What is OpenStack?

• It’s an Open Source “Cloud Operating System”

• Invented by Rackspace and NASA

• OpenStack Foundation created in 2012

• Allows you to build cloud platforms for network,

storage, and compute applications

• Runs on standardized hardware

• Has a large community of supporters and

programmers

Advantages of Open Source

• Agility (app development and deployment)

• Control (you control your own code)

• Open (lack of vendor lock-in)

• Leverage the community of programmers

• Transparency

OpenStack & SDN

• Software Defined Networking (SDN) is a similar

open concept in the networking market

• Open source code

• Open platforms

• Disaggregation of software and hardware

• Agility & Control (ACOLT)

• APIs can connect OpenStack environment to

SDN environments

The Future of Cloud Infrastructure

• Hardware and software will be separated or

“disaggregated”

• Apps and data will be highly distributed

• Open will rule

• Analytics tools will be used to drive integration of

network, storage, and compute

• Increased automation, based on analytics

• Proprietary platforms are dying
