The Whys and Hows of ESL Classroom Podcasting
Scott Duarte
In using media in the classroom teachers have 2 choices.
A Passive approach where students merely listen.
or an Active approach where students actually talk.
A Passive approach where students merely watch.
or
an Active approach where students actually create.
“Students should take an active role in technology rather than a passive one.”
Celestin FreinetFreinet Movement
Research has shown seven
different styles of learning.

With the exception of solitary learning, videopodcasting maximizes the learning styles. And let’s face it, who really wants to be alone anyway?
STOP talking the talk
It’s time to Walk the Walk
To insure the birth of a successful course, preparations must be made.
4things
Nothing works right without the proper
Tools.
Nothing is accomplishedwithout the necessary
Time.
Nothing flows smoothly without
adequate
Organization.
Nothing gets done without discernible
Accountability.
Tools
Audio productionrequires very
little to create quality
assignments.
Higher quality videos
require
higher quality equipment.
If you don’t have the budget for equipment,
Beg.
If you know of others not using equipment,
Borrow.
If you know no one is looking,
Steal.
just kidding...
When it comes to educational funding, ask what your country can do for you.
Time
Audio productionrevolves around the students’ schedules.

Mental Take Out
Motivation
If students know their work can be seen by 1000’s of
people all over the world, they’ll want
to do a good job!
Student Choice.
When students choose the content that they create, they feel a greater sense of ownership in the work.
Sense of Accomplishment
From the ownership of the work, students gain a greater sense of pride.
When any of these 3 parts make up a lesson, you’re on target to creating
an educational activity that goes beyond the classroom.
Audio & Video Podcasting incorporates all three
concepts to hit the mark.
If you don’t believe me, ask the80 students who produced over 100 podcasts...
or better yet, ask the 55,000 people who have watchedthem.
