Copernicus will provide accurate, timely and easily accessible information

• To improve the management of the environment • To understand and mitigate the effects of climate change • To ensure safety and security for the European citizens.

Copernicus will consist of• Five families of dedicated satellites (Sentinels) specifically for the

operational needs of the Copernicus programme. The Sentinels will be launched from 2013.

• Missions from other space agencies, called Contributing Missions - already providing a wealth of data for Copernicus services

• The in situ Component which focuses on data acquired by a multitude of sensors on the ground, at sea or in the air.

Copernicus Services

Copernicus is all about delivering products and services to manage and protect the environment and natural resources, and ensure civil security, e.g.:

• air-quality forecasting • flood warnings• early detection of drought and desertification • early warnings of severe weather• oil-spill detection and drift prediction• sea-water quality• crop analysis• forest monitoring• land-use change• food security and humanitarian

aid

• Precision: In a combined GPS-Galileo use (compared to GPS by itself) the higher number of satellites available to the user will offer higher precision. From most locations, six to eight Galileo satellites will be visible which, in combination with GPS signals, will allow positions to be determined up to within a few centimetres.

• Availability: The high number of satellites will also improve the availability of the signals in high-rise cities, where buildings can obstruct signals from satellites that are low on the horizon.

• Coverage: Galileo will also provide a better coverage at high latitudes than GPS, thanks to the location and inclination of the satellites. This will be particularly interesting for Northern Europe.

Trend topic: Crowd-Sourcing

ASIGN / GEO PICTURES: winner of ESA App Challenge 2012 – Crowdsourced, in-situ visual Copernicus validation. The smartphone app captures and sends reliably geo-tagged and time-stamped images to UNOSAT at CERN to verify radar images.

Cerberus: Copernicus Master 2012 – Crowdsourcing and eLearning platform• “serious game” in which participants can

mark cracks in ice, damaged power cables, areas of drought, and other anomalies on satellite images.

• Following verification, user input is converted into digital maps that can then be employed by governments and other interest groups.
