Speaking of geographic location. This is a very significant part of the Cynefin system for people who like mapsGeoreferencingQuite simple really, the orange points on the left, on the tithe map, need to correspond to the other orange spots on the right on the modern OS map.7

This is one very interesting character we found among the tithe documents, the leader of the first Rebecca Riot, Twm Carnabwth, living in a Ty Unnos.Note that he has an ownership claim on the house, hes listed on left hand column as well. Worth thinking about.11

These tolls are all over Wales. They were arguably more of a big deal out in the West. This is the most famous tollgate of them all, Efailwen on the Carmarthenshire Pembrokeshire border. Didnt last very long, about three days, so obviously didnt make it onto the map of the area.12

Theres more to it than just georeferencing. We need to clip the maps so that we only see the geographical information. This is in order to create a unified map of Wales. We cut out the parish shapes, which often follow rivers. It looks like this, you can add and move little blue dots which define the shape of the outline.28

This is an example of how it works. Three maps in the correct location, but were not much wiser, they get in each others way.29

When the maps are clipped you can see that they fit just like a jigsaw

30

We didnt stop there of course, heres all of the northern part of Ceredigion, and a few bits of Montgomeryshire and Merionethshire as well.31

This is the same idea in the heads of the Valleys, the industrialised area which was the heartland of the Chartists.32

Ar system Cynefin gallwn hefyd gymharur mapiau gyda map OS cynnar o droad y ganrif, map wedi ei sganio gan Llyfrgell Genedlaethol yr Alban. Fel y gwelwch mae pentref Capel Celyn iw weld yn glir ar hwnnw

Sylwch, dywr pentref Capel Celyn ddim yn amlwg ar y map degwm. Fem trawodd wrth wneud y gwaith hwn, roedd pentref Capel Celyn yn fychan nid yn unig o ran maint ond hefyd o ran amser, ac eto chwaraeodd ran eithriadol o amlwg ac arwyddocaol yn hanes Cymru

36

Dymar ddau fap cuddion rhannol gan fap modern yn dangos pa dir sydd o dan y dwr.

37

Dyma rai or caeau sydd wedi eu cofnodi o dan y dwr. Dim syndod mai un or caeau sydd ddyfnaf o dan y dwr ydy cae isa
