Introduction: Canines are 3rd teeth from the mid line.“Canine eminence” is the elevated bone ridge over the labial portion of the roots. There are four canines placed at the corner of the mouth and hence called the ‘corner stones’ of the dentition. They have a single pointed cusp (also called cuspids):Mesial Contact : with lateral incisors. Distal Contact : with 1st premolar. Longest tooth in the entire arch (both crown & root).

Labial aspects:1. Shape: Pentagonal.2. Labial Surface: is convex.3. Incisal Outline: Mesioincisal slope

is generally shorter than distoincisal slope.

4. Cusp Tip: is located directly over the root center.

5. C.E.J: is curved towards the apex of the root.

6. Regardless of the prominency Labial ridge & Developmental depressions are present in both canines.

7. Height of contour: is in the cervical third.

Lingual Aspects: 1. Mesial , Distal and Incisal

outlines: are similar to their labial surface.

2. Cervical outline: asymmetrical and offset towards distal.

3. Lingual ridge and Mesiolingual & Distolingual fossae are the only characteristic feature of canines.

4. Cingulum: is prominent in both canines.

5. Height of contour: is in the cervical third.

Mesial Aspects:1. Shape: triangular like incisors.2. Dimensions: convex and widest

labiolingually of any anterior teeth .3. Labial outline: entirely convex with height of

contour in cervical third.4. Lingual outline: concane in incisal half and

convex in cingulum area.5. C.E.J: is evenly curved incisally.

Distal Surface….

Page 14: Canine presentation

Tuesday, April 11, 2023

14

Distal aspects:1. In both canines Distal

surface is similar to the Mesial surface of its own.

Incisal Surface….

Page 16: Canine presentation

Tuesday, April 11, 2023

16

Incisal aspects:1. Shape: roughly diamond .2. Cingulum: is offset towards distal.3. Labiolingually: crown is thicker towards

mesial while distally it is thinner.

Root….

Page 18: Canine presentation

18

Root:

1. Roots of both canines are single and the longest of the arch in which they are present.

2. Tip or Apex of the root is slightly offset towards distal.

3. Wider labiolingually than mesiodistally.4. Cross section at the neck of the root is

roughly ovoid.
