Abstract

We were assigned to identify emerging technologies relevant to medical

librarians, and to create a methodology that would support ongoing efforts to

support that goal. The leading thinktanks in emerging technologies either lack a

replicable methodology for identifying these, or do not share that methodology.

There are a number of research articles which review scraping of various

information sources for this purpose (eg. patent literature or technical reports)

and for specific types of technologies (eg. nanotechnology or 3d printing). Our

goal is to create a replicable and customizable methodology for identifying

emerging technologies through existing readily accessible information sources,

and to make it available in an open and transparent way for the use of others.

Our Assignment

The Medical Library Association initiated a large systematic review project to assess the level of evidence available to support the profession and practice of medical librarianship in several very important questions. Team 6 has been assigned to explore this topic:

The explosion of information, expanding of technology (especially mobile technology), and complexity of healthcare environment present medical librarians and medical libraries opportunities and challenges. To live up with the opportunities and challenges, what kinds of skill sets or information structure do medical librarians or medical libraries are required to have or acquire so as to be strong partners or contributors of continuing effectiveness to the changing environment?

Consensus Building, Part 1: MeSH Inclusion/ Exclusion Criteria

Team members reviewed & suggested terms. Rest of team suggested additions. Team tested each term during meetings, discussed options, made consensus determination for each term.

Consensus Building, Part 2: Emerging

Four team members tested base search strategy, revised according to personal style & preferences. Each search variant was run, and results were compared. These were laid out in spreadsheet with terms organized alphabetically. Discussed in team meetings, leading to consensus decisions for each term.
