Negawatt

Negawatt power is a theoretical unit of power representing an amount of energy (measured in Watts) saved. Energy is saved by either increased efficiency or reduced energy consumption; the conserved energy is a "negawatt".

The concept of a negawatt is simply a measure of power that is not used. Negawatts are a form of encouragement to motivate consumers to conserve energy.

ICT Energy consumption Facts ICT is responsible for 5 %–

10% total electricity consumption

In administrative industries (Governments,

Banks etc.) ICT can account for up to 75% of all energy consumption

3 -5 % of total world electricity consumption is based on software driven

devices

Datacenters are one of the fastest growing consumers of energy.

Most of the IT Departments are not

responsible for electricity bill

In US Only 10-15 more power plants needed by

2011 to keep up with data center power

consumption

ICT GHG emission facts

ICT i s globally responsible for 3% of GHG emissions and it is going to grow to 6%

by 2020

One search on popular search engine can

produce 7gCO2

One e-mail message can produce 0.3 g CO2

All spam messages (183 B per day) will produce 55000 tons

CO2 per day

Data Center (in)efficiency

Idle x86 servers consume

between 30% - 40% of

maximum (rated) power.

10% of 4.4 million servers

around the globe are unused

A majority of physical server operate at 4%

average utilization

Most servers operate at 5 -15% of their

total load

How to reduce infrastructure cost

Reduce Cost

• Analyze actual workload

• Eliminate unnecessary components

• Operate Servers at higher temperature

• Use higher efficiency power and cooling

• Chiller-less design

• Optimize for performance/watt/$

• Drive server consolidation with virtualization

• Leverage advanced power management technology
