1960s • Video compression began when an analogue videophone

system was developed • Required a wide bandwidth and produced only

postcard-size black-and-white pictures.

1980s • The COST211 video codec (Encoder/Decoder), based on

differential pulse code modulation, DPCM (Pulse Code Modulation is still used in CD audio files, called PCM/.wav files), was standardized by CCITT, under the H.120 standard.

1990s

• The Motion Picture Experts Group (MPEG) started investigating coding techniques for storage of video, such as CD-ROMs.

The aim was to develop a video codec capable of compressing highly active video such as movies, on hard disks, with a performance comparable to that of VHS quality. (Source)

• The bitrate needed for quality video at handset resolutions has gone down as video codecs have improved, while the practical/cheap bandwidth available to a subscriber has increased with new generations of mobile service. (Source)

• Apple launched the iPhone in 2007. It was the first multi-touch screen phone.

• Android based phones launched in 2008.

• Larger and higher-quality interfaces made mobile video viewing easier.

• Supports audio, video, and advanced

interactivity

• Supports most of the common video codecs

(VP6, H.264, Sorenson)

• Many phones aren’t powerful enough to support Flash properly.

• Now, Flash for mobile is seemingly dead: “In November 2011, Adobe said it would stop development of the mobile browser version of Flash, admitting that HTML5 is the future for rich multimedia content on mobiles.”(Source)

• Adobe will no longer support Flash for Android after Android 4.0. There will be no certified implementations for Android 4.1. (Source)

Pros: HTML5 allows browsers to support native video rendering. This improves performance versus traditional plugins.

Cons: Not all phone browsers support it the same way, incomplete standard, so you have to be sure to test properly. Older browsers may not fully support HTML5.

Flash · HTML5 · Apps

• HTML5 standards are not fully developed

• The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has been working on HTML5 standardization for years.

• The HTML Working Group hope to present recommendations for the standards by May 2014

• They hope over the subsequent years they will be implemented

• However, it’s up to the browser developers to adopt the standards into their functionality which require them to go through their own technical, legal and business standards.

• Also, there has not yet been a consensus on a single video format

Flash

• Flash is supported on Android, but if you don’t already have it on your phone, you won’t be able to get it-- Adobe is no longer offering Flash for Android as of summer 2012. (Source)

• Flash has never been supported on any Apple devices (iPhones or iPads), after Steve Jobs deemed it had poor security, negatively affected battery life, wasn’t designed for touchscreens, and does what most apps can do. (Source)

• Apps are device specific

• Developers must know various programming languages to develop apps for different devices

• All devices support custom apps, but apps might become outdated as devices are updated

To reach your audience you need to…

• Evaluate what your users need to DO with the video

• Determine if you are worried about users with older computers/browsers?

(If so, you need to leverage a delivery mechanism that still supports Flash)

To reach your audience you need to…

• Evaluate your mobile workforce

What types of devices are your viewers going to have – are they company issued/bring your own?

(cont’d) To reach your audience you need to…

• If everyone has their own devices, you are going to be better off using HTML5 as a standard because it is more device neutral and it will work on a variety - Blackberrys, iPhones, and Androids.

• If it is one uniform device issued by the employer, an app might be more beneficial, you can manage version control, make sure that it works on those devices, you can control the entire environment.

To create your content you need to…

• Evaluate the form factors of a tablet, phone, screen size

• Do you want just video? Slides? Slides with audio? Evaluate what you want to deliver.

• Think about cross-platform development. Do you have the time and resources to develop across multiple platforms?

• Once you have decided what devices your enterprise needs to support, you need to determine the necessary codecs.

• Flash – supports H.264, VP6, Sorenson

• HTML5 – browser specific

Internet Explorer 9 (Windows Phone): H.264

Firefox: Ogg, VP8 (WebM)

Google Chrome (Android): Ogg, VP8 (WebM), H.264 (support to be dropped soon)

Safari (iOS): H.264

• Apps – developer can select the codec they would like to include in their application

• To fully support HTML5, you need to ensure that you deliver your videos in all the above codecs.

• HTML5 – emerging standard, embraced for mobile

• Apps – most flexibility and control, costly
