1. Local Device e.g. Desktop, Laptop, Netbook, PDA, Games Console, Watch(?), Fridge(?)

2. Local Server e.g. Dell or IBM running Windows or Linux

3. Single SaaS (Software as a Service) e.g. SalesForce.com

4. Open Cloud e.g. TDM, ULCC

5. Corporate Cloud e.g. Windows Azure, Google Apps, Amazon EC2

= Choice with Trade-offs

(1) Your own Local Device

Positives

• You can work on the train! (No Broadband Required)

• High Performance

• “Tailorability”

• Very private, locally stored data

• Mobile augmented reality

Negatives

• Poor for Community Interaction / Collaboration

• Disincentive for corporate interoperability


(2) Local Servers Managed by IT Dept.


Positives

• Some Privacy but more interactivity

• Easy to monitor security and performance

• Easy to monitor user activity (re: Data Protection + e-Safety)



Negatives

• Not very eco-friendly

• Core versus fringe activity.

e.g. Would an FE College employ a construction department with and architect, civili engineer, construction worker etc.?

(3) Open Cloud / Shared Services / Open Source Software, Elastic Computing

Positives

• Eco-friendly - effectively managed server space in datacentres (VMs?)

• Still get local access to expertise / support

• Outsource supplier will offer training / configuration services in addition to managed hosting

• Rapid Deployment / ease of scaling

Negatives

• Trust: Perhaps it is easier to trust Microsoft?

• Price: More expensive than international data centre hosting?

Positives

• Big communities can boom better than (eg TDM Network Hubs)

• Marketing: You go out to the people (they don't come to you).



Negatives

• Privacy? Ownership of Data (eg Facebook)

• Exportability? If the service goes down, you lose everything (eg Pod-O-Matic)

• Misuse? Creepy Treehouse - Ref: e-Learning?
