  • 45% of 70-75 year old are currently online.
  • 19% of those 65 and older have home broadband access using a computer.
  • 50% of Americans age 65 and over have cell phones
  • 84% of English-speaking Hispanics have cell phones
  • 71% of blacks have cell phones
  • 61% of lower-income Americans use cell phones
  • Actively using non-voice data applications on their cell phones.
  • College-educated adults once were the predominant population using the internet, but now people with high school educations or less are going online.
  • But how do we ensure that this cyberspace will actually benefit older adults and increase their quality of life?

  • Attributes of Older Adults to be considered:
    • Age: both chronological and experiential, along with maturity level; life events and experiences (jobs, education, etc.)
    • Ability: degrees of cognitive and physical limitations or restrictions
    • Aptitude: expertise with computers and the Web (more relevant than straight measures of experience)
    • Attitude: positive (forward looking, risk-taking, and experimental) or negative (fearful or diffident), confidence levels
  • Attracted to Web by its connectivity, affordable communication, self-paced, dynamic and interactive environment, and anonymity
  • Specific characteristics of older adults that influence use of Web sites, evaluation metrics for assessing site, and guidelines for Web design for older adults
