The last 12 months have shown dramatic changes in the radio market with the latest JNLR results showing that listeners continue to move from national to local/regional radio, which now has a 46% market share. One of the biggest issues that has faced radio in the last 12 months is the reduction in listeners, with the number of adults listening dropping from 87% to 85%. There are a number of issues driving this: while emigration and unemployment are obvious drivers, so too are shorter commuting times, the growth of the iPod generation and the fact that the JNLR figures do not accurately log listeners from alternative platforms such as online streaming. RTE Radio 1 has seen some strong book on book increases, with Morning Ireland up 23,000 listeners and Mary Wilson gaining a further 10,000. 2FM’s Ryan Tubridy has seen his first figures for his new mid morning show, which are 26% lower than the average quarter hour being delivered by Gerry Ryan 12 months ago. While many will say this is a weak return, it should be noted that this is a new show, with new content and will take time to find its feet. There is no doubt that Ray D'Arcy holds the top spot amongst the mid morning shows, delivering 219,000 listeners daily. However it has been another tough book for Dempsey, with a further loss of 10,000 listeners and while he retains his number two spot, behind Morning Ireland, this position is far from secure. There has been minimal movement in the market share in Dublin, with Radio 1 still the dominant station. 98FM holds top spot among local stations with a 11.6% share of all adults. FM104 is the preferred choice for 15-34 year olds with 21.5%, while Spin continues its dominance of the 15-24 category with a growing 36.3%. Read more here. Google This! During the week, Google paid homage to Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton and to Thomas Edison, with search volume rising accordingly. Incidentally, Edison didn’t invent the lightbulb. It was a Newcastle pharmacist called Swan the year before - who had an impressive head for science, but not so much for PR or patent stealing... It would seem that romantic Ireland is not dead and gone, as the past seven days saw many of us ‘googling’ some romantic valentine’s poems for our significant others. In entertainment, Jedward have been searched by fans and non-fans alike as they’re set to be our Eurovision entrants. Knowing the political minefield that is Eurovision points system, we hope they don’t take ”Ireland, nil points” too personally. However nobody can beat the excitement that was created by Lady Gaga online, in anticipation of her new single ‘Born this Way’. An avid user of Twitter and Facebook, Lady Gaga knows how to use social media to promote a brand.

Mindshare analyses the search volume within Ireland to establish patterns and trends of information people are searching for over certain time periods.

I’m Head of Radio here in Mindshare. Radio is a very important part of Irish life and of our Irish oral culture.I book in campaigns, competitions and sponsorships for our clients. I also keep an eye on all the latest data (such as that which appears in the JNLR blog post this week).

What media developments are you keeping an eye on?

The inevitable alliance between social media and TV - making TV a more social experience. It seems it is only a matter of time before everyone is updating their Facebook statuses during real time broadcasts all from one platform!   What's your favorite recent campaign?

The Lotto ‘Rainbow’ ad always puts a smile on my face, but I have to admit Lynx’s recent ‘Fallen Angles’ gets my vote!

TV viewing this week has not changed too much from

last week. However, news and political coverage is

receiving a lot of attention in lieu of the upcoming

general election obviously.

The Frontline Leader’s DebateMost people watching television on Tuesday evening (15th of February), tuned into the Leader’s Debate on RTE’s The Frontline. Of all those watching television between 9.35PM and 11.05PM, 60% were following the debate. The 90 minute broadcast was watched by an average of 961,000 people - the highest rating for a programme so far this year.

The audience numbers peaked at one million at 10PM and a total of 1.5 million tuned in at some stage.

The final Leader’s Debate will be on RTE next Tuesday, 22nd of February when the leaders of FF, FG and Labour will be in the Prime Time studio for a programme presented by Miriam O’Callaghan. It will broadcast at 9.35PM on RTE One.
