Why is waste a problem?

Environmental p ollution at the waste landfill

1. Landfill gas produced by the rotting waste - Methane and carbon dioxide – causes earth’s warming - Volatile organic compounds – negative effects on atmospheric

environment - Fetid substances such as hydrogen sulfide – causes acid rain

2. Serious water pollution is caused by the leachate - Leachate is created through the mixture of waste with rain and water

which flows into the soil and rivers

3. Rising of leachate level by slope disruption

4. Causes human health and sanitation problems by the increase of insects

such as flies and mosquitoes

History of Nanjido

Nanjido, the past

1. Nanjido in Korean means an island of abundant orchids and gromwells - Used to preserve a wonderful ecosystem - Flowers flourish and migratory birds came to visit every year

2. For the past 15 years, since 1978, Najido had become a landfill site - 13million 8.5 ton trucks poured out waste - Made two enormous mountains whose heights reached 94m and 98m

each

3. Leachate and methane gas continuously seeped out and deteriorated environments

History of Nanjido

Preparation for transformation

Taking 5 years from 1991 to 1996, the Master plan was prepared, the Project

implemented 4 processes:

Leachate treatment Top soil leveling and soil recovering

Extraction and recycling of landfill gas

Slope stabilization.

Conclusion

1. Nanjido was once just a place where there was a bunch of trash and foul smells

Now transformed into a lovely place to live as a result of continuous efforts

2. The change and recycling of Nanjido has began a start We all have to make efforts to help Nanjido return to its natural state By energy saving and proper reuse of trash Nanjido will present the new environmental standards to all of us

3. For this presentation, my family has visited many places around World Cup Park

I feel that the clean nature of Nanjido breathed and whispered It is a miracle that this trash mountain has changed into an eco-friendly

place that many people can enjoy
