Translation Memory (or TM) is a database tool that allows you to save translations and recycle previously translated segments/units for future use.

What Is It?

Medicare is health insurance for people age 65 or older, under age 65 with certain disabilities, and any age with permanent kidney failure (called End-Stage Renal Disease or ESRD).

What Is It?


1. The program breaks new source text into segments

2. Each new source segment is checked against the TM

3. If it is an exact match, the program will offer the translator the matching translation from the TM

4. The translator can accept it as-is, or make any edits

5. All the translator’s work can then be added to the TM

When TM Doesn't Work Well and Why

•Not all file types work well

•Small seemingly insignificant changes prevent match

•Document designer inserts a line break mid-sentence

•Should translate message of the text, not always

Ways to Boost Your Match Rate

Write in controlled English and minimize:

•Edits•Changes to terms•Changes to formatting (moving paragraph to bullets)•Changes to punctuation, gender, tenses, etc.


Ownership of Your Translation Memory

• You should make sure you have either specific language to this or a standard “ownership of work” term in your contract.

• Translation Memory, in almost all cases, can be exported to a standard format that any vendor can use.

• Ask for a copy of it quarterly and maintain updates.
