Why large and small Companies, and the military are using Bio-Remediation!• ISO 14001 is all about decreasing the

amount of energy and chemicals being used in an organization. • The USDA has a catalog of Bio-

Preferred products. • http://

www.biopreferred.gov/bioPreferredCatalog/faces/jsp/catalogLanding.jsp• The goal is to use Bio-based,

Renewable resources for cleaning hydrocarbons No need for harsh chemicals • It works

What is bio-remediation?

• The easiest way to think about bio-remediation although they are microbes instead of ants and billions of them.

Page 5: New England Public Works presentation on bio-remediation September 2013

How does it work?

• The microbes eat the hydrocarbons such as oil, gasoline, lubricating fluid, hydraulic fluid, diesel fuel, …. And create water and carbon dioxide.

Page 6: New England Public Works presentation on bio-remediation September 2013

Where do the Microbes come from?

The products are made basically with pond scum, which is made up of microbes. This is over simplified, we add bacteria and other nutrients depending on the specification of the problem. The EPA in response to the BP oil spill in The Gulf of Mexico said the microbes will take care of the oil. The only failure is the EPA did insist not on Bio-remedial products to increase the rate of removing the oil. We are still seeing the oil in the Gulf.

ISO 14001

• SO 14001:2004 • ISO 14001:2004 sets out the criteria for an environmental management system and can be

certified to. It does not state requirements for environmental performance, but maps out a framework that a company or organization can follow to set up an effective environmental management system. It can be used by any organization regardless of its activity or sector. Using ISO 14001:2004 can provide assurance to company management and employees as well as external stakeholders that environmental impact is being measured and improved.

• The benefits of using ISO 14001:2004 can include:• Reduced cost of waste management• Savings in consumption of energy and materials• Lower distribution costs• Improved corporate image among regulators, customers and the public
