Times have Changed• Technology is being used in the

classrooms more and more these days.

• Technology is important because… • It meets the needs of different

kinds of learners• It is efficient• It is engaging

How do we incorporate technology into the classroom?

Technology Use

• According to the article, “Computers as Mindtools for Engaging Learners in Critical Thinking,” technology use is described as when it is used for the sole purpose of taking information and instruction or when it asks as a “tutor” (Jonassen, 1998).

Technology Integration

• The same article explains technology integration as “…knowledge construction tools that students learn with, not from” (Jonassen, 1998).

• In other words, the students use technology in order to analyze and gain further insight.

The Main Difference• The integration of technology is referred to in the

article mentioned previously as a partnership with the computer.

• In contrast, simply using technology focuses on “…the effects of technology versus the effect with computer technology” (Jonassen, 1998).

• Thus, using computers may cause you to complete a task…but integrating computers can help students to learn and discover new things.

More on Differences

Using Technology

• The computer does the learning for the student.

• Reproduction of work or regurgitation of facts

Integrating Technology

• Using the tools around you as an aid in order to solve problems independently

• Construction of knowledge

• Tools for interpreting and organizing information

Examples of Using Technology

•Games such as “Oregon Trail.” The students are simply clicking a mouse. What are they learning from virtually shooting buffalo?•Sitting a computer for…

•Non-interactive tutorials•Any activity that requires a student clicking and typing without thinking things through•Mindlessly plugging numbers into a spreadsheet

Examples of Integrating Technology

(seriousnerd.wordpress.com)

• Interactive whiteboards: capture what is on the computer screen and display in on a whiteboard; the board can be manipulated and written on with different tools and then saved to the computer

•Document cameras: similar to that above in the sense that it can be saved to a computer but it can also show three dimensional objects

•Podcasting: informational lectures and influential people can be heard and seen through and ipod

More Examples of Integrating Technology

•Google Earth: locating various areas on the globe and virtually being able to see them

•Social networking: (Instant messaging) stay in communication with classmates and teachers

•Blogging: post various thoughts and reflections online as well as looking up the reflections of other people

The Correct Choice• Integrating technology into the classroom, as

opposed to solely using technology in the classroom is a more effective way of teaching.

• Students will be more engaged in learning and they will also be forced to deeply analyze and think critically.

Meaningful Learning• Every teacher wants their students to have a rich

learning experience with meaningful learning.• According to a PowerPoint regarding the concept of

meaningful learning,

“Meaningful learning requires learners who are actively engaged in a meaningful task in which they manipulate objects and parameters of the environments they are working in” (Unknown).
