2nd Grade Science
GPS S2L1. Students will investigate the life cycles of different living organisms.
Objectives
Students will learn the four stages of a butterfly’s life cycle:
• The First Stage: The Egg
• The Second Stage: The Larva (Caterpillar)
• The Third Stage: Pupa (Chrysalis)
• The Fourth Stage: Adult Butterfly

Vocabulary
Egg- A round or oval mass from which young animals hatch.
Larva- The stage early in an insect’s life when it looks like a worm.
Pupa- A stage in the lifecycle of certain insects when the larva is changing into an adult.
Chrysalis- The inactive stage in the development of a butterfly or moth during which the larva is enclosed in a tough case from which a fully developed adult eventually emerges.
Adult- A fully grown person, animal or plant.
Activities

This is an example of a SmartBoard activity that can be used in this lesson. Students will drag the picture to the matching word.
Assessment
• To assess the students over the Life Cycle of a Butterfly, I would get them to draw a picture of the steps in order and ask them to explain it to me. The activity would be similar to the one below.
