Test.net - Best case scenario for available bandwidth

Speed.PTZOptics.com - Worst case Scenario for available bandwidth

Our Suggestion: Use both tests and consider the average a safe place to predict your available bandwidth.

Video Conferencing It’s becoming more commonplace to see some type of video conference being used as a way to connect multiple locations in a video conference. Your video conference will add additional need for bandwidth and processing power on your computer.
