INTRODUCTIONo The “Nokia Morph” is a theoretical future device based on

NANOTECHNOLOGY that might enable future communication devices.

o Morph also demonstrates how future mobile devices might be stretchable, flexible, transparent and self cleaning.

HISTORYo The concept of NOKIA MORPH has been

introduced to the global world at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) as part of the "Design and the Elastic Mind" exhibition.

o The concept emerged through collaboration between Nokia Research Center and Cambridge University Nanoscience Center in the UK.

NANOTECHNOLOGY

NANOTECHNOLOGY means “The science, engineering and technology related to the understanding and control of matter at the length scale of approximately 1 to 100 nanometers”.

NANOTECHNOLOGY allows control of physical properties of nanostructures and devices with single molecule precision.

1. SENSINGo Observe our local environment that includes analyzing pollutions,

temperature etc. o “Nanosensors” construct a complete awareness of the user context – both

personal and environmental enabling an appropriate and intelligent response.

o In order to improve sensor and signal processing characteristics Nokia introduced NanoWire Lithography (NWL) process that fabricates a large area and self aligned 3D architectures.

2. HAPTIC SURFACEo Touch sensitive and responsive [haptic] surface of NOKIA morph is provided

by large area sensing surfaces using piezoelectric nanowire arrays.

o “ZnO” nanowires are used to produce the piezoelectric nanowire arrays.o Buttons on the device surface are real 3D forms.

3. SELF CLEANINGo The surface of morph is superhydrophobic that makes it extremely dirt

repellent.o Nanostructured surface known as nanoflowers that naturally repel water,

dirt and even finger-prints is used here.o Double roughening of a hydrophobic surface, on the submicron and

nanometer scale, creates superhydrophobicity.

4. ADVANCED POWER SOURCESo Polymer CNT composites with controlled conduction, nanotube enhanced

supercapacitors and nano composite solar cells etc acts as the power sources.o Energy harvesting from RF using wideband antennas and using nano electro

mechanical (NEM) method.

o “NANOGRASS” is used for harvesting solar power.o Microwatt level energy harvesting from waste energy in the air.o NOKIA developed a full solid state flexible DYE SENSITIZED SOLAR CELL (DSSC)

using ZnO Nanostructures which act as photovoltaic for this purpose.

5. STRETCHABLE ELECTRONICSo The nanoscale structure of the electronics enables stretching.o Stretchable electronics structure to allow device form factors.o Nanoscale internal structures controls the elasticity.

STRENGTH OF SPIDER SILKo A nanoscale mesh of fibers similar to spider silk controls the stretching when

device is folded.o Fibril proteins are woven into a three dimensional mesh that reinforces thin elastic

structures.

6. TRANSPARENT ELECTRONICSo The whole electronic circuit inside NOKIA morph is entirely transparent.o Nanoscale electronics becomes invisible to the human eye.

TRRAMo TRRAM developed by KAIST is the major platform for the transparent

electronics concept of morph.o By integrating TRRAM device with other transparent electronic

components a total see through embedded electronic system could be developed.

o TRRAM records data by changing the resistance of a metal oxide film known as Resistive RAM.

CONCLUSIONo According to the developers, using nanotechnology can lead to low cost

manufacturing solutions as well as adjustable, empowering devices, bringing us new, versatile possibilities.

o These mobile devices will be flexible, stretchable and shape changing, so that they can be easily integrated in our everyday routines without special adjustments on our part.
