Transmedia Gaming is the phenomenon of console gaming evolving into a more connected experience.

○ This does not mean that gaming is no longer taking place on game consoles; it means that gaming is now using other forms of media and technology to better engage the audience.

What Is Transmedia Gaming?

Types of Transmedia Gaming: The Beginning● Console Multiplayer Gaming

○ What started as just playing Mario Kart with 2 or 3 of your friends on your Gamecube, or split screen racing on your Xbox, has now been multiplied to having several hundred of your friends, and strangers alike occupy a single online server.

● MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game)○ With World of Warcraft being one of the oldest and most successful

MMO’s, it may not be as graphically ahead as console gaming, but it’s sense of community is what a lot of developers are now using as an example of future gaming.

Types of Transmedia Gaming: The Present● Xbox Kinect & Playstation Move

○ Ditch the controller and use your body to navigate through a game instead. Aimed to become more submerged within a game.

● Many gamers argue this isn’t necessary, and that with a

strong engaging storyline, the ability to create and mold

your own character (RPGs), is enough to immerse yourself within a game.

Types of Transmedia Gaming: The Present● Walkthroughs

○ One of the most interesting things that has come out of Transmedia Gaming is consumer created game walkthroughs.

● Gamers have taken game guides into their own hands by either typing out or uploading videos on the internet of their own gameplay. So, if you’re stuck on a quest, chances are, someone uploaded a video on Youtube of how to get through it successfully.

○ Another development that has grown out of Transmedia Gaming is live streams. Any and all gaming events- whether it is corporately large like E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo), or smaller, local and geared towards specific games like Fighting Game Tournaments, chances are, someone is streaming it live online.

○ Twitch.tv and MLG.tv are a few streams you can watch a varity of gaming streams.

● With the ability to “mash up” the ways in which we engage in gaming, whether that be through tweeting or instagramming screenshots of our game play, or creating and uploading game reviews on Youtube, this interconnectivity and engagement with others on the internet has jump started a large online community.

● Not only has this built strong communities, friendships and given us our own ability to all be journalists, the direction gaming is going in has also opened new pathways whether that be career oriented or not, to engage on deeper levels with each other, and with the content itself, making gaming as we know, never the same again.
