Smarter Philippines: the DOST’s Technology- based Inclusive Growth Program

DOST Secretary Mario Montejo

Launches Smarter Philippines

Program in Davao City, Feb. 20, 2013

Smarter Philippinesis the DOST’s technology-based

inclusive growth program.

It has 6 categories of national-level

programs…

…and two categories of

geographically-based programs.

DOTC estimates that traffic congestion

in Manila alone costs P140B. Losses

include:

- cost of fuel wasted on slow moving

traffic;

- lost productivity of workers stuck in

traffic jams; and

- Increased stress on vehicles running

low on gear.

Air pollution results in 2000 deaths each year and causes US1.5 Billion

in lost wages, medical treatment in Manila, Cebu, Baguio, and Davao.

China prepares for smart city construction boom

China has reportedly approved 193 trial

cities to develop into “smart cities”

The smart city program,

initiated last November, is part

of the country's efforts to

explore ways to foster a new

type of urbanization.

Smarter Cities can be the perfect “Living Labs”

to scientifically apply DOST’s Smarter Philippines

innovations, and thereby attract investments.
