Air pollution is not only an outdoor occurrence. Equally concerning is the poor quality of air inside your home and other enclosed spaces.

HEALTH EFFECTS

Poor indoor air quality poses several negative consequences to health, both short-term and long-term.

Short-term health effects include: eye and throat irritation, allergies, asthma, fatigue, headaches and congestion.

Long-term health effects include: rhinitis, respiratory disease, cancer and death.

There are many culprits who contribute to poor indoor air quality. Some of the most common sources of pollution include:

• Tobacco smoke

• Radon

• Mold

• Pesticides

• Household chemicals

There are ways you can decrease indoor air pollution and improve the air quality of your home or other indoor environment.

1) Regular vacuuming, mopping and cleaning will ensure that chemicals, dust and other allergens are reduced. Include walls, carpet and furniture in your cleaning routine.

2) Install and maintain a proper ventilation system.

Central heating and cooling systems, fans and duct systems are effective at ventilation.

Natural ventilation can occur by opening up windows and doors and letting fresh air indoors.

3) Ensure optimal humidity levels.

Mold and other allergens thrive in moisture, so keep the indoor humidity at approximately 30-50% so that it does not become a problem.

Use a dehumidifier to reduce moisture. Air conditioners can also help.

Exhaust fans should be used when cooking or bathing.

Fix leaks right away.

4) Create a smoke-free home.

One of the largest constituents of indoor air pollution is tobacco smoke. With over 4000 chemicals, cigarette smoke is responsible for serious health concerns.

Proper ventilation can reduce the amount of smoke present in your home but it will not be nearly as effective as creating a smoke-free environment.
