WATER FILTRATION KIT
- WATER FILTRATION
PROCESS
Water treatment process can be well understood if you follow a drop of
water through all the stages in the treatment process. There are
different methods of purifying water depending on the desired level of
purity and the scale of production. There are also simple water
filtration kits available in the market that you can use at home.
Ground water is water that is found under the ground. It requires less
purification than water coming from rivers, stream or lakes. For you to
understand the water treatment process, you have to stop at each
stage. Then, analyse the chemicals that are use and know their
importance to the process.
Coagulation is the stage where physical dirt and other particles that
are suspended in the water are removed. There are chemicals that are
added to the water. They include alum and will form sticky particles
(floc) that will attract dirt particles present in water. This combination
becomes heavy and sinks to the bottom of the sink.
The flocculated water will then flow to a primary basin or clarifier. It is
in this stage that the heavy particles formed after alum is added. They
will then settle at the bottom of the basin, allowing clarified water to
proceed to the next stages. The floc-particles will form sludge at the
bottom of the clarifier and they are frequently cleaned off.
After sedimentation, the water enters into the filtration stage. Water
will pass through filters which are made from sand layers, charcoal
and gravel. These materials will help in the removing of even smaller
particles that are present in the water. The filters can also be called
rapid-gravity filters.
The next stage is disinfection. Some chlorine is added as the main
disinfectant agent. Chlorine kills bacteria and other microorganisms
that may be present in the water. These bacteria and
microorganisms can cause harm if left untreated. There are other
disinfection methods that can be used, but chlorine is the most
preferred.
After going through all these stages, the water is now confirmed as
safe to be consumed. It is then stored awaiting its use. Purified water
can be stored in closed tanks and allows disinfection to take place.
From here, the water is safe to be piped to homes and other firms
that may need to use water.
This is the most basic water treatment process that can be applied. It
is also what your water filtration kit uses. There might be some
changes in the process due to the size and desired quality. However,
the process remains very close to the one described above.
