3. The Internet of things

4. Semantic web

1.1 - The end of the PC age

• @Home: PC – TV integration

• @Office: Surface Desktops

• @Elsewhere: Next Generation Smartphones 1,5 GHz Quadcore

HD/Bluray output

Page 4: Internet trends and ICT knowledge necessary in the next years

1.2 - The end of the PC age

• Ecosystem based on OS platform + Market applications

• Revenue sharing between OS platform providers and small developers

• AppStore: 300.000+ -> 82,7% Revenues• Android : 150.000+ -> 5,0 % Revenues

• Everybody trying to copy this model now; anyway the space will be only for two or three players

Page 5: Internet trends and ICT knowledge necessary in the next years

• Hardware (server, storage, printers)

• Operating System (virtualization)

• Application (SaaS)

• Desktop Virtualization

• and … content

2.1 – Everything in the cloud

Page 6: Internet trends and ICT knowledge necessary in the next years

• ICT Job market implications

• Definite fall of DRM, copyright?

• Final model: mix of private/public cloud

2.2 – Everything in the cloud

3.1 – The Internet of Things

• Ubiquitous wireless connection with all the objects

• M2M – Smart Grids (50 billion connected devices by 2020)

• Augmented reality (info view, 3D, advertising)

Page 8: Internet trends and ICT knowledge necessary in the next years

3.2 – The Internet of ThingsWhile it may result easy receiving and mapping objects with an onboard GPS transponder ...

…it is less easy catching and transmitting analogical data from objects without power supply …

Page 9: Internet trends and ICT knowledge necessary in the next years

3.3 – The Internet of Things

Page 10: Internet trends and ICT knowledge necessary in the next years

3.4 - The Internet of Things

Page 11: Internet trends and ICT knowledge necessary in the next years

4.1 - Semantic Web• Most announced and …

slowest technology

• Driven by academic research rather than real business applications

• Top down vs. Bottom Up approach

• Definition of too complex models

Page 12: Internet trends and ICT knowledge necessary in the next years

4.2 - Semantic Web

So, what’s happening?

• Several search engines claiming to be semantic

• Mix of “good enough” simple standards + proprietary solutions

• Google now announcing to slightly modify its algorithms adding “semantics” -> natural language search, multiple formats results

Fights between:

• Telco vs. Over The Top

• Incumbents vs. OLO

• Mobile vs. Fixed access

5.1 – The Bandwidth War

vs.

vs.

FTTH

Page 14: Internet trends and ICT knowledge necessary in the next years

5.2 – The Bandwidth WarInternet data consumption increased of 215% in the past 3 years, mainly due to video streaming exponential growth.Possible scenarios: •Pay (fast) vs. Public (slow) Internet•Possible differentiated content access depending on Fixed or Mobile connection availability – Speed trends:–VDSL2:100 Mb dwnl (500 m FO, 30 Mhz)–GPON: 2,5 Gbit (shared among 64 users)–Point-Point: 1 Gb (x each user)–LTE 4G: 21 - 42 Mb -> 100 Mb peak

5.3 – The Bandwidth War

Telco ISP

Huge investments necessary for the networks will decrease the EBIT and increase the debt of the incumbent ISP

Some OTT (with high EBIT) could buy some incumbent(with high debt)

Page 16: Internet trends and ICT knowledge necessary in the next years

• Mobile Phone = Wireless Digital Wallet

• Near Field Communication - Identity certified by SIM

• Location based added services (recommendation/discounts)

5.4 – Next possible fight: Telco vs. Bank

Page 17: Internet trends and ICT knowledge necessary in the next years

6.1 – A new way of coding & working

• Coworking - Crowdsourcing - Open Source coding - BarCamp

• Large use of Mashups and Web Services

• SDK: Cocoa, Android (Google)• Distributed virtual community

based on reputation and trust• Handicraft model

iOSCocoa

6.2 – A new way of coding & working

Page 19: Internet trends and ICT knowledge necessary in the next years

7.1 – A new way to watch the content

• Broadcast -> On-Demand• Personalized TV program based

on your preferences• Recommendation advertising• Facebook Watch, Social

content sharing

9 - Conclusion

• Period of epochal changes in all the ICT sectors

• End of PC age, end of “Company for the Life” job

• Be part of the new “eco-systems”

• Social coding – Co-working

• More social and environmental responsibility in the business models
