Outline• Overview of the Weightless SIG secondment

• Activities conducted during the secondment

• The workshop organised

• Further work resulted

3

Overview of the Weightless SIG secondment

• Objectives:

To explore how academic research can be standardised, especially in Machine-to-Machine (M2M) and Internet of Things (IoT) research areas.

To increase interactions among academics, standard bodies and industry.

• Supported by RCUK Digital Economy Theme - IT as a Utility Network (ITaau)+, Call for Secondment (Call 2)

• Started from January in 2014 to be completed in July 2014

Weightless SIG standard• Billions of M2M devices are expected to be connected, and a major

portion of them are through wireless connections. • Weightless SIG provides the scope to realise tens of billions of

connected devices worldwide overcoming the traditional problems associated with current wireless standards - capacity, cost, power consumption and coverage.

• It is a new bespoke technology optimised for M2M that can become the global standard. Low cost hardware and service. Excellent coverage Ultra low-power operations Secure and guaranteed message delivery

• Weightless Special Interest Group (SIG) was formed in late 2012, and 1st

Weightless technical specification was released in April 2013.• Over 1600 industry members to date.

5

From antenna perspectives to enhance M2M coverage

• We designed a novel antenna to replace an exiting one.• Experiments integrating a M2M radio unit with antennas were carried out.

1000 packages were sent at different transmission (Tx) power levels.

Tx Power (dBm) Original antenna New antenna

‐30 1000 1000

‐35 998 1000

‐40 852 1000

TV White Space Testbed with Robust Spectrum Sensing Algorithms for M2M Communications (Tic-tac)

Motivations: • 50 billions Machine-to-Machine (M2M) devices to be connected,

ranging from smart grid, smart meters, to cars, to traffic lights, etc.• White space spectrum provides a new opportunity as it is

plentiful, free, harmonised world-wide and has excellent propagation.

• Weightless communication system required for low cost, long battery life and vast coverage.

Funded by EPSRC

8

Spectrum sensingGeo-location database

Objectives: • To develop a real-time TV white space testbed.• To develop robust sensing algorithms for master white space devices (WSDs).• To develop novel compact and wideband antennas for slave WSDs.
