This section is a draft for the instructional tutorial on Video Post Production in Blender Workshop for Graduate Students in the Teacher Education program. The hands-on workshop will focus on how-to import clips into Blender's video editor; how-to trim/edit; fade-in & out; import graphics; create 3D titles; work with audio; export your project; and then uploading to YouTube, Teacher Tube and School Tube. Currently, working on the audio component of the workshop which will include importing a file created in Audacity.

Create 3D Text in Blender -

Using the same parameters* that youset-up for your video project, go to yourDEFAULT interface. You may need toLOAD FACTORY SETTINGS to see theoriginal default screen.You should see a 3D Cube.

After you set up your screen, you'llwant to view the cube via a camera. Useyour numberpad on your keyboard toaccess the different camera point-of-views.

Press "0" to look through the maincamera. Numbers 1 - 8 will give yodifferent perspectives while "0" is thedefault.

To begin, click the Cube to select.

Press DELETE on your keyboard. Thenclick, DELETE.

Your space is now ready for text.DRAFTDRAFT

Now, at the top of your screen, click:ADD > TEXT

The default text will appear.

Now to rotate the default text so it facesyour camera, click the ROTATE iconlocated at the bottom of the screen.

The controls to rotate your text willappear on screen. Each color representsa different axis so you can position thetext as you see fit.

Now to edit the default text, select the EDITMODE from the menu. This will bring upthe cursor which allows you to type.

This is your opportunity to type thetext you need for your project.

Make sure to select the arrow.Second from the left.

To change the FONTS, note the panelto the right of your screen. The "F"stands for FONT.

Whatever your text is on screen, re-typeit in this window.DRAFT

Scroll down to the FONT section andbrowse for the FONT of your choice byclicking on the folder icon.

As soon as you select the FONT, yourtext will change. It will then need to beadjusted. In the example below, charactersthat appear in the dark area will never beseen by the camera.

To adjust your text, first selectOBJECT MODE. Then grab one of thethree arrows and move your text to theproper position.DRAFT

With your text in position, it can nowbe seen by your camera. This means,your viewers will see the entire text as itwill appear in your video.

Now lets bring the text from 2D to 3Dby using the EXTRUDE control - locatedin the right-hand panel above FONT.

Play with the depth of the EXTRUDE,but keep in mind that it will still need tobe legible. DRAFTDRAFT

Let's give the text some color. Clickon the MATERIAL icon to active thepanel you see on the right.

Click on DIFFUSE to access theColor Palette where you'll be able toselect the color of your choice.

The Color Palette is where you selectthe color for your text.DRAFTDRAFT

Now that we have added color to thetext, let's ADD a light source. From themenu, there are five choices: Point, Sun,Spot, Hemi, and Area.

Light sources help your text stand out.

Here is a side view of the "workshop" textwith one camera (on the right) and threelight sources. To acheive this view, press "1"on your numberpad. To return to camera,press, "0".

Each item within your compositioncan be access and manipulated via thelist of items on the right-hand side ofyour screen. To begin, click on an item.In this example, I have clicked on one ofthe "Spot" lights.

Once selected, you'll instantly see whereyou're light is in relation to your text. Thelite-grey area is what your camera's view,while the dark areas will not be seen byviewers.

Use your numberpad to change yourpoint-of-view (POV) to give you a betterunderstanding on where your lights arepositioned. This will also help you tobetter position your text.

Here is the 3D text as it rendered outfrom Blender. You can toggle back andforth between a Rendered view and theRaw view by pressing F12 for Renderand ESC to go back to the Raw view tocontinue working. We'll discussRENDERING later on in this workshop.

For now, let's save this file asTITLE.blend. We'll come back to this fileto do some light animation.

You'll find tools and properties foreach item in your composition can beadjusted and tweeked from the promptson the right of your screen. In thisexample, since SPOT [light] was selected,these are the prompts needed in order toget the desired appeance and effect.
