One of the most important items needed on cover letters, resumes and online profiles today is keywords. Wordle, an online tool for creating unique word clouds like the one below, helps you determine the right keywords for you.

What You’ll Need!

•Anywhere from one to five job descriptions for recently applied to jobs. You can copy these straight from Careerbuilder, Monster or the company website. (If you target several different job titles and have targeted resumes for each of them, you will want to run this process for each job title)

•Your resume, cover letter, Linkedin and other online profiles

•Wordle www.wordle.net

•Anywhere from 10-15 minutes to create the word cloud. Longer to incorporate the words into your documents

Lets Get Started

•Open www.wordle.net

•Click on Create your own

•Past all of the job descriptions in the box at the same time. I always include the description and skills section.

•Click Go•You may have to do some work on your lists. For example if each bullett of the job description starts with Maintain then that will come up as a keyword. Either copy the list into word and edit or just know that it probably isn’t really an important keyword to have all over your profile’s.

For this example I used HR Generalist job descriptions

What Keywords Stand Out?

Once you hit Go, it should be fairly easy to see what words stand out. For this example, the words employees, process, document, follow-up, enrollment and track all jump off the page. If I were applying for HR Generalist jobs, I would be sure to have these words included in my online profiles.

If you do not get results that help you determine keywords (no words stand out), try starting over with more or less job descriptions. You can also click layout/re-layout with current settings to produce a new cloud with the same words and see if that helps. Be careful though, it can be fun to play and you may end up wasting time!

Incorporate into every Job Search Document

Now that you have your words, the only thing left to do is plug them into your job search documents – cover letter, resume and all online profiles. Here are a few tips.

• Don’t overdo it. If document is a keyword and you put it in every line then that is going to hurt you more than help you.

•Make sure it makes sense. Do not use grammar that does not make sense just to incorporate a key word.

•Make sure it is factual. Do not make stuff up just because you need to fit a certain keyword in. Being untruthful about your skills and abilities is a huge mistake.

Complete and Review

Now that your keywords are incorporated into your job search documents you are ready to update any old documents that may be hanging out in cyber space. I would update any online profile, even on company websites as quickly as possible.

Finally, conduct this process every couple of months or so to make sure that you are still using the right keywords.

Happy Job Searching!
