Why wireless control for light?

• Energy savings

• controlled and therefor less “on” time

• dimming during large part of “on” time

• User experience

• change of light color

• more light when people are present

• Emergency service

• being able to increase the light level

locally when an emergency occurs

• Maintenance

• replacement of broken lights, a

replaced lamp takes over the network

status

• Installation

• lower cost than cabling

• control based on sensors

• control based on mobile devices

The solution: MyriaNed wireless control

Gossip based, no bookkeeping,

plug and play.

New Light Control, directly

setup a ballast/driver

with your mobile device.

Compatible with all common standards.

What it does?

• Switch and dim light, all at the same time (synchronous operation)

• Energy aware light usage (aim: Energy reduction)

• New light experience that was not possible before, like coloring

• Robust network, the loss of nodes is covered by other nodes in the network

• Temporary disturbance is not an issue, it keeps its old state

• Detects presence of people and possibly other parameters (sensor inputs)

• Easy to install, maintain and replace

• Secure communication

• Radio’s are designed for broadcasting.

• This implies that when you do point-to-point communication with a radio you

throw away 99% of the send energy.

• MyriaNed uses the full potential of broadcasting by sending its message to as

many neighbors as possible.

MyriaNed explained (1) Broadcasting

• To save energy MyriaNed nodes are off 99% of the time.

• They wake up at exactly the same time to communicate briefly (the “heartbeat”).

• This is a distributed (patented) algorithm.

• How often the nodes wake up depends on the application and is regulated

dynamically, we call this “Adrenaline”.

Page 7: Chess Wireless Lighting Control

MyriaNed explained (2) GOSSIP

• Data is disseminated through the network resembling human

GOSSIP behavior.

• A news-item spreads like a virus, “new” data is spread

exponentially to every node in the network.

• This is a very efficient and robust protocol, mainly for two

reasons:

• The nodes do not need to know who is in their

neighborhood at the tome of sending a message.

• The network is implicitly reliable because messages may

follow different communication routes in parallel

• Nodes can therefore be added, removed or may be physically

moving without the need to reconfigure the network.

• To control a MyriaNed network two bridges have been developed:

• WiFi

• GPRS

• It is also possible to control in the network:

• Switch

• PIR sensor

• …sensor

Why MyriaNed?

Feature Benefit

Fully meshed network Very robust; all data is distributed over the network. All

nodes form a shared data base.

Very small footprint Low cost

Invisible integration

Very scalable from 2 to 10.000 and beyond Able to handle many luminaires in a single network

without the need for routers

Able to handle luminaires over a large area

Setup is fully ad-hoc No setup configuration and bookkeeping needed

Over-the-air programmable Easy to program

Easy to update

Easy to commission

Synchronous network with absolute global time Able to perform synchronous operation; all lamps dim at

the same time.

Bridges available to WiFi and GPRS Control with existing interface devices like iPhone and

iPad

Retrofit devices in canopy lamps in

gas stations:

• Detecting activity individually.

• Dimming the light synchronously.

Running applications

Wirelessly controlled lamps in streetlights:

• Sensing a broken light source and

communicating this to a back office.

• Dimming the light according to a preset

schedule and distant commands.
