Audience To complete this survey, respondents were required to be an IT supervisor or higher title that reports indirectly to the top IT executive at an organization that has a critical mass of employees who require access to graphics applications semi-monthly.

METHODOLOGY & RESEARCH OBJECTIVES

The purpose of this survey is to better understand user experiences and challenges with demanding graphics applications in use today, in addition to deployment plans for virtualized graphics solutions. The survey explores the expected and experienced benefits of virtualized graphics solutions, as well as primary barriers to deployment.

KEY FINDINGS• Four in ten respondents (40%) report their organizations have deployed

desktop virtualization, while another 24% have deployment plans over the next 1-2 years.

• The majority of respondents (80%) agree that the long cycle time to load and save large graphic data sets impedes productivity. Among those who agree that long cycle times impede productivity, more than one third (35%) report it takes an hour or more to load or save a large graphic data set.

• Less than half (42%) rate the user experience of their organizations’ graphics applications as excellent or very good. The most important potential capabilities that respondents are looking for in a graphics application include improved security/disaster recovery (69% rating critical/very important), shortened load time (67%) and graphics acceleration (63%).

• Just under one-quarter of respondents’ organizations (24%) have deployed a virtualized graphics solution, while 19% have deployment plans in the next 1-2 years. Another 22%, while they have no firm plans, have an interest in virtualizing their workstation or graphics user environment.

• The benefits that are most frequently expected to result from virtualization of workstations or graphics user environments are the same benefits that are most likely to have been realized by those who have previously deployed – improved productivity, improved mobility and better resource efficiency.

• The top challenge to deploying a virtualized workstation or graphics user environment is cost (51%). Lack of time/resources is also a barrier at 4 in 10 respondent organizations.

Task worker – Task workers and administrative workers perform repetitive tasks within a small set of applications, usually at a stationary computer. The applications are usually not as CPU- and memory-intensive as the applications used by knowledge workers. Task workers include call center analysts, retail employees, warehouse worker , and so on.

Knowledge worker – Knowledge workers' daily tasks include accessing the Internet, using email, and creating complex documents, presentations, and spreadsheets. Knowledge workers include accountants, sales managers, marketing research analysts, and so on.

Power user – Power users include application developers and people who use graphics-intensive applications

Designer/Engineer – Designers and engineers develop products using 3D design and visualization software. The applications they use require high performance graphics acceleration.

The majority of respondents (80%) agree that the long cycle time to load and save large graphic data sets impedes productivity. There is also agreement that productivity could be enhanced if

designers and engineers could work remotely.

A WORLD OF INSIGHTS

Long cycle time to load and save large graphic data sets impedes productivity

The ability for designers/engineers to work remotely would greatly enhance productivity

Designs sitting on local storage pose a security as well as disaster recovery risk

Given the large file size, it is difficult to collabo-rate on graphic design with colleagues that are

geographically dispersed

The ability to work on graphics on a tablet mobile device would bolster productivity
