A “scoping study” looking at:

- more than 300 projects

- a range of issues – climate change,

transport, housing, health…

- the policy background

What’s going on – and what isn’t?

What’s Going On?

• A focus on climate change and health

• Lots of “crossovers”

• Most projects at the “city” level

• Most projects “enabling” – and few

“exemplifying”

• A patchwork of projects with only limited

linkages

• Limited link to regional strategies

Page 12: David Fell Behaviour Change

And what’s not going on?

- Housing & energy at home

New regional housing strategy…

- Climate change

given the scale of the challenge… beyond

awareness; and adaptation

- Food & Shopping

consequences for climate change, waste etc

- Health

particularly on ‘well being’ and mental health

Page 13: David Fell Behaviour Change

And what else is not going on?

- Water

smaller scale projects?

- Anti-social behaviour

better integration?

- Waste minimisation

beyond recycling

- Transport

tackling car addiction?

Page 14: David Fell Behaviour Change

And some more work needed:

- More audience focus

better targeting, segmentation

- The 4 E’s

Enable, engage, encourage, exemplify

- Geography

some lumpiness – opportunities for sharing

- Tourism

inward and outward impacts?

Moving Forward

• The national background to a still-novel approach is clearly vital…

• and should help the East Midlands to build upon its strong base…

• but there is much to be done…

• and, potentially, some difficult choices to be made…

Resources, co-ordination and learning are key
